North American XB-70 Valkyrie(Aircraft Move Oct 6, 2020)

  • The North American XB-70 Valkyrie was pushed outside for a day as part of a gallery redesign in the museum's fourth building.
The futuristic XB-70A was originally conceived in the 1950s as a high-altitude, nuclear strike bomber that could fly at Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) -- any potential enemy would have been unable to defend against such a bomber.
By the early 1960s, however, new Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) threatened the survivability of high-speed, high-altitude bombers. Less costly, nuclear-armed ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) were also entering service. As a result, in 1961, the expensive B-70 bomber program was canceled before any Valkyries had been completed or flown.
Even so, the USAF bought two XB-70As to test aerodynamics, propulsion and other characteristics of large supersonic aircraft. The first XB-70A, on display here, flew in September 1964, and it achieved Mach 3 flight in October 1965. The second Valkyrie first flew in July 1965, but in June 1966, it was destroyed following an accidental mid-air collision. The third Valkyrie was not completed.
The first XB-70A airplane continued to fly and generate valuable test data in the research program until it came to the museum in 1969.

This aircraft still looks futuristic after 50 plus years of existence. Looks more like a space ship you would see zooming through the galaxy. Marvel of engineering and ahead of it's time in many ways.

I remember as a kid, seeing this majestic beautiful aircraft sitting outside next to the only one building that was there at the time . Remember eating at the cafeteria upstairs in that building. It was like a ritual when my uncle would come in town to go to the museum and eat upstairs. He was in the eighth army air corps as a mechanic .I have been there many times over the years each time seems they have something new you haven't seen before.
Tell the volunteers thank you for their good work, which makes this museum the best one around.

2nd only to the SR-71 Blackbird, in its time, this was by far the most extreme example of aeronautical engineering ever created, by anyone anywhere.

Thankfully, NMUSAF is keeping this valuable artifact inside out of the elements, unlike the years it was stored outside and deteriorated. I am sure the museum had to do a lot of restoration before bringing it inside once there was space available for it.

My Dad brought me here many years ago, and I feel in love with this museum, he and I are both retired Air Force. We both have had a love for aircraft. Dad only lived 35 miles from the museum. My grandfather was one of the instrumentation designers & engineers on the XB-70 project (and many others). My uncle & his son has been to the museum to visit her (the Valkyrie).
One of the museum docents asked my uncle why he was crying, he explained the story of his father and relationship with her, North American, and Edwards AFB. Much of the family still lives in the AV and works in the industry.
A visit to the museum with my sons to see her is on my bucket list.

Sorry that just sounded good. Amazing tour they have there. This plane and the B-58 Hustler are my all time favorites. It is truly a sight to see in person.

Despite being almost 60 years old this aircraft looks as if its just rolled of the production line, and the design wouldn't look out of place next to the current generation. The detailing required to keep such a legendary aircraft in pristine condition is mindblowing and testament to the teams who preserve these historic aircraft for future generations. (The NLG bay is cleaner than many restaurants I've eaten in...) Hopefully one day I'll get the opportunity to see this magnificent beast in the flesh.

I remember it was so big I had to keep it from snapping in the middle.. in my mind probably the most impressive military plane ever made.

That's what the sovereign nation of the United States used to build, before the international bankers put their bets on the profit potential of third-world labor. We used to have an inrernal economy, mostly self-sufficient. Then the international bankers sold us on "globalism", said it would be good for us. Now after NAFTA, GATT, and ascribing China "Most Favored Nation" trade status, reducing tariffs to zero, and helping that prison labor state join the WTO, we now have tens of millions unemployed, hundreds of thousands of closed US factories, a drastically shrinking middle class and our country's economy has been passed up by China. None of this was necessary. We didn't need them at all.
Now Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase have branches in China, doing business with the CCP, hiring the useless kids of the 300 CCP families at huge salaries in the "Sons and Daughters" campaigns, which is basically just bribes to the CCP to let western banks make inroads into the hugely profitable prison labor state that is China today. There's lots of profits to be made off cheap labor, and the international bankers wanted to dip their cups into this river of money. They sold out the American people for money. They do not care about the USA per se, they just care about their own empires. Thats why the USA did not continue to develop the Valkyrie, because the soveriegn, strong nation of the United States wasn't the best profit-making model in their new world order.

(random comment) that's very likely a Ford 300 inline six moving that plane out.

Now's the time to give these a quick wash. To bad we need wars to create such aircraft. I'm antiwar but this is a beautiful plane. I wonder if the systems all still work on it.

Af24us - it’s in a great museum of AF planes in Ohio!
Great place to visit if you can,
or if you’re even just going past the state, it’s more than worth it making a detour to visit!

@af24us - when we moved to Ohio it used to be in a hangar within the secure perimeter of the base. You had to make reservations ahead of time and, if I recall correctly, you had to be a US citizen to take the bus over. That hangar also had one or more presidential planes as well. Not too many years ago... 5? 6? a new wing to the museum was built making it accessible to all visitors.
