- 2020 Olympic medalist, Bella Sims, experienced something all swimmers do, a challenging meet. Hers was, of course, a consequential one--the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. Many fans expected a strong performance in Indy after Sims' lights-out NCAA Championships this past spring. Spoiler alert! Sims was not sick and did not miss her taper at Olympic Trials. From her perspective, and her Sandpipers' club coach, Ron Aitken, the reason was very specific. Sims unpacks it all in this podcast, talks about her competition ahead at this week's SPEEDO SUMMER NATIONALS, and she charts her future.
Many thanks to 12-year partner Speedo USA for making this podcast happen!

Very moving interview. I thought she might breakdown at any minute. I hope she comes back stronger than ever.
What a happy kid! Love watching this vlog. I almost got the feeling that Mel was shocked she was doing so well, but shocked in a good way. So he didn't have to do a lot of cheering her up, actually none at all. She's doing great and a very happy, cheerful person.
...(this is mel). I think she's putting on a good face. This is a challenging moment in her career. I'm just glad she's examining it and working through it.
@@SwimSwamTV Wow, thanks Mel for the reply. I think you did a great job on the interview. This way she knows she has a friend in you and good supporters at Swim Swam. I liked the way you mentioned a couple of times you guys at Swim Swam think so much of her that you put her on the cover. Nice.
Thanks, Mel, for this vlog. It relates to so many of us in our swimming experiences. This was a tricky interview to navigate & u did a great job.
....thanks... We're glad she did the interview. She's a pro, and that shows....
That’s smile is helping everyone ❤
we won't see her in paris but she'll be back stronger than ever. go gators!
...we expect strong sophomore year ahead. She swam fast this past spring....
Tough topic, brilliant frank and honest Bella!!! You have got your head around this, all the best!!!
2:54 I disagree. She was nearly four seconds off her best in the 500 free which was the most important indicator for success in long course later in the season.
Shouldn't the coaches at so called "University of Freestyle" have noticed the problem and helped her correct it?
....That's a fair question, one U of F will manage. They have the talent on deck to make this work.
Love Bella! She has such a bright future!
Not every coach or training program is right for every athlete and that is hard to navigate. However, the big question is: will she be entering the transport portal? And If she isnt, this interview will be a hard one to explain to UF staff.
I like Bella a lot. But the lack of success is not because of a stroke issue. In general trying to understand why an athlete doesn’t perform well is a very hard thing because it could be so many things. I hope she will be honest with herself of the reason and try to improve it
i love bella no matter if she makes it or not ❤❤
Bella you are simply a Star, sometimes the Stars dont align, But MY Goodness, keep that smile and all the work is in the bank = it will pay off. Stay Proud, Stay HAPPY.
Looking back at this interview and how the American men are doing in Paris under Nesty, I will say there needs to be some changes Redeem Team-style for USA Swimming. Whatever was not working for Bella was also not working at the Olympics. Not saying Nesty is a bad coach, but it seemed like there's something off in the management of swimmers and their strengths. Maybe that's more of an issue with USA Swimming management and Nesty's coaching was simply not enough to overcome it.
Men’s team was a failure except for Bobby Finke. And yes I know they won the 400 free relay but all 4 swimmers were disastrous in their individual events. No individual medals for them and Dressel, Armstrong and Giuliano even failed to make the finals.
Congratulations All 🙏🇱🇰
Good luck All 💙💛🧡⚓
My Hero All 🥇🌟🏆
Love u, Bella…looking forward to see u in your top form🎉💕
Many more chapters to write. Keep tinkering. Keep questioning. I'll keep cheering.
Get given the wrong advice from a Coach, it seems, about techniques. I am a 25 yr coach of Olympic level athletes/ swimmers.
😴 what a boring interview
