To make it easier, go to grid then snap to grid to make it easier for you. For the brick section, I would've done extrude and bevel, have the shape face forward and put a material resembling those black bricks.

Thank you, I try to keep the basics really simple, this is the students first assignment where they get to use and experiment with Illustrator. If I use to many techniques, they will get confused. So this is an easy way for them to just use shapes, outlines, and a couple shortcuts and then get creative.
