Awesome! I am recently saved and baptized. I have a NIV Bible but really want to upgrade to a good study bible and like the ESV translation. I have been debating between the John Macarthur or ESV study Bible. Would you recommend one over the other for someone new to the faith?

I have this is the calfskin leather. I will never need another Bible for the rest of my life. Love this Bible so much! The extra material is so thorough and exhaustive. I like how it has a section on other religions and cults to give an understanding what we as Christians face when trying to witness.

The number of contributors and editors gives me pause because how do those of different views reduce their takes to the lowest common denominator? The meaning of the Word gets diluted because verses need to be boiled down to be acceptable to the commentators.

I entirely agree with you! The ESVSB is (I think) my favorite study Bible too, and I own a bunch of study Bibles. We're blessed to have many good study Bibles in the English speaking world, but I think the ESVSB is a cut above the rest. Other study Bibles I like: the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible (which takes us through the main storyline(s) of the Bible), the CSB Study Bible, and the CSB Holy Land Illustrated Bible (which isn't a study Bible per se but I'll include it since it's so good).

They do have Large Print which is Text Size: 10 Point, Note Size: 8.5 Point. I think any bigger than that would be TOO huge/heavy. I actually ended up donating my beloved one because of it. I realized I was not reading it as often as I had wanted. For various reasons, including my increasingly bad eyesight, scratched/old glasses that need to be replaced (can't afford it), and lack of a proper reading chair, the only place I could read it was at the kitchen table. It was really hard to put on my lap without risking pages bent/torn, etc. But that really was my only issue! Hopefully it got to a person who will love it and make good use of it.

The ESV isn't too bad. It's better than probably most other versions.
Yet what I'm convinced is the best, is this one:
Do you believe God lead us to be tempted or does satan lead us to be tempted? James 1:13 says, "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man." But in Luke 11:4, the ESV says, "And lead us not into temptation." But the Inspired Version says, "And let us not be led unto temptation."
So, who leads us into temptation? ESV: God. IV: someone other than God.
Do you believe someone who humbles himself after committing sin, should not be forgiven? Isaiah 2:9 says in the ESV, "So man is humbled, and each one is brought low- do not forgive them!" But the Inspired Version says, "And the mean man boweth not down, and the great man humbleth himself not; therefore forgive them not."
Can you be sanctified without the doctrine of Christ?
Hebrews 6:1 of the ESV says, "Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity." But the Inspired Version says, "Therefore not leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection."
So, should we just abandon the doctrine of Christ? ESV: yes, it's not important. IV: no, it is important or else Christ never would have taught it.

@@Yesica1993 I think this person is refering to the fact that many verses and passages that are in the KJV will not be found in the ESV. I observed another conversation about something similar under another comment.
There is a long winded explanation as to why this is so, but I'll try summarising as best I can.
KJV uses manuscripts knows as the Textus Receptus (or received text), which are among the oldest known manuscripts (this means we've had them the longest). In actual age, however, they are among the latest. Since our discovery and use of the Textus Receptus, there have been more manuscript discoveries, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are older than the previously known manuscripts.
What was discovered is that plenty of passages and verses that are found in the KJV and other older translations were not found in the older manuscripts, even though these manuscripts had these books. In fact, plenty popular verses and passages of scripture (and example being the woman caught in the act of adultery, new testament) were only found in a few (like 5 out of 500) manuscripts and all these happen to be the newer manuscripts. Therefore, many modern translations have omitted them, adding notes and comments of their existence instead. The NKJV takes a different approach where it actually includes all these verses and passages from the KJV, but inserts footnotes that explain how the older manuscripts do not include these verses.
I hope I was able to shed some light on this matter and that I haven't taken up too much of our time explaining all this.
God bless you all. Have a wonderful day. Peace.
