In this Student Spotlight lesson, I will help Vijay overcome some of his difficulties with economy picking.
Economy picking can be looked at as a combination of alternate picking and sweep picking. The two very different feels those techniques have can make economy picking feel very awkward.
In this lesson I will demonstrate to Vijay some ways of approaching economy picking that will make it much easier. The most important concept here is the use of the thumb and pick in the picking motion. That will of course require Vijay to hold the pick in a more traditional way (using his index finger and thumb), so that he can have more control over the picking.
Then, when crossing strings, he can use a very small circular motion of the pick created with the index finger and thumb to help facilitatate the string crossing. You will see that this is usually a major component of great economy picker's playing. They seem to do most of the picking motion from the thumb and index finger when doing the small sweep across strings instead of the wrist or forearm.
A lot of these players did it intuitively by paying close attention to what the pick felt like while crossing strings. However, after you are aware of the technique, hopefully you will be able to incorporate it to help your own playing as well.

The economy picking course in your Academy is freaking brilliant. I'm only 20% into it and my picking hand already cuts through the strings like a hot knife through butter.

I haven't got to tackle the economy picking course yet in the Academy. I'm working through the alternate picking course right now which is a huge course. These couple of tips will help me when it's time to try the course. Thanks!

Hey Carl Thank you for all the lessons that made me a better guitar player, 2 years ago when I started I couldn't even play the intro to nothing else matters and now I'm playing disposable heroes solo like nothing all thanks to your lessons. I also sent a request for the student spotlight regarding Marty Friedman's vibrato technique. If you can make a video about that it would be much appreciated. Keep making videos!

Hey Carl! I was wondering if you could help explain how to change elbow position while going across strings as when I try to adjust it’s hard to slide my arm up on the body of the guitar

Carl, suggest some good(best) classical guitar for buying. (Which can be used for pro..kind of long time). I still have acoustic but I need a classical one.
    Thank you!

I am a beginner..somehow I just cannot alternate pick my brain always takes the shortcut especially when changing the strings...i am really hoping that I will not have problems once I cross 100bpm

Hey man! I had that issue too with sweep picking where I wasn't able to pass a certain bpm. The reason being is because I played 2 notes per intervaled tick in the metronome which made the song feel impossible to surpass faster. What I did though is take for example 3 notes per interval and that meant I could slow down the bpm and play more notes in the tick spaces. It's also just practice and sometimes think of alternate picking as tremelo between strings :)

What I think picking is also a feel thing. Someone's technique not always helps but it is a great starting point. Carl is a very good teacher. I have learnt several techniques just from watching his videos. Thank you Carl for bringing some awesome videos. Love your videos man. Keep it up.

Why not just practice 3 notes per string scales? Or just 3 notes non-scale per string, skipping etc? Why over complicate it? I say however you play is ok.It makes you unique.Ask Jeff Healy or Stanley Jordan for 2 quick examples.Practicing will make you good at whatever unique way you do play and in the long run you will find you can do things noone else can...instead of sounding like you just got off the guitar playing assembly line.
