One of the greatest moments in human history. Yes, he was a terrorist, but when the regime is repressive, violent resistance is the only remaining option until an icon to fascinate both partiea appear.

The National Party d*mn well knew that the chaos would only end along with Apartheid, and yet they still held out for years with practically no concessions while both blacks *and* whites suffered as the country descended into borderline anarchy. It probably was initially, but by the later years of their regime before De Klerk took office, Apartheid was no longer really even about preserving the dominance of ordinary whites in South Africa. It was about preserving the dominance of the National Party in South Africa. Why else under Botha strip even white citizens of virtually all their rights. The ANC might be corrupt af nowadays, but they never resort to political repression to get what they want. In my opinion, the National Party holds just as much responsibility for the violence of the final years of Apartheid as the ANC, and I can understand the extreme approach the latter took later on, especially since they had already tried the nonviolent resistance method for decades beforehand to virtually no effect.

I remember being very young and reading a newspaper saying he died in prison, I remember thinking how sad that was, then I also remember my mom telling me years later that Mandela was released from prison and I remember being surprised and saying to her "oh I thought he was dead" I don't fall for this Mandela effect stuff but this IS a memory I clearly have and that's amazing because THAT is why they call it the Mandela Effect. Someone here in comments said it was a hoax but I've. Been looking for that and I can't find it.

Yeah I remember reading about his death when I was in 7th grade, I first heard of mandela after watching rush hour 2 in 2001. I ask my teacher who was he and I told her I heard his name in a movie she told me go get a book from the library and I went during 6 period and got a book, it wasn't English alive but one just as informative, and it said July 1991 he died after his release but he was killed by apartheid police, the apartheid government collapsed I think it said 6 months later, due to civil unrest and some whites switching sides in defence of black people's rights. They elected a guy I don't remember his name but he was president till 2000, I really feel I'm in another world, someone holla back!
