- WHITBY | Full tour of Whitby England from town centre to 199 Steps and Whitby Abbey
A walk through beautiful Whitby to take in the sights and sounds!

When we did our last video of Whitby Yorkshire, we started at the captain cook statue and whalebone arch and wandered up to the Abbey. This time we start at the other side of Whitby Town Centre and walk through the streets and along the harbour, past the shops, pubs, bars and restaurants and up to the infamous 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey!
The town of Whitby in North Yorkshire is a traditional seaside holiday destination with picturesque views, a beautiful harbour, a beach, a pier, two lighthouses, as well as boat trips, shops, bars, pubs and restaurants. What more could you want!
Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was the author Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”.
Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by the famous 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts.
Famous for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Whitby has always embraced its association with Gothic culture which is reflected in the town’s quirky streets, shops and Abbey ruins, and of course the annual celebration of the culture - The Whitby Goth Weekend.
When you visit you can explore ornate cobbled paths, locally-owned shops and quirky cafes that give Whitby it's intriguing yet welcoming atmosphere, making it a great place to visit. Being by the sea you’ll also get to enjoy classic seaside fun and food with locally caught crab & lobster as well as sandcastle building and walks along the pier!
Whitby is also a place for explorers, with connection to the famous voyager Captain James Cook. The great man is immortalised in a monument up on West Cliff, where he can be seen looking out to his favourite place - the sea. You can also learn more about his life and journeys in Whitby at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
How to get to Whitby
Whitby is accessible via train, bus and car however during your visit you will encounter a hill or two and not to mention the 199 steps that lead up towards St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey - so just make sure you wear comfy shoes.
Whitby is situated on the Yorkshire Coast. To the south lies the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. All these are well within a short drive. The nearest city inland is York.
I hope you enjoy this guide to Whitby and this wander through the historic traditional seaside streets.

I love your videos of Whitby. I feel like I'm there. I can almost smell the sea air and the delicious fish and chips. Thank you.
Thank you!
I love Whitby so it’s a pleasure to film there
Fish and chips is more Grimsby and Cleethorpes. Whitby scampi has the edge. But Grimsby fish is unbeatable.
Brilliant, absolutely cannot wait to go again. Thanks for the wonderful tour.
Our pleasure!
I really enjoyed your video, and good choice of music.
Thank you very much!
Such a beautiful place can’t go to Whitby without going up the 199 steps well done 👍 need a visit back there .
You should!
Loved this video,Your filming always has such a clear picture,It's a pleasure to watch.Music was perfect
Thank you so much!
I love this one! Great music choices too! ❤
Quaint fishing village laid back i love it

Absolutely fantastic, brilliant footage. Thank you very much for sharing.. love the Scarborough tour you did. Cheers Terry.
Thank you so much Terry that really means a lot to me 👍👍👍
I felt your pain climbing those steps I have done it a few times ..lovely video ,Whitby is just gorgeous 😍
We always come to Whitby every year so we are hippy to see your super video especially as we've miss ed out recently because of the Covid
Love your videos. I always learn something, as well as keeping fit, as I stride along in front of the telly with you!
Love that! Thank you!
I just found your videos and I am really enjoying the walks hope you will do more we have not come to this place we love it down Devon we have not been on holidays down there for quite a long time so enjoying theses videos thank you
There's those uplifting tunes I love on the walk! Keep on keepin on!😁
Thank you so much!
Lovely place, again visited a lot, I am a proud Yorkshire Lad after all.
I have climbed the 199 steps in my youth before old age and several car accidents, I was a passenger, took their toll, by the way the CL thingy in the step are the Roman counting system for 150 etc telling you how many step you have climbed as posted below.
Not sure where it is but my middle son brought us some smoked kippers from a shop around where you walked, very tasty, we didn’t even warm them up but just ate them as is.
Again the last visit was just before lock down thanks to our English Heritage membership.
Hello there! I cannot wait!👍👍

Love Whitby.... Its only an hours drive from our home town and hour and half to Scarborough 😁❤️
Perfect - wish it was for me - I have to drive lot longer to go there!
Another fantastic video of Full tour of Whitby, North Yorkshire from Town and Harbour to 199 Steps and Whitby Abbey went for a day with my brothers!.💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Great stuff!
Bet that was fun!
Hi again as you walk up the road the smell should tell you if it still open you could buy oak smoked fish from them. Also as you turned right to cross the bridge if you look left to the right of Papas is a narrow road which takes you up, sorry a step hill with shops on each side. At the top is Whitby museum on the left, however if you turn right before then another road of shops including Botham's locally famous for cakes, pastries & pasties (Doh)
Other places to visit locally with a small footprint and no steep hills, Pickering, Driffield, Malton.
might go next month looks a pretty place
Oh it definitely is!
Absolutely love Whitby, it's where my heart is. Even got married there.
Just a thought, you should show planner park.👍👍
I meant pannet park.
Ooooh where's that? is that in Whitby too?
@@GimbalWalkTV yes. Come in on the road from hawsker and it is on the left on bagdale road as you go towards the harbour. Whitby museum is also in the grounds of the park.
wonderful videos..Can you please do a video of Whitby residential area or areas around, away from the seafront and harbour.. I would really love to see how it looks.. Thank you
Great suggestion!
Hi enjoyed the vid. You take me around places I have been in the past but cannot visit now (knees). However at the bottom of the steps you looked left, if you had gone up that narrow road at the top used to be one of the few traditional 'smoke houses' for smoking fish. You used to be able to buy oak smoked kippers from them.
Ooooh didn't know that!
Right - I'm definitely going to go and film down there as I'm guilty so far of never venturing down there yet!
Thanks for the info - very much appreciated!
Love this video, watched a few times already, but what is the soundtrack please? It's great.❤😊
Excellent video , just found you . Have you done a Brighton walk? My daughter wants to visit there and asked . 😀
@@GimbalWalkTV 🤣🤣🤣 that’s the great British weather for you . Look forward to seeing it when you get chance .
The steps up to the Abbey - CL was step number 150 and CLX was 160. They were roman numerals and, when I left skool in 1968 and went to work for Kennings in stock control, all our prices were marked in roman numerals (eg £1 15s 6d per C {100}). That's showing my age! 🙄
Thank you!!
You’ve solved a mystery for me there!
I had no idea what they meant Keith!

One off my fav places to go for peace is lindisfarne(holy island) stunning but not so if u get caught out on the causeway also get some stunning mead
Ah nice! I should have a look at that!
thanks - have you thought of doing a walk round newquay cornwall?
I have Charles, but never been in the area when the weather has been kind enough (yet!)
Try the Moon and Sixpence for a meal, the seafood platter is unbelievable
Oooh good call Paul - not tried that yet but sounds right up my street!
Another great video. I love the music, who is it singing?
Music here Pauline - open.spotify.com/playlist/2HAjca8vd1gyTkJF2nuaWa?si=934ab391ac8c4a63
You could do Brighton sea front gimble walk TV
Definitely Andrew - it's on my list
💙
👍
A great walk around Whitby but would have been much more enjoyable hearing the natural sounds instead of music, the natural audio is important as it adds emotion.
I do that too - but get way less views and people watch for about a minute on the natural sounds ones rather than 15 minute average if there's music on them 👍
You are an evil man. Once again you pass some of hubby's favourite shops. Fresh seafood & so many different cordial flavours. Just cruel. For me it was the shop with chocolate & fudge. Beautiful views. Well worth the steps & you did well carrying all your camera gear & backpack. I could climb up, but climbing down would take me a long time.
It's a real mission climbing those steps Iris!
Got some lovely whitby videos coming up too!
Just found your channel. Is there any way of turning off the music and the captions? My mum is in a nursing home and unable to go on holiday. I'd like to take her for a quiet 'walk' by the sea with natural sounds, but this video isn't it.
Sorry Kathy - that's not what I do. My channel has music and captions 👍
Hello Gimbal
They are Roman numerals
M=1000
C=100
L=50
X=10
V=5
1=1
So CLX WOULD BE 160
Anyway lovely video ,yes,I've done the steps a few times,not easy on a hot day,so well done
Ah thank you!!
Those steps are a killer eh!
Let me know where else you would like to see me film..
You could film Brighton
Grassington, Burnsall, Ilkley 👍
Knaresborough and Harrogate 👍
Southport
thats one way to catch crabs lol haha
🤣
Great to see whitby but would be so much better without putting the words of the music, over the itinerary but still loved it
Thanks Jean!
why did no one join the live chat, it was only myself and you as well 😘

Oh it’s got music all the way throughout did not watch apart from start middle and end. ❌
Why are you telling me this??
J
Music is horrendous, i cant watch sorry.
Your comment is horrendous, I can't read sorry.
Whitby is far to expensive to park after all you are a tourist town you need to let you lively hood to park for free or £1.00 per day I would rather go to South sheilds or bambourgh Castle it a lot cheaper there in fact castle is FREE
It’s always packed in Whitby though Mark!
Why the crap music !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY THE CRAP COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@GimbalWalkTV well said gimbai tipical moaning tourists i loved your video double awesome and great music
