  • Every time we'd visit a farm supply store, I would see these automatic pig feeders. I couldn't ever bring myself to pay for one so I built one. I kind of just guessed on the overall dimensions so time will tell how well it will fit a pig.

    That was great, Jonah! I really enjoyed seeing the process of building the box. I'd like to make some nice "furniture" like that for our animals, too. Inspiring! (Honestly, I can build a house, but for some reason stuff like this doesn't come naturally to me).

    I am hoping to build this for ducks. I have nearly 50 of them and they are messy. I think they are part pig!! I found you through wholesome roots and subbed to you! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Nice. It works well now, but in a few months it may not hold up. You'll want to anchor it down at least. When they get bigger they'll probably demo it. Pigs are powerful and don't mind wrecking whatever gets in their way. Also, having that hot wire that low may lead to entanglements and bad accidents. If you're going to try a hot wire, make sure your energizer is super hot for young pigs. Train 'em to it young. Also, they'll probably tear down those step-in poles and repeatedly ground out your system. I'd find some insulators that will work on your hog panels, or wire the poles directly to the panels. Nice feeder, but it'll probably only work for younger pigs.
    I've had some experience.. LOL.. Never tried the hot wire though.

      Thank you we are just using the wire to train while inside the panels so when they go to pasture they will be used to it! That way if they get through it inside the pen they have nowhere to go! Lol at the moment the battery is charging and it's not properly set up! We need to get out and fix it now that the battery is charged! We had 2 pigs last year and yes they are crazy destroyers!! We will just see how it goes! If this snow will ever melt we will have them pastured!! Appreciate the info

      What do you use to prevent them from demo'ing their feeders? I had a metal one that they kept ripping the lids off of. I would reweld it add more metal and they would rip it apart in other places. Mine was secured to 2 2x8s bolted to 2 trees.

    i made a similar thing for the chickens egg box and used a piano hinge. I think it's cheaper and runs all the way across. You can also cut them in half.

    you did a great job on it. seen another similar but instead of lids there was a cantilever style roof that overhung the feeding area & protected it from rain I believe jus cause the guy didn't vwanna buy hinges 😁

    I would put it up on rot resistant skids and paint it especially the end grain do You have a table saw or router table then you cut some rabet molding out of 2x stock to use as corner boards to cover the end grain

      Thank you for the tips! We did make a cover for the grain just didn't get it put on. We used it for one round of pigs and will be making upgrades!

    I hope you picked up those plastic step in posts as they were down and your elec fence was grounding out...

    • @WillowCreekHomestead
      @WillowCreekHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha well... sort of! Jonah wanted to do an update video on it and it just hasn't happened! had we used screws to hold it together it would have been better! and the lids needed a better system... SO has it held up ... NO... but it could have! LOL

    Does anyone find their pigs overeat with an automatic feeder or do they ration themselves

    • @WillowCreekHomestead
      @WillowCreekHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From our research they won't overeat like most think they will. They only eat what they need
