  • A 1969 Harmony H168 that I converted to X-bracing. Sound clips before and after conversion.
Same strings, same sound settings and recorded in the same environment.

Hey, I’m so glad you’re digging it! I really liked that one, I love the mustache bridge on those! And the Birch back and sides has a lot of punch, reminds me of the sound of Maple!

i must say, the boxiness/blues bark of the ladder bracing is really neat sounding and it's own sorta vintagey..........however, i really love the x-conversion tonality/resonance. also, you honestly appear/sound more inspired in your playing, attack, smoothness after x-bracing .. . stellar work, brian!

I agree, the ladder braced tone has its own appeal. I have an old Recording King (made in Kalamazoo by Gibson in 1938), that I’d never convert. It’s got that quintessential Blues Bark, but these old 000 sized Harmonys really take well to the conversion, IMO. As for my playing, having the neck reset made a big difference in the smoothness of my play, lol.
      Thanks!

This is awesome. Really appreciate the workmanship and playing. Sounds fantastic. Have you posted it yet? So this is like a Baxendale conversion. So worth it.

I just finished this one up, and I like to play them for a little bit before I list, mostly to make sure everything is settled, but also just to enjoy my work for a bit! Keep an eye on my Reverb page, or jump on there and send me a message, I can let you know when it’s up.
As for it being like a "Baxendale", I won’t claim to have his experience or time doing these, but I’ve done quite a few now (something like 40-50 in the last few years) and I’ve got my system down pretty good. Thanks for looking, and feel free to reach out on my Reverb or Facebook site. "Brian's Guitar Rehab and Customs"
      Thanks!

Awesome job! Your videos inspired me to x brace an old beat up 1260 that was my dads. It sounds awesome! My favorite guitar to play now. Im contemplating v bracing a 162 for the next project. Are you rebracing the backs when you do them like a martin or just removing one of the 5 braces? Thanks for sharing your work!

I rebrace the backs. Remove all the old ones and replace with new Sitka braces, 4 instead of 5. I’m working on a 1260 right now too, great guitars!

@@brianmcfarland4745 awesome! They really are great guitars. I counted over 250 growth rings on the top of the 1260 i did..some old wood you just can't find anywhere now. The tree was probably growing in the 1600s..crazyy.
