    Definitely the better of the two “Environmentalist Message” episodes. In Orphan 55 the fact that climate change was even the cause of the end of the world felt so incidental. Here it feels like they just had a genuinely clever idea and folded the pollution element into it.
    That said, anyone else think “I thought I discovered an alien world all on my own” was an interesting bit? Yaz, as she often does, really takes after the Doctor this episode, and it’s interesting hearing a bit of resentment in her voice when the wind gets taken out of her sails.

      Not to mention we ruined the planet which made a mutant species, it was their world now in orphan55 and then the humans were trying to terraform it basically ruining the dregs home world to try and revive what the humans already ruined in the first place. and the doctor gave 0 Fs about the dreg and earth now being their home, humans lost their chance. instead hey audience yall better go buy teslas

      I much preferred Orphan-55. The pace was faster, I cared about the one-off characters more and it had a cool monster. That felt more like Doctor Who than this did. Yes, Orphan-55 was preachy but so was this. They just moved the preachy section from the end of the episode to the middle.

    • @alephnulI

      I thought that scene for Yaz was interesting too!
      I feel like the companions are being set up for a Doctor-lite episode where they'll have to save her this series (or the next, but it feels like their character arcs is starting to wrap up, what with Ryan's and Yaz' growing confidence and Graham's growing peace, so I don't think they'll remain as companions for long).

      Also, Microplastics are in our food, so it isn't only about the environment. No telling what they are doing to our bodies.
      I think Yaz is getting a bit reckless. I hope they are leaning more into that initial impression we got of her, that she felt like she had a lot of potential, but was getting ahead of herself and her training.

    One thing that keeps happening at the moment is Who is there's just too many characters. The girl whose friend died served no narrative purpose and also didn't seem that bothered that she watched her friend die. She would be traumatised. The guy who got swarmed by birds on the beach - we could have lost him. I liked the astronaut and his husband storyline, but I feel we only scratched the surface of their relationship because so much time was dedicated to all the other characters.

    • @daffy8995
      @daffy8995 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I initially thought those two were brothers, as they looked sort of similar, and I kind of liked the notion that they had a sibling rivalry and were being brought back together, so I was a bit disappointed to find out they were actually married. It did bother me that one girl seemed perfectly fine with her friend dying.

    I think this episode handled the environmental message a lot better than Orphan 55 did. But I will say, I agree with you about the vlogger girl. I don’t think she was necessary. This was a good episode. Obviously not as crazy as the last ones but still significant enough to have a good world scale focus. The environmental message was much better utilised here and I liked most of the side characters and the companions were more proactive this time which was good. Aside from the vlogger girl, things felt way more natural in this episode than they did with Orphan 55 which I thought was awful. It’s the only episode of S12 that I really hate. IMO This episode had a much better take on the subject matter. Much more enjoyable.

    • @alephnulI

      I liked the vlogger girl. She felt natural to me. I dunno if it's a cultural thing, because she comes from the country I live in.
      Arguing the necessity of characters is pointless because there's always a way most characters can be written off, but I'm happy she was added in.

      @@daffy8995 You mean because of her reaction at her friend's death?
      It feels to me like death is just normalized where she came from. Which is an unfortunate reality in parts of my country. That would mean she could be hardened enough to put up with it until she found herself a safe place to break down and deal with it. You sort of see a glimpse of that in the TARDIS, and later she tells Yaz that she wants to fight things.

    • @alephnulI
      @alephnulI 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daffy8995 yes, I'm sure it did.
      No matter your coping mechanisms, there are always things that push every person too far. For most people, watching someone die would easily pass that threshold, and I understand that. But there are people who live here who have been so desensitised to death that they'd be able to endure it in the way she did. Like the Doctor often does.
      My grandmother lived in a very dangerous neighbourhood, for example, and I've been desensitised to gunpoint mugging. It happened to me twice and I was fine minutes later, I didn't lose sleep over it. I had a school colleague who suffered the same once and got terrified of leaving her house for weeks, and needed counselling to recover.
      I'd probably have Gabriella's level of reaction if someone I cared about died in front of me, tbh. You can't just lower your guard in a dangerous situation, and grieving leaves you extremely vulnerable.

    Also, I've seen some people call this episode preachy. I'm sorry, but if they say this is preachy then the truth is they are just completely against any sort of message in shows regardless of how subtle they are.

    I thought 'Praxeus' was a pretty good standalone story that handles its message a hell of a lot better than 'Orphan 55' did. In a way, this series is sort of reminding me of Series 6 and this felt like the 'Night Terrors' coming after last week's 'A Good Man Goes to War' or 'Let's Kill Hitler', even though this was way better than 'Night Terrors'. I don't listen to the audio stories all that much because of how expensive they are, but it would have been amazing to see them included (loosely) into the canon of the show. That would give us incentive! Regardless though, his character was very endearing and his performance as good as ever.

    Microplastics are a huge problem and just one of the factors involved with humanity's impact on our planet. I studied the basics of it in college and the info given in this episode is spot on (if generalized for the sake of a tv audience). Do a quick Google Scholar search and you'll find dozens of pretty scary scientific articles about it.
    I also loved the whole "ethics of medical testing" theme in this episode. Humanity's early medical history is full of scientists who tested their cures/vaccines on "volunteers" with no real idea of what the effects would be. Thing is, most of those "volunteers" were just people who couldn't say no - prisoners, orphans, slaves, the very poor, and the very desperate (Example: Edward Jenner, the guy who discovered how to vaccinate against smallpox, tested the first vaccination on an 8-year old boy). That's part of why medical testing is so strictly regulated today. Between the Doctor initially not wanting to test the cure on Adam because it was dangerous and the aliens making the entirety of Earth an unwilling test case, I thought there was some really interesting subtext in this episode about what it means to give medical consent.
    As you can tell I'm a super-nerd and this episode touched on topics I'm super interested in, so I loved it!

    I mean, if it was a possible asteroid strike, nobody would be concerned about the message... having said that, I think there were problems. Sometimes the ability to show locations and effects and scale (not that kind) distracts from the occasional lack of detail. What of the contagion risk? Why have people died without bigger reactions? You know? I have questions. But it barrelled along in places and was certainly pleasant to watch.

  • @ojwh1933
    @ojwh1933 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that it has a similar problem to 'Orphan 55'.
    It's not just the number of side characters in both cases but the fact that they're unrelated, meaning you have to set up several premises and try and juggle them all to consistent pay-offs.
    'Orphan 55' had 3 main pairs (the elderly couple, the mother and daughter, and the father and son) and basically tried to tell the stories in that order, spending a third of the runtime on each, before "killing them off" as not to have to deal with them further. And that's along with Ryan's relationship with the daughter, the threat of the episode, and the concept of the dystopian Earth/humans.
    This episode had the travel vloggers, the couple, and Suki and her friend - so a similar situation of 3 main sets of unrelated character stories to deal with, and the only one that pushed through to some extent was the couple. If a writer wants that many side characters in an episode, that's fine, but they need to be more closely related if the writer wants to have time to develop them (and the main cast who've still been given very little this series) sufficiently.
    This is my least favourite episode of Chibnall's era as I lacked any investment throughout (and that's coming from quite an ecologically aware, frequent activist).
    As far as I've seen, the general consensus on this one seems to be quite positive though.
    Also, I had a similar reaction to you at 8:26 when I saw 1:21 - "And the lecture of this week is..."

    Delete Orphan 55 and insert this as Ep 3. That would have been better. Those two episodes had the same overall message and this is the better of the two.
    Because of Orphan 55 this episode will get more hate than it should. Two episodes out of 10 and so close together with exactly the same message is one to many

    Blog girl was written poorly. I like the idea and some of the execution of this episode, but it is one of those topics that I've been concerned about for 28 years or so, and I would like to see it get a hell of a lot more attention than it does. With the way people act about it, though, I'm less optimistic for our future than what I read...

    Sadly after the incredible episode the week before... I felt this was a huge let down.... some criticise Orphan 55 but I really liked that one with a bizarre ending... this one however I felt was poorly paced....very monotonous and expositional and too any characters to focus on to fully get immersed in a story.... speaking of which the story itself i felt was lacking. Which is a shame ...I do hope series 12 gets back on track next week though.... this felt very series 11-ish.

    Can we invite this co-writer back on next series to be the script-doctor? Every character felt like a character in this one and the dialogue was solid, and yeah. Moffat would polish up all the scripts in his era, get this person on board in the future for that job. Ryan wasn’t infantalized, Yaz had motivations, the Doctor (oddly enough) finally felt like she was the Doctor to me in this one, the gay couple were naturalistic and didn’t get killed, big ups all across the board, this episode nailed it. If every episode was this level of quality, this show would be exactly what Chibnall said it was supposed to be during press interviews.

  • @bletheringfool

    I enjoyed it. Was glad to see Yas doing more and using her initiative. Fits her character. Ryan is really doing well with the laydees this series. Graham is very good at listening to people and giving sage advice. Warren Brown aka Jake and Bradley Walsh's performances when they were chatting very moving. I would love to see more of Adam and Jake. They could almost have their own spin-off. Jake could become a private eye investigating strange cases with his astronaut husband.

    I didn't expect Chibnall and Co. to follow up on what he set in motion last week (and I really don't figure they'll do something great with all that stuff at all, call me a pessimist) so my expectations were precisely neutral coming in. As a result, I had a great time with this. The globetrotting, sprawling story reminded me of the sort of thing that they would routinely do in the Seventh Doctor novels that came out while the show was off the air. They tended to be filled with secondary characters one really wished would get out of the way so we could see what the Doctor, Ace, Benny, Roz, and Chris were up to so that otherwise problematic feature gave me an entirely inappropriate warm nostalgic glow. As much as I hate to admit it, it does not take much for Chibnall to please me this season. Expectations successfully adjusted, I reckon.
    All the moaning about messages among internet people makes me wonder if they've ever seen any television of science fiction before. Like "Star Trek" never trotted out 'issue of the week' episodes. Even Tom Baker's Doctor had a go at fossil fuels a time or two back in the day. I guess we're pretending that none of that happened, or that it was absolutely perfectly executed and subtly insightful back then, eh? Giant green maggots anyone?

    The number of characters could be dealt with simply by staying with one story long enough to examine all sides of something. But I don't know if that's the environment (if you'll pardon the expression) we're in right now. Despite its best intentions, this season is working better when it sticks to the familiar problems in continuity or the 'in-universe' stuff of the Time Lords. It wasn't so noticeable last series because, of course, they weren't in it!

While I found this episode very dull and boring the plastic pollution is legit. But the whole plot? an alien came to earth to infect us to find a cure for humans which wouldnt work on her species because they arent human. GG. orphan55 is still worse but it started off ok i was down with the resort and the machines getting infected but the section they introduced the monster and left the base i was done. this episode i was just sleeping through

  • @1nelsondj

    I agree that the characters could have used more depth. The alien girl looked human, why not make her more alien? Did her race evolve just like ours by coincidence? I like the pairing of Graham with Yaz, I was thinking before this episode that we need to see that. The Doctor was good here, ideas flashing into her head (there was an off-hand remark about her having multiple brains?) and she was funny. For modern Who she's my 2nd favorite Doctor at the moment, right after David Tennant.
    While I don't mind message episodes I think 1 per season is good, this came pretty soon after the last one so I'm sure there will be people complaining about it being preachy.

    This season is being particularly preachy, more so than the previous one. In the historical ones, the Doctor takes a _long_ time spewing the backstory of the historical figures, like an encyclopedia. Compare the time and length of lines describing Tesla or Ada to the ones describing Agatha Christie or Madame du Pompadour, not to mention Van Gogh. It used to show more and explain less.
    And the ones covering current events and possible futures are suffering from the same issue. We didn't get so much of the Doctor explaining things in a rush in The Long Game or The Bells of Saint John, where he got equally annoyed at humans "you people/lot doing this or that are driving humanity towards its doom". But Jodie had to memorize paragraphs here and in Orphan 55; and the people felt more disposable than usual. I like the morals underneath them, but the delivery feels like a slap to the face. Sigh....

    • @arielsteinsaltz1956
      @arielsteinsaltz1956 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The show was originally a children's educational show, so I think it's nice they're going back to the roots of informing people about history and science. They need to work on the delivery a bit, especially that speech in Orphan 55, but that's only a minor thing for me rather than a huge turn-off. Climate change is really important, so whatever'll drive the point home...
      And people know who Agatha Christie and Van Gogh are; this season is doing a good job with showing lesser-known historical figures. I'm a math/computer science enthusiast so I knew about Ada Lovelace, but many don't, and I'd never heard of Noor Khan. And a lot of people only know about Tesla like Graham did, that he was inventor, but not what he did--plus people don't know about Edison's questionable business practices. Again, I agree they could work on the delivery, but I love that they've found a way to return to the educational roots *and* keep the heavy lore/dark past intact (I'm pretty iffy about the extra Doctor, though. I don't want them to completely uproot the Doctor's past by making her pre-first Doctor, it doesn't sit well with me).

      It's preachy as hell. I don't mind if the episode has a message. (Smile - Dangers of Tech, Oxygen/Thin Ice - Corporate Greed) I do mind it being so utterly in your face that it loses it's intended effect. At least for me but I could be the minority. The season started out entertaining. So far I have liked all but episodes 3 and 6. I am hoping that the rest of the season isn't as heavy handed. Yes I could stop watching but that's how the show was put on hiatus before. They had some weaker seasons and used the drop in viewers as an excuse to stop making them. Personally it would be heartbreaking to have a show end because of an inconsistent show runner.
