Rick Beato recently posted a video (th-cam.com/video/8BR6NovtywQ/w-d-xo.html) pondering whether or not he'll still be listening to metal when he's 80. I'm a life-long jazz dork creeping up on 50, who always dismissed this genre of music--drumming, especially--as a gratuitous display of technique without purpose or regard to the song as a whole. There's still a soft spot in my heart for Slayer's "Season In the Abyss", Pantera's "Vulgar Display of Power" and Anthrax's "PoT", but the more extreme metal always sounded discombobulated; that is, I didn't dismiss the technical prowess of those playing it--indeed, their chops are second to none--but it always sounded like they felt the need to cram all of those years of lessons and woodshedding into every song without ever considering that it had to be a cogent song in the first place. There's still plenty of that in extreme metal, but lately my ear has been a little less critical and I appreciate that it might be more difficult to force technique into a song without causing it to completely run off the rails right then and there--hell, music as we know it wouldn't exist if Machaut hadn't experimented with four-voice harmony in the 15th century!--than it is simply "playing what the song asks for". To answer Rick's question: Not only will I be listening to metal when I'm 80, but cats like Mr. Novikov make me want to PLAY it when I'm that age. In short, thank you, Evgeny, for inspiring me to try something new and always strive to get better.
Awensome playing man, what is that cymbal you have between those splashes? Listening to the album I thought it was the ride bell but now I see it's not.
