    "I'd buy THAT for a dollar!" and "BITCHES LEAVE." were catch phrases that carried me and my friends through college. 09:43 - one of many things in this film, but I LOVE how Ed-209 doesn't register that a person being threatened with a gun as a crime, but it does when the gun is pointed at it.

    • @samovarsa2640
      @samovarsa2640 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      45:18 - Replying to my own comment (I know) but the reason Jones' arms look so long in the fall scene is because it's a miniature shot, and to give the illusion of increased depth/distance, they used a very wide lense for the camera. Unfortunately, the miniature of Jones was not made with that in mind, hence the impression of too-long arms.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that as well about ED-209. Then again, I can’t fault man or machine for not caring if someone was threatening to shoot Dick Jones. I guess even his own creation agreed.

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR ปีที่แล้ว

    27:37 Due to Bob Morton telling The Old Man they were confident they could produce a prototype within 90 Days, it's safe to assume Alex became Robocop 3 months after he was killed. knowing this, it's reasonable the house was cleared that extensively.
    As far as the house sale, there could be many reasons why the house was not cleaned properly and the realtors don't even turn up themselves to sell the house. people could be squatting there for days on end and they would not know, but once they found out they could go as far as kill tresspassers.

    So good to see you guys again.
    One of my favorite Cyberpunk Sci Fi Action Adventure films ever made!
    Before Peter Weller was cast as RoboCop, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the role. Weller was picked as he had more of a slimmer frame, as Schwarzenegger would look bulky in the suit.
    Weller lost 3 lbs a day from wearing the suit.
    He couldn't eat any solid food except for Ice cream, oatmeal and yogurt. He had a protein shake during his lunch period.
    The special effects team had to put in an AC Unit in the suit to prevent Weller from passing out, as it was 110 degrees in Dallas Texas where they were filming.
    The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippett, whom did VFX work for Star Wars Trilogy, Dragonslayer, RoboCop 2, and 3, JURASSIC PARK, and Starship Troopers. His company Tippett Studio also did VFX work for The Twilight Saga, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Cloverfield.
    The film was a box office success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.
    It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

    "I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a 'great' movie". Yeah, fuck all that noise. 😂 This is maybe a top 5 of the 80s in any genre. From the amazing suit to the cast (especially Weller and his 6 months of mime training) to the stop motion (even the goofy falling bit) to the epic Basil Pouledoris score to Veerhoven's crazy dutchman directing to the insane script... it's a miracle it works and it's a miracle it got made. Also, its influence has been MASSIVE.. especially in gaming. Watch it a few more times, you'll "get it" eventually.

    Peter Weller's other big movie is Buckaroo Bonsai, stellar supporting cast, silly, but in a good way, fits the vibe of the night.

    @8:19, it's at least in large part not a matte painting, at minimum the elevator and main section of the building are real. They filmed some pretty bonkers real buildings.
    It does *seem* totally unrealistic to survive being shot in the head, but even JFK didn't die immediately despite horrific injuries. Not to be gruesome, but his condition was described as "The brainstem and medulla above the spinal cord was intact enough for him still make attempts to breathe"

    Pretty much all Verhoeven’s stuff is worth a Manly Movie Monday watch, from his out there as fuck Dutch language stuff to Flesh+Blood and Total Recall and Starship Troopers. Also I concur with the previous commenter who spoke about watching Conan The Barbarian (Basil Poledouris’ score is amazing, as is his work on Starship Troopers and The Hunt For Red October). I love you guys.

      The more modern(2006) dutch "black book' he made is more serious, though still a bit sexed-up. It's set in ww2, good movie.

    I have heard that actual police officers love this movie. Because Robocop is a GOOD COP. He's violent, but he remains within the boundaries of the Law. He's not a Cowboy Cop; he follows the rules and still wins. Granted, for a given value of "winning..."

    They originally wanted to give Robo a .50 Desert Eagle ( which is no small firearm) but it looked too small when he had the armor on so they created that monstrosity of a handcannon from a Beretta 93

    The ending fall looks a lot better when the screen size is about 150-160° of your field of view. The stretched arms give a perspective of the falling..... Still a bit janky, but much better than on a smaller screen.

    The point of the film above all else is the dangerous merging of corporatism & facism, had they have gone the route of romance Murphy, that would have been very predictable and on a film with this subject matter wouldnt have fitted in.
    BUT I do agree about another 10 minutes (without slowing the pace any), they could have shown Morton & Johnson at THE OCP leasure complex discussing a take over bid & how much money they stood to make from insider information.

    I like how every reaction I’ve seen to this movie, literally every single one I’ve watched goes, “he’s still alive?!”. I’m immediately reminded of Mass Effect 2, when you do Zaeed’s companion mission. “You took a bullet to the head.” “Yeah, and you survived your ship being incinerated. Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.”
