This performance was in 2015, when So Hyang was 37 years old. She is now 44 years old, and her voice is better than ever. Whrn she started singing publicly in 1996, mostly in the church community, some media folk called her the Korean Mariah Carey. Truth be told, the legendary Mariah Carey, in her prime and on her best day, did not possess the vocal stamina or breath control of So Hyang.
So Hyang is a devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After receiving a healing from God, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She is not motivated by either money or fame. She has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. She does not own any social media platforms, but is happy that others are sharing her music on TH-cam, Vimeo, etc. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about song and vocal technique at a South Korean university. So Hyang, her husband, and several assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music s ic, background singers, staging, etc.

I suggest her cover of Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing(wearing a blue dress) or her masterpiece...a song called Everyone. You will be gobsmacked. This tv show is "kinda" like a voice show. All the performers are already established famous people in Korea doing covers, etc...to a themed show. This was English classics Koreans loved. Then there's a pseudo competition vote by the audience to pick a winner. Yes, she won. She's basically a gospel singer. Really...check out Everyone. But...be real careful of copyright with her videos. It's not her, it's the Korean broadcasters. You'll need to pause, maybe filter the screen. Eagles 😥

I've watched your reactions to many other genres, and do enjoy them, but I have to admit that I think Sohyang is probably one of the best female vocalists working today. Such crystal clear tone and many different styles, whether something like this or even precise sung-rap like on Day Day. They had to fabricate a loss for her on Masked Singer so the show and she could move on. She is so good. She definitely has a gift.
Not all riffing is the same. There's a fine, but distinct, balance between what So-Hyang does here, and often in her bigger performances, and what you typically see from artists like, as you mentioned, Beyonce, Mariah, Whitney, et al., where so much of wat you see from the latter is "look what I can do," and do not serve the songs that they're performing; whereas, with So-Hyang, much more often what you see is the riffing, as profuse as they are, not only not being obtrusive, but enhancing the songs that she thusly "decorates." Here, as much riffing as there is, and there is a shit-ton, none of it screams "look what I can do." All of it is just beautiful, and is enhancing of the performance, the arrangement(s). Not many people -- none that I can think of -- can do that. There are times - especially when she was decidedly younger - when the riffing becomes a bit reminiscent of the Mariahs of the world, but in her performances such as this, in larger events, with greater production, musicians, etc., her riffing is so tasteful, so elegant, so enhancing, it's sublime. She still overdoes it at times, e.g., when she's singing at a church event, some smaller, more impromptu events, etc., but, even then, her riffing tends to be far more tasteful than those of others. BTW, this show, while a "contest" of sorts, is not at all like a "The Voice," "American Idol," etc., in that it doesn't feature largely unknown aspirants seeking fame and fortune. These are established singers, including A-listers. Some may still be seeking more fame and fortune, but, foundationally, the premise of the shows are different. The show features established pros, including current stars. Whereas the Western shows feature "amateur" pros seeking to become "professional" pros (contract-signed).
She's a preacher in South Korea, what you feel from her is the Holy Ghost. There are vocal coaches that completely break down and start crying and don't know why. I just explained to you why that happens!
You really need to go deep on Sohyang. EVERYONE is her masterpiece. There is nothing she isn't perfect at. Her cover of I have nothing by Mariah is just ridiculous. MORE PLEASE!!!!
