Imagine going out of your way to convince a large developer to put your GF's name in a game for a failed proposal, only to then later discover that someone else used that same easter egg on their own proposal with a similarly named SO and managed to pull it off. Even if he's moved on from it, that has to sting just a little bit.
This game contains an even sadder Easter egg, a few years before the game released a 4 year old Spider-Man fan passed from cancer and his father wanted to put Spider-Man on his grave stone but Disney threatened to sue him for copyright infringement so he couldn’t. In the video game’s cemetery you can find a grave with the boys name not too far from uncle bens grave.
I think what's also interesting is that in the sequel "Marvel Spider Man 2" if you go where the proposal was on the movie theater. It got changed into the clinic, and it's called the "H.E.A.R.T Clinic." I'm not sure if this is Insomniac Games' response of what happened after the proposal or it's just a big coincidence.
My favorite example of "getting your name in the game" is when Disney and Squaresoft ran a contest to have one of the secret bosses in the first Kingdom Hearts be named after the winner. Said winner was a guy from New York called "Kurt Zisa" and thus the secret boss in Agrabah was named after him. Which, honestly, it just sounds obvious now because his name is "Kurt" but for the longest time I thought it was some weird made up name fitting for a weird desert snake monster.
I never found the idea of proposing your love publicly a good idea, I like to keep thing between two lover so that it would feel more like "this is a special moment for only two of us" and won't seem like a big embarrassment for other people to know when it's fail
It's somewhat poor taste to choose a gift for someone else based on what the _giver_ would like to receive. He liked Spider-Man and video games, and wrongly assumed his girlfriend would be wooed by Spider-Man and video games. Young children often do this, because they haven't yet developed "theory of mind"; the understanding that other people have different thoughts, feelings and interests from their own.
There was another video game proposal where a guy created a level in Super Mario Maker for his gf to play and she loved it and said yes. It was pretty sweet and adorable.
When the Trivia Game You Don't Know Jack was on Facebook, somebody arranged for a proposal to be given in the form of a question on a special episode by the host. What's cool about that is that the actual proposal was recorded and is still on youtube! (She said yes)
I remember back when mother 3 was being developed on the n64 there was this competition to show of this piece of technology Nintendo where working on where you can capture someone's face and put it in the game. However mother 3 never came out on n64. It got cancelled and remade from scratch on the game with no sign of the contest winner. Probably up there with one of the worst ways of being included in a video game outside of this case. Well, if you consider this being included
I don't think Tyler expected this to actually happen, likely expecting Insomniac to ignore his post like so many others. But when they actually messaged back, he probably had an "oh shit, now what do i do" moment before deciding to forge ahead with this. I hope Tyler and Maddie find happiness, and I'm pretty glad that at least someone got to use this successfully for its intended purpose, so good for Mitch too.
Massive proposals like that are a terrible idea. Doing something small is a better idea. I hope Maddie and Tayler are doing alright after this whole thing happened

After watching this video, I went to the location in Spider-Man 2 to see if the theater was still there. It's a H.E.A.R.T Clinic now. Damn, the proposal bombed so hard the whole theater shut down.
The spiderman bed spread got me pretty good, then the double whammy of the ex saying she used to play mom and his save all being a proposal in a spiderman video game. As much as I love spider-man, she definitely made the right choice lol.
Even if she was interested, she probably wouldn’t have thought the marquee in the video game was directed at her. There’s a lot of videos of failed marriage proposals like that you could probably find here on TH-cam. It just seems like a mess doing all that.
Oooh, that hot air balloon clip is making my skin crawl. "Hey guys, does anybody have one of those base jump parachute packs by chance? I've gotta get outta this basket, like immediately."
2:18 a small nitpick (and I could be wrong and this could just be a specific version feature) but the game asks you to put in your name and what you put there will appear on the name tag as a sort of meta commentary on free will. You likely confused it with many other games who did actually do stuff like that. Correct me if I'm wrong as I wanna learn more about this.
theres a youtube arg called catghost, and each video had a game attached. each of these games had an easter egg for typing a certain word, usually resulting in something creepy. the one for the ending of the series also had one, but instead of being creepy, it lead to a proposal from one creator to the other creator (they were a couple and worked on the series together) i think thats unironically the cutest way to propose to someone.
God my heart I love the two happy ending stories at the end 💕💕😭😭 This video hits kinda different tho cos me and my bf just broke up (on very good terms tho we're still very close!)
Saddest easter egg? Isn't this the same game that shows the Twin Towers in the reflection of the Freedom Tower? It's insane, and the developers swear up and down that they didn't put it there.
Why are you framing it like they’re lying about putting the Easter egg in and it was obvious intentional they’d have actually no reason to lie about that especially when the feedback to it was positive
Reminds me of this one local radio station that for months when you tuned in instead of displaying the song names (which I HATED having removed) it read “x female will u marry me?” Only to be updated like a month later with “SHE SAID YES” 3 years later and it still there, unlike Maddie’s yes
I think the issue was Tyler was dating a girl who didn't like or had the same interests as he did. Yeah his financial issues was a big problem too. So if the person you're dating doesn't like the same stuff you like the relations won't last long.
If you are going to propose to a girl through a video game you should: 1) make sure she likes video games and 2) do what the second guy did and make a little custom game for her or if you really can't figure out coding pay someone to make a short little custom game for her.
so he lies that she left him to be with his brother, but says he didn´t mean to talk crap about either of them I can totally understand why she left him
Spider-Man 2018 is just packed full of easter eggs, man. Avengers Tower and Nelson & Murdock being my favourite. But my god I hadn't heard about this. I only played it when it came to PC.
Whenever I hear about TV related marriage proposals, I can't help but think of that character in Fresh Prince proposing to Hilary in during a live bungie jumping broadcast. "Hillary Banks, will you marry m-..." And the whole family just goes quiet. Will breaking the tension with an observation that things probably wasn't supposed to happen like THAT.
happened to me once, my ghost ex propose to me just me, we just date a mth, i said no in front of his friends. he straight up block me from all socials & gone like missing person. the most wtf happened to me.

After watching this video, I went to the location in Spider-Man 2 to see if the theater was still there. It's a H.E.A.R.T Clinic now. Damn, the proposal bombed so hard the whole theater shut down.
Do wavy and wang coordinate upload schedule? No complaints here
you bout to make me cry with that last little story about the game developer guy
On god its been 6 years. I remember when this was discovered. 6 years since that game came out.
she really hit him with the "I'm not happy"
my hubby also proposed to me making a videogame, the thingy no longer runs on new PCs but I keep the file for sentimental value
The spiderman bed spread got me pretty good, then the double whammy of the ex saying she used to play mom and his save all being a proposal in a spiderman video game. As much as I love spider-man, she definitely made the right choice lol.
Hey, a Whang video I can watch while eating!
Mmm a delicious thanksgiving meal. Thank you, Whang.
I have haven't been getting notifications for your videos in over a year so it's good to see your videos in my notifications again.
I've gotta get outta this basket, like immediately."
thank you for ending the video on a positive note with that 2D platformer game story, I think I needed that
2:18 a small nitpick (and I could be wrong and this could just be a specific version feature) but the game asks you to put in your name and what you put there will appear on the name tag as a sort of meta commentary on free will. You likely confused it with many other games who did actually do stuff like that. Correct me if I'm wrong as I wanna learn more about this.
theres a youtube arg called catghost, and each video had a game attached. each of these games had an easter egg for typing a certain word, usually resulting in something creepy. the one for the ending of the series also had one, but instead of being creepy, it lead to a proposal from one creator to the other creator (they were a couple and worked on the series together)
i think thats unironically the cutest way to propose to someone.
The dog tags were also in Twin Snakes, the Gamecube remake of the first Metal Gear Solid. I used to speed run the all dog tags category :)
I had only heard that the sign in the Spiderman game was an actually proposal so i was in for a lot of surprises
That ending is just so gosh darn wholesome, I love it
Dude, did you use Truxton for some of the music in this? That's awesome!
Yeah, I've been playing a lot of different SHMUPs lately and love Truxton's music and thought it'd be fun to use.
I also noticed this and geeked out a bit! 😅
Surf Wisely.
God my heart
I love the two happy ending stories at the end 💕💕😭😭
This video hits kinda different tho cos me and my bf just broke up (on very good terms tho we're still very close!)
I remember reading about this when it happened. Good lord, it's been five years now.
You know it's a Whang ad segment when that River City Ransom Shop Music kicks in
Bro at the end is an absolute LEGEND
Saddest easter egg? Isn't this the same game that shows the Twin Towers in the reflection of the Freedom Tower? It's insane, and the developers swear up and down that they didn't put it there.
Why are you framing it like they’re lying about putting the Easter egg in and it was obvious intentional they’d have actually no reason to lie about that especially when the feedback to it was positive
Got a bit teary eyed at the game development proposal. What a lovely surprise.
that second story was totaly wholesome
Reminds me of this one local radio station that for months when you tuned in instead of displaying the song names (which I HATED having removed) it read “x female will u marry me?” Only to be updated like a month later with “SHE SAID YES” 3 years later and it still there, unlike Maddie’s yes
I think the issue was Tyler was dating a girl who didn't like or had the same interests as he did. Yeah his financial issues was a big problem too.
So if the person you're dating doesn't like the same stuff you like the relations won't last long.
If you are going to propose to a girl through a video game you should: 1) make sure she likes video games and 2) do what the second guy did and make a little custom game for her or if you really can't figure out coding pay someone to make a short little custom game for her.
so he lies that she left him to be with his brother, but says he didn´t mean to talk crap about either of them
I can totally understand why she left him
Love the New Jack shirt Justin
Its a kind gesture, i think its sweet.
I can’t believe I had just witness a Whang video with no depravity on it. Can’t believe it, I was waiting for the gross part 😂😂😂😂
I love the rare Whang videos with wholesome endings 👍
Spider-Man 2018 is just packed full of easter eggs, man. Avengers Tower and Nelson & Murdock being my favourite. But my god I hadn't heard about this. I only played it when it came to PC.
That's insane the developer's actually put that in the game for a random guy on twitter
this is the spiderman game version of that sad walking spiderman meme, explosions and all
Holy shit. What is the banging chiptune in this video?
That last story was actually pretty damn cute
Whenever I hear about TV related marriage proposals, I can't help but think of that character in Fresh Prince proposing to Hilary in during a live bungie jumping broadcast.
"Hillary Banks,will you marry m-..."
And the whole family just goes quiet. Will breaking the tension with an observation that things probably wasn't supposed to happen like THAT.
Wait did Kotaku actually do journalism??
Nope, they took other people's work from Reddit.
@@TheJcris87 Yeah this checks out
happened to me once, my ghost ex propose to me just me, we just date a mth, i said no in front of his friends. he straight up block me from all socials & gone like missing person. the most wtf happened to me.
She dumped a gamer with no ambition AND an anger problem? THE FOOL! Those guys are one in a million!!
My highschool buddy was in 3 games by name, they where sports games but it's something
Maybe they can put in an update patch where you can change the name on the to suit who you're proposing to.
her saying oh me n his brother are just friends .. is the most bs thing ever
0:53 - Um; ok??? Whatever works……
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You should “NEVER EVER” put
“THE PERSON YOU LOVE THE MOST”
In a “SITUATION LIKE THIS”
“STUPID FUCKING IDIOT”!!!!!
Oh good I needed a pick me up today
Now this is something I wanna watch while eating
Not about that guy messy jesus thats disgusting
