Is Your Overlanding Build Ever Really Complete?

  • In this week's episode of the podcast, I wanted to talk about a topic I see a lot. People think they have to "build" their vehicle out completely before they can go on an overlanding trip. Conversely, sometimes people get caught up in the build and then have a really built rig but feel like they can't ever go camping because they're constantly modifying their built rig.
In this episode, I'm going to walk through a newer overlanders journey to build a rig and some real world recommendations for how to approach that build and also get out to camp and explore. Then I'm going to hit on more established builds and how to approach continuing improvements and modifications. Finally, I'll finish the episode by talking through my setup and how I'm prioritizing my build over the next year or so to give you some real world examples of how I'm eating my own cooking, :D.

It would argue that rigs are never really done, as much as I wish it would be the case. Once you get to the next big milestone in your build you most likely discover the next thing you’d like to change or upgrade.

    Done?
    lol
Why wait for it to be “done” to go camping? Just go.
I’ve been building a camper on the back of my 03’ Tacoma since 2019.
It took 5 months to get it “functional” enough to go on trips.
    After that I just go.
I’ll bring tools and parts and work on it at campsites. I do a lot of solo camping so it’s something to do at camp.

Guess you didn't watch the video, :D. But I agree with you! It's kind of never done and you should always take what you've got and get out to explore without letting your rig not being "done" stop you.

@@AllThingsOverlanding Lol...guilty as charged. I was watching it in the background while at work and I think I commented before the video was over.
BTW, great content. Keep it up!

Not a clue about real overlanding IMO. A very USA centric viewpoint

Haha, ahh gatekeeping. Well, I am in America so you’re right that my view is US centric.

Nice tips. I'm early in my planning/build stage, if you can call it that. I have a Subaru Outback Wilderness that I've gone on a weeklong trip camping out of the back of with nothing but a self-inflating camping mat, a pillow, and some fans and a lamp. When I got back, I considered what worked and what didn't work and have decided on a couple of modifications that will help me camp better on my next trip in about 2 weeks. Instead of building for what I wish I could do, I'm doing it based on what I actually do and what could work better next time. I'm about to get a new Tundra and this will also be built out incrementally.
My point is that we all camp/travel differently and have different comfort levels when traveling down unimproved roads. I travel solo, so I have little interest in hard core trails in a Jeep that I could get stuck on or break at any moment and be many miles from help. If I was going in groups, I'd be much more interested in that. If I find myself going places that I turn back on because I don't have a steel bumper or winch or big tires, then that will be a consideration for my next step. Overlanding channels like yours and Arkansas Offroad are cool, and I can get ideas from y'all, but I have to live within my own budget and my own style of travel, which is currently much more car camping/saving money by not getting hotels and doing a little off the beaten path roads rather than traversing Africa, as cool as that might be and if I had a budget like Expedition Overland does.

All good points and totally agree with you. Honestly, nothing wrong ever with turning back. Technically, "overlanders" are completely different from offroaders and we SHOULD be turning around rather than risking getting stuck or potentially damaging our vehicles as our goal is to explore without needing outside help, so I love your take on it. Subarus are also super capable, get great gas mileage, and they're reliable so I think it's a great choice. Tundras are great too, but just a different thing. :D

I have 10 years+ into my land rover build. I just look at it as a learning experience. Just takes time to figure out what works and what doesn't. Sometimes that is expensive, but that is just part of it. I never delayed a trip for anything build related though. You can go on a trip with just decent tires. I am always tweaking something but it has slowed down a lot. I have a buddy who has gone through probably 6 major rebuilds on a tacoma. He has spent 10x what I have on build.

I think reading a lot is the key. Before I buy my suspension I did a lot of reading and watched many videos and the final result was satisfying.

I bought my 2023 Tacoma TRD OR ACLB to camp out of. Not planning on going wild. I am wanting to just add sliders, F/R bumpers, 255/85R16 pizza cutters AT C load tires and a cap to get out camping eventually

I consider my Xterra "done" in that everything I wanted to add and wanted it to do has been accomplished. Now does that mean there aren't a few tweaks I can make or things I could add in the future? Yes. But so far I've resisted it because I know the focus of the Xterra has changed with the Frontier build in progress.
It's gone really from the build phase to the upkeep phase, because just like Home Ownership, it's never really done in terms of spending money on it.

We have a Subaru ascent. And we put better tires on because we got flats. I don't do TH-cam and have company's sending me stuff all the time. That's why people are never done. I have a friend who doese TH-cam. And when ever a company sends him stuff he has to say that camping stuff is so great.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, good point. I definitely see that with larger TH-cam channels. They are always getting bigger and better offers and it's hard to turn that down (or not check out that stuff) so sometimes they have to keep modding to keep getting the free stuff, haha.

Building an over lander is the same as making money, scoring points, prepping, or storing ammo. The answer is always more.
