This is my second year running a slow living and minimalism youtube channel.
But there are times when I struggle with living the life I wish I could. Some days, my life is the opposite of slow and minimalist. It can get hectic and even stressful.
It is only when I give myself the opportunity to slow down that certain things begin to hit home. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, feeling stuck or struggling with breaking a toxic cycle, this video may resonate with you.
When I am busy, I tend to rush everything to keep up with what seems like a conveyor belt of things to do. And along with doing things fast, I was also making decisions quickly instead of deliberately. But rushed thinking often leads to bad decisions we end up regretting eventually.
It may seem counterintuitive but it is when things are busy and hectic and stressful that it is imperative to slow down.
Slowing down allows us to zoom out and have a clearer view of the direction we’re heading with all the running around. Do the things that keep us busy take us closer or farther from the direction we intend to go? And more importantly, are we still following our own path or someone else’s?
When we slow down, we optimize intentionality over passivity. This way, we're doing what's aligned with our purpose and priority, instead of letting others dictate your path for you.
There are standards for nearly everything in this world, and being higher or lower than these standards dictate whether we are in the accepted normal range or not.
But if we start obsessing with numbers and standards, that's when things get toxic.
I was caught up in the view count, the analytics, the numbers and ranking. I talk about slowness in my videos, yet there I was, silently playing the comparison game.
I was comparing my worst to other people's best, which never results in anything good.
Oubaitori 桜梅桃李 is “a Japanese idiom which is a reminder that everyone is on their own journey through life.”
Slowing down allows us to pause and recognize how our perception distorts the fact that we are not what others are and our journey is not theirs, and that's okay.
    As the saying goes:
A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.
The modern world is marked by constant acceleration, getting ahead and so many distractions. But when we allow ourselves to get sucked into the hustle, we tend to make automated, impulsive and default decisions instead of carefully thought out conscious choices.
We may think we're making more progress by going too fast but it's actually the opposite.
Slowing down has given me some calm and clarity in a world that seems to be moving faster and faster. We don't need to go on a month long retreat to do a reset so we can appreciate our daily life more
By simply taking a small chunk of my day to slow down, this helps me to remain grounded and at peace.
Let me end this video with this quote from Haemin Sunim, in his book,The Things We Only See When We Slow Down, which is my inspiration for today's video:
"When your mind is joyful and compassionate, the world is, too. When your mind is filled with negative thoughts, the world appears negative, too. When you feel overwhelmed and busy, remember that you are not powerless. When your mind rests, the world also rests."

This is very good. Funny thought though - I watched it in 1.5 speed. I guess I need to slow down :)
