The increasing trend of immigrants leaving Canada has become a significant concern, as highlighted in recent reports and personal accounts. The reasons for this exodus are multifaceted and include challenges related to economic integration, a sense of belonging, racism, homeownership issues, and more favorable economic opportunities in other countries.
Economic Challenges and Integration: The Institute for Canadian Citizenship's report "The Leaky Bucket", produced in collaboration with the Conference Board of Canada, emphasizes the growing trend of onward migration, with a notable surge in 2017 and 2019. The study underlines the importance of retaining immigrants in Canada, especially given their crucial role in sectors like housing and healthcare. The report suggests that failure to integrate and retain immigrants could impact Canada's future prosperity and economic growth.
Cost of Living and Job Competition: Personal stories shared with CTV News echo these findings. Many immigrants have reported difficulties due to the high cost of living, competition for jobs, and affordable housing. For example, Julian Cristancho, who immigrated from Colombia, and Emilson Jose from India, expressed concerns about the high cost of living, including challenges in finding affordable housing and the strain of long commutes. These factors have led some, like Saikiran Yellavula, who struggled to find work relevant to his education, to consider leaving Canada. Bernard De Vaal's experience highlights issues like social isolation and concerns about future financial security. These experiences reflect a broader sentiment among immigrants who feel let down by the 'Canadian dream', citing issues like health-care woes and an anti-working class government.
Immigration Policy and Economic Impact: Canada's immigration policy, despite its intention to boost the economy and population growth, has faced criticism. The Royal Bank of Canada pointed out that the current annual immigrant intake is insufficient to stabilize the population's age structure. While immigration has contributed to Canada's economic growth, it also poses challenges, including exacerbating housing shortages and impacting inflation. The Bank of Canada acknowledges that immigration has both fueled demand (thus increasing prices) and helped keep labor costs down. However, the increasing tendency of immigrants to leave Canada poses a challenge to the country's dependence on immigration for population and economic expansion.
In summary, the departure of immigrants from Canada is driven by a complex mix of economic, social, and policy-related factors. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach that encompasses better economic integration, supportive social environments, and responsive immigration policies.
Canada is known for its inclusive immigration policies and welcoming approach to immigrants, but like any other country, it does have its share of challenges and issues related to immigration and immigrant integration. Here's a brief overview of some of the topics you mentioned:
Immigrant Challenges in Canada: Immigrants to Canada often face several challenges when settling in the country. These may include language barriers, difficulties in obtaining recognition for foreign qualifications and work experience, cultural adjustment, and finding suitable employment.
Canadian Economic Integration: Canada places a strong emphasis on economic immigration, with programs like the Express Entry system prioritizing skilled workers. The goal is to ensure that immigrants contribute to the Canadian economy and are economically integrated into society.
High Cost of Living in Canada: Canada's major cities, such as Toronto and Vancouver, have high costs of living, particularly when it comes to housing. The cost of housing, along with other expenses like healthcare and education, can be a significant challenge for both newcomers and existing residents.
Canadian Housing Crisis: Many Canadian cities are facing a housing crisis characterized by skyrocketing home prices and a shortage of affordable housing. This poses a significant challenge for immigrants who are trying to find suitable and affordable accommodation.
Canadian Dream vs. Reality: The idea of the "Canadian Dream" is often associated with opportunities, freedom, and a high quality of life. However, the reality for immigrants can sometimes fall short of these expectations due to the challenges they face in areas like employment, housing, and integration.

Living Canada is typical. Similar in U.S. now. But our people are sticking on due to children education. Best living comforts on earth, not willing to go back to India. Going are in lakhs, coming in are hundreds.
