Remember, Grace, the point of learning French is not to be better than anyone else; the only competition is between you and the little voice inside your head that wants to quit. So immerse yourself in the language with heartfelt intensity, continually improve and reap the fulfillment. This is success!
2 things about learning french (or any language): 1) you don't want to be good at learning at first. You retain the most when you make mistakes and learn how to correct them! 2) listen to some music for 15 minutes before the class starts. It uses the same parts of your brain as language and is like a warm up before exercising You're doing really well!
I've been learning French since GCSE (I'm 28 now). My best tip is immerse yourself in the language! Listen to French music, watch French TV (I recommend Lupin) and speak with French people even if it's scary. Immersive learning alongside formal lessons is the most natural and effective way to learn just like we did as children.
Salut ! I'm french and I only finaly learned english when I immersed myself! Also I really want to find myself a penpal so if anyone wants to speak french with me and sometime english, I'm there :D I'm 26, super patient and have lots of free time !
Hi Grace! You should definitely try to incorporate French entertainment into your routine (e.g. watching Friends, which you know so well but in French with subtitles. That way you'll know what's going on and can learn the words quicker) It's an easier way to get used to hearing the words and pronunciation :) Hope this helps xx
Great vid as always Grace! I have found watching shows/movies I am familiar with and putting subtitles on in the language I want to learn has been super helpful for retention/learning new phrases!
I don't know if this was already mentioned in the comments, but when I learned Italian and we came to the chapter of like furniture, food etc., I took post it's and worte it down in italian and I stuck it on the corresponding piece of furniture hahah. My mum was really annoyed, because our fridge looked really funny with all the yellow sticky notes. But everytime I went to that specific thing I repeated it in my head and said it out loud and it really helped! I also just talked to myself no matter if right or wrong just speaking it out loud helps so much with gaining confidence in talking. And something my Italian teacher told me was, every evening take your notebook and try to write a little recap (just one page max) about your day. Try to write freely, not with to much grammar checking and the next day check it for grammar mistakes or whatever using your books, notes, etc. and even a translator like deepl. It's all about repetition and active recall - trust me suddenly you stand in your kitchen and think hmm cosa voglio mangiare oggi? Penso che mi preparerò un panino. (= what do i wanna eat today? i think i'll make a sandwich) lol and once you've cracked the code and start thinking things in a different language it's GO TIMEEEE. Hope this helps! xxxx
hello grace! definitely consuming content in the language you want to learn helps a lot, be it movies with subtitles, youtube videos on the topics you enjoy or songs of course, it won't help you immediately especially with learning grammar, but it's still very helpful in the long run good luck! 💕
Grace, my first language is french and let me tell you, even french speaking people struggle with french 😂 Don’t give up! If you’re determined I am confident you will progress! Props to you for challenging yourself!
Something that will help you pick up French quicker, is to use it in everyday life, even if it's just talking to yourself. For example, try explaining your journey to the shops in French, this really helped to cement directions, prepositions and place names in my memory. I would love to watch you do a food haul in French! You'll be able to watch your progress which will keep you motivated. (And congratulations to Liverpool and your dad :) )
Grace I visited London in early May with my family and we stayed extra days because of how fun your vids made the city look! I loved it and will definitely be back :)
Hever Castle! 😍 my favourite place to visit with my dad and granny when I go over to see them, even 30 years later, still my favourite place ❤️ your video brought back such good memories, though it made me miss them so much too !
Been ill the last couple of days and was v happy to see you'd posted a vlog I could cozy up with! I'm just coming to the end of my French and German degree and I think the key to getting better is just practice and repetition! Write loads of example sentences and hopefully it'll start to set in! Best of luck Grace :)
As someone who is bilingual in French/English. Language is a rollercoaster! You only learn by mistakes you make , you just have to keep going. You’ll get there ☺️ I’m learning Korean as I’m going there next year so I feel you on the brain frazzle lol as I keep reminding myself it’s the small wins & I’ve realised I have learnt a lot even tho it feels like I haven’t.
For your hayfever, you could use lemon, lavender and peppermint essential oils mixed with a bit of coconut oil and apply topically. You can find little roller ball bottles on amazon that are great for carrying around in your bag/car. My husband uses it now after years of hayfever tablets (you become immune if you use so many).
Papa Booth's face when he walks in on you using the eyelash curlers, hilarious 🤣🤣🤣he looked positively stunned/shocked/confused and even forgot what he was originally going to ask you,!!!! lol 😅
Well done for starting French! My biggest tip would be to keep listening to French things, whether that’s TH-cam videos (I love the EasyFrench channel), music, tv series, whatever. That way your brain will start to tune into the sounds and you’ll find it easier to recognise common words. Even better if you can read the subtitles or lyrics while you’re listening. Keep speaking it too, obviously you’re having lessons but when you get more confident see if you can find a conversation group or just someone to practise and chat with as you’ll learn quicker the more you use it 😊
I am learning French too, I find it helpful to watch to simple kids shows on YT since I’m a visual learner. And for the kinetic part I have to write or text in French to retain. Good luck G!
Grack it’s def worth chatting to a pharmacist about your hayfever pickle if you’re still trying to figure it all out! There are lots of different types of antihistamines, and pharmacists are usually pretty well-read on ‘em all (and their diff side effects!) 🌞
It will get easier once you pass the big first step, don’t put too much pressure on yourself! 😊 I love watching your videos because they’re fun but also to practice my english listening skills and everyday vocabulary! (My mother tongue is french)
A proven way to help you retain language learning (and other skills-based learning!) is to tap into your episodic memory, rather than depending only on memorisation. That means making some experiences in which to practise your French, such as following some baking recipes in French. You know a lot about baking so you will be able to decipher what you read, and then every time you bake you will notice how many French terms for baking you now remember. Another idea is watching vlogs and tiktoks in French (once without captions and then once with) and browsing websites you're familiar with, but with the language set to French (like the & Other Stories site if you shop there).
Hi! I've studied French and English philology and now I am learning Czech (my 4th year) and Korean (I've started just year ago) and I have to say that French is a VERY difficult language. So don't beat yourself up! Immersing yourself in a language is extremely important. It's best to find French music, that you enjoy and watch French films or English/American films with French dubbing (fun fact, A LOT of films are dubbed, not only those for kids). I enjoyed watching all disney animated movies in French and Czech and it helped me a lot with understanding and with the "melody" of a language. WIsh you all the best!
Waiting eagerly for the Booths to have the first Sunday lunch BBQ of the year instead of a roast. Then we know Summer is officially on it's way/here!! 🙌🍴🍗🌭🌤️ (Talking about bbq's with the Korean bbq place)
Just come back from Hawaii and we had one of those ice creams from KITH. Never heard of it before, but now I know its in London I will definitely be visiting soon 👍
Good for you for persevering with your French classes. You'll get the hang of it as long as you don't give up 💪❤️ don't compare yourself to others either. It never helps!!! Comparison is the thief of all joy as you always say !!!
I agree with @AliceBedford, that learning a language takes a lot of practice. In order to retain information there are 3 steps: 1) read 2) say aloud 3) write, and, well, a 4th--repeat, repeat, repeat. It takes a lot of time and repetition. Put sticky notes on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, on your closet door. You'll see your verbs and vocab over and over and it will fall into place in your head eventually! PS Your dad is a legend!
The last time I was I France I spoke French, German, English and added some hysterical giggling to the whole mess. I still managed to order what I wanted and get where I wanted. :-D
Grace you should definitely venture out to New Malden for great authentic korean food! it's worth the journey for sure, as there are so many restaurants to try out :)
I'm wondering if you relate to any of the great tiktok videos by folks with ADHD or therapist that specialize in ADHD? Something that I'm specifically thinking about with this video is your struggle to retain the brand new info, which would involve your working memory. And then from past videos when you've talked about clumsiness. Of course just two behaviors don't mean anything, but if you find that it's more than just two, it may really help to look further. Either way, just looking into ways to improve your working memory could be helpful with learning a new language. Love your videos and I have lots of notes in my travel journal from your travels (day trips and longer) to visit one day!
Try watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S in French. First with English subtitles and later French and eventually none. I learned a lot of the English I know by watching TV shows. Also helps a lot with pronunciation!
A friend of mine moved to the US from South America with ZERO English and learned the language by watching TV and movies. He now speaks fluent English, although he sometimes sounds like Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. I actually Googled how to say Dirty Harry in French for you, but it turns out they say Dirty Harry. So don't stress too much; some things are universal and people will appreciate your efforts.
Bonjour, if anyone is looking for a french correspondante, I'm here ! I'm 26, open minded, patient and have lots of free time, also I love grace's video so we already have something in commun !
Your dad suddenly sounds exactly like the voice “my money dont jiggle jiggle it folds i like to see u wiggle wiggle for sure” and now im dyingggg he needs to do it
Hi Grace can you please let us know which recipe you used for the chocolate fudge cake on your gracksnacks instagram ? You said you were going to share it a few weeks back. Have we missed it ? Thank you.
Anyone else wondering how the heck Grace managed to walk home from the shop, with a China mug randomly chucked in her bag......and somehow didn't break it? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂❤️ Xx
Supposedly watching a show with the captions on in the language your learning is meant to help or read a book you know in the language your learning is meant to be good as well. Immersion learning is meant to be helpful
I thought she was talking about senbei, when she was saying rice crackers. Rice cakes and Senbei, two totally different things, espically if making snickers with it
Ooooh!! Extra kisses to sweet Banks! I hope she continues to improve. ❤️ Conjugation. After all these years, that's still difficult for me. Your name is Grace for a reason. Remember to live up to your name and cut yourself some slack. You'll get it. 😉
Yes!!! French it’s great. All the love from a Frenchie. Listen, French is hard so if anyone gives you a hard time (and I include my fellow *insert posh French noises hignon hignon * farty Frenchmen) ignore them. 👍😍
Remember, Grace, the point of learning French is not to be better than anyone else; the only competition is between you and the little voice inside your head that wants to quit. Exactly. It's not my first language, but a very close second. And STILL, conjugation is my worst nightmare.

Grace you should write a cook book organized into sections like dinners lunches breakfasts and pudding!
Grace, when you get to a certain level with your french, it would be a super fun challenge to do a blog entirely in french for us!
Grace I visited London in early May with my family and we stayed extra days because of how fun your vids made the city look! I loved it and will definitely be back :)
Thank you Fairy Grace for reminding us our golden hearts ~ your presence inspires truth💛✨🍃🧚🏼♀️💫

@UpwardsDaydream That's why you mix with coconut oil. 10-15 drops of each oil and 5 tbp of coconut oil at least.
I recommend Conjuguemos if you're finding conjugation hard! It was originally made for Spanish but it has French verbs too and it's fantastic!
Papa Booth's face when he walks in on you using the eyelash curlers, hilarious 🤣🤣🤣he looked positively stunned/shocked/confused and even forgot what he was originally going to ask you,!!!! lol 😅

Learning songs in the language helps me.
I agree with the kids books m I’m reading Harry Potter in three languages at the same time.

Languages is super hard! I've been learning Arabic and it took me ages to feel like I'd made progress but don't worry you'll nail it! Xx
My languages teacher at school would put films on or programmes on and have the language in the subtitles and it helped to learn phrases :)
I was at Hever Castle on Saturday for my 30th birthday, was so gutted I didn't see you when I saw your insta stories! Would have been the best!
That thunderstorm was amazing to watch over the Solent! Went on for ages

Just come back from Hawaii and we had one of those ice creams from KITH. Never heard of it before, but now I know its in London I will definitely be visiting soon 👍
I recommended the YT channel Easy French!! It's good for real conversation, not so formal.
Aww bless Banksy. Hope she's recovering now x

Nobody is better at being you than YOU 😘 🙌❤️🇨🇦
Kith is actually a clothing brand! This kith ice cream place is one of their pop up ideas :) xx
