I know it's not books, but Katara and Toph are amazing girl characters who are nuanced and strong without being flawless, and grow so much during the series.

When I first read Harry Potter, I thought Hermione was the best. But then Order of Phoenix happened and I was blown away by Luna. I always think she deserved more page time.

Annabeth was one of my first role models and she’s absolutely amazing. Her character itself was so compelling and she was actually kinda relatable. She is one of my all time favorite book characters.
I think the most inspiring character for me would be Beth March from little woman. The way she deals with life problems in a gentle and strong way.

Violet Baudelaire, loved her inventiveness and resourcefulness and her responsibility as the oldest sibling which she copes with so well despite the series of unfortunate events she is forced to navigate with her younger siblings
One of the big ones for me is Lucy from Narnia. I just loved her childlike wonder and her faith and the way she cares for others. I haven't read it in a while but she's one that has always stuck in my head as a character that I find inspiring and relate to.
Lizzie Bennet and Jo March are incredible. From fantasy, Nynaeve is my absolute favourite.
All of the March sisters from Little Women inspire me in different ways.
Someone that inspired me was Tohru Honda from Fruits Baskets (a really delightful manga, I recommend it). I love how her kindness could effect the people around her and she was an influence for the better. I wanted to be like that.
Oh, and another woman who is inspiring in a manga situation was Hana from Wolf Children. She is one of the strongest mother i have ever seen in fiction.
Tohru is a wonderful character! The way she interacts with thw Sohma family through the story is amazing. She and Nanami from Kamisama Kiss was so inspiering characters!

Adding to the percy Jackson ones, or technically heroes of Olympus, my favorite character of all time is probably Reyna Ramirez Arellano

Child Sofi adored Pippi Longstockings, who is the best feminist role model I can think of.
Teenage Sofi was crazy about Ciri from the Witcher, and found strenght in her to help handle the teenage dramas. At least they are not forcing me to the figthing arena, I thought.
Adult Sofi got back to many of childhood favourites and picked Mymble from the moomins as an inspirational, mentally stable character, who "Feels absolutely splendid from tip to toe."

My most inspired female literary character is Annabeth Chase, for sure. She had so much pain and heartbreak behind her story, but you know, she still fought.

Jane Eyre and Sarah Crewe from A Little Princess were my favorites growing up. As an adult I don't like the romance in Jane Eyre but I still love her as a character. Both of them are people who make the best of whatever life throws at them while never letting it change who they are or how they treat others. They both have an ability to be treated horribly for who they are and not let it change them, or even be bitter or hateful in the end to the those people, while still recognizing their treatment wasn't ok.
As a child, The Little Princess was such a sad book for me. I’d always cry when I read it. Especially in the scene where she gets the news that her father died.
Hermione and Jo March are probably the two that have inspired me the most.

I got here quick enough to suggest this series to you! Have you ever read the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce, Merphy? It’s easily my favorite of her books and the characters are amazing.
The main character is not just strong for herself, but teaches others and I think that’s so cool.
I know you, like me, don’t like the rape trope in fantasy. In this series there is a detail where there is a goddess temple where women defend it and any woman being abused can find refuge there.
I would like to second this suggestion. It’s a really good series. It’s about a girl who wants to become a knight but refuses to hide her gender in order to do it.
I've always loved Thea Beckman's women and i like the protaganists in Kerstin Gier's Silber and Ruby Red. Oh and the graceling series
I was reluctant to dive into Skyward at first since I'm not into YA, but man was I pleasantly surprised! Spensa was written very well and M-Bot, of course, was amazingly well done!
I've loved Lizzy Bennett since I was 15. I was reading thru a list of 100 Greatest Books (or something like that) to improve my mind (there was a great deal of room for improvement) and got down to Pride and Prejudice on the list. I was a 15 or 16 year old "jock" (self-described) and reading a Period Romance was outside of any reasonable box but I soldiered thru and was caught from the 1st line. Didn't understand anything about the social context in time or distance but I was in agony that Lizzy would marry Mr Collins/ Mr Wickham/ Mr Darcy and not live happily ever after... When I finished the book and looked desperately around for a sequel, I clearly remember saying to myself that I would never read a more beautifully written book in my whole life. Laughable for a 15 year-old pimply boy to say, but prescient in a fabulous way. I'm proud of that person. And I've spent my whole life wondering why Mr Wickham would run off with Lydia, or why Lydia would run off with Mr Wickham and how Jane Austen could write such an intricate subplot for secondary characters that has both nothing and everything to do with the central idea of the book which I love now more than ever and discover new things in even after a 50th reading.

Fanny Price is steadfast and true to herself.
Cordelia Naismith from the Vorkosigan series is a very well-written and realistic example of how to write a "strong female character" without coming off as a *(sigh)* "Mary Sue". She's honorable, very intelligent and works tirelessly to make the world she lives in a better place bit by bit. She has a *massive* presence in the books she appears and most of the supporting cast are better off from having had her in their lives.
Really great video!! I haven't read any of the books you mentioned, but I plan to read almost every one of them. My favorite fictional female character, Inej Ghafa from Six of Crows. She's just so, so strong and I love her so much! I could and have gone on many rants about how great she is!!
My favorites are Annabeth Chase from PJO, Mia Corvere from Nevernight, and Laurie Juspecyk from Watchmen. Laurie in particular is such an underrated character and I feel like she was done kinda dirty in the Watchmen adaptations. In the original book she comes across as strong and fierce, but also vulnerable and insecure and I love love love her.
One of my favorites from a recent read was Rilla Blythe from Rilla of Ingleside. I "dnf"ed the book a few years ago, mostly because I didn't like Rilla herself. But I picked it up a couple months ago and pushed through this time and thank goodness. I love a story with good character growth, that's all I can say about it now! It's my main reason for loving Pride and Prejudice and Elizabeth too!

I'm currently reading the remnant chronicles and I'm really enjoying her character but I can't wait till we get to her character growth that I remember you talking about which is what inspired me to pick the series up.

The woman that inspire me- each woman in Little Woman. I love Jo for her ambition and drive for accomplishing things, Beth for her kindness, Meg for the care she has for her family and wanting what could be considered a simple life, I love Amy but she doesn’t inspire me as much, and I’m totally inspired by the mother (the way she raises her children in a time that didn’t really want to see them succeed)
I can't remember if I've recommended the Dagger and the Coin series by Daniel Abraham. The first book is "The Dragon's Path." Cithrin is so smart and driven,, I think you'll like her. Also, Marcus's friendship with (name I can't remember) is one you will appreciate. And Geder. During the course of the series I felt sorry for him, hated him, and so much more. Abraham writes incredible characters.

I love Lia too! I read the books when I was 15/16 and she made me feel so empowered. Usually ya protagonists are only considered strong if they can beat people up like man do and I hate it. That's why I love Lia, because her strength goes beyond fighting ability.
I'm currently reading Emma and my next Austen novel will now be Mansfield Park!

Thank you for recommending The Remnant Chronicles, Merphy. I had tried some YA books and I struggled with the genre, but this one I actually enjoyed. I also would like to thank you for inspiring me to read An unkindness of Magicians and Scott Lynch. Not the most fantastic literary works of all time, but completely enjoyable. I had a good time reading those.
Because of these books I'll forgive the Mistborn trilogy. You weren't the only one recommending those books, Daniel is equally to blame.

I loved Girl with Seven Names, love Spensa, Mrs. Weasley, Parvaneh from "Ove", all female characters in Ryiria Revelations, Dr. Edith Eger from The Choice, Eliza from the Indigo Girl, Rysn from Dawnshard... and when I read WoT as a young adult Egwene was my favourite and so inspiring to me! I think at that point in my life I needed a strong female character who went from nobody to somebody, and I definitely focused on that and overlooked a few offensive things she did. Slight spoilers-> Needless to say there was some book throwing when I read the last book!😭
I was one of the people who picked up The Sleeper and The Spindle and loved it :) Possibly for the same reasons. It's just SO GOOD to read a story with a truly competent female protagonist. She knows she's the queen and she owns it.
Inej Ghafa (Six of Crows), Marilyn Lee (Everything I Never Told You), Hermione and Molly (Harry Potter), Michelle Obama (Becoming and just in general) are the ones off the top of my head.
Inej Ghafa has to be one of the absolute best role models out there.
Karigan from the green rider series is my favourite because she is the definition of getting up after falling down as well as loyalty towards those around you comes in many forms . Just such an incredible character

Naruto is pretty similar to Spensa in a lot of ways. Feel free to try reading the first arc wich can be read as a standalone (or at least in the anime it is, haven't read the manga really).
I enjoyed naruto, but why would you bring that manga up in a video titled "women that inspired me?"
The female characters are written horribly bad, especially before shippuden - and the author even admitted that he just didnt have a clue what to do with sakura (and the others)

Lizzie Bennet has always been a favorite. Growing up I always loved Princess Cimorene (The Enchanted Forest Chronicles), Alanna (Song of the Lioness) and Sandry (The Circle of Magic). Then I got older and discovered Discworld, so now Granny Weatherwax and Tiffinay Aching are also added to that list
Every time you talk about Lia's strength I get reminded of Fire form the Greacling series. She is really inspiring as well. Just like Lia she makes some pretty though decisions to protect a kingdom she loves.
I have read three books that you mentioned here and I love all three of those women. I haven't read much Jane Austen, as in Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey, but I did prefer the former and I really enjoyed following Fanny as a character. I loved how unexpected Snow White was in The Sleeper and the Spindle, and I really liked her final decision of the book. And as for Mrs Darling, I really liked every scene she was in because of how she was characterised.
I'll be honest, I am not particular inspired by fictional characters, but there are some, mainly women, that I had a connection with for one reason or another. One that comes to mind is Miranda from Station Eleven, but I think it was also because I saw a lot of myself in her and how she went about life.

I’m planning on reading skyward soon. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I really like Sanderson’s female characters inn the books I’ve read so far, Warbreaker and Elantris.
Some of my favorite middle grade/ya characters are:
Annabeth chase, rachel dare, Hazel Lavec, and Reyna Ramirez Arellano. Ok, all of these are percy Jackson ones, but I couldn’t help myself. Reyna especially is one of my favorite characters of all time. She helped me realise some things about myself.
Also, I’m currently more than halfway through six of crows, and I’m loving the female characters there.
One of the women that has inspired me the most while growing up is Nasuada from the Inheritance Cycle. I know a lot of people complain about the writing and plot of the first book and abandon it but those series did a great job with the women and anybody gives it enough credit for this. Nasuada was my favourite and a big inspiration.
I love Fanny Price and she is often looked down on for being quiet. She is just as strong as Lizzy and I’m so happy that someone else sees that and loves her for it too.
The most inspiring literary woman for me has to be Solveig from Icefall by Matthew J. Kirby. In every book I’ve ever read, I’ve never related to a character as much. Her story helped me realize my potential, and sometimes I still think about the lessons I learned through her as a young adult. Crazy how fictional people can do that!

In addition to what I've seen in the comments (Hermione, Violet Baudelaire, etc) already, I'd like to add Valkyrie Cain and Tanith Low from the Skulduggery Pleasant series. As a boy, it was really great to grow up having such awesome and inspiring women to look up to alongside my male role models in fiction.
Even though they're from Visual Novels (with manga adaptations) rather than traditional novels, I also find Rika Furude (from Higurashi: When They Cry) and Ange Ushiromiya (from Umineko: When They Cry) to be some of the most inspiring women I've ever read about, managing to overcome the untold amounts of trauma and tragedy the author hurls at them while still remaining human and relatable.
I read Peter Pan as an adult, and even though I don't have children, I'm a teacher and I also really loved Mrs. Darling for similar reasons that you couldn't state here. :P
I think Starlight from "The Boys" should be worth a special mention. That show does a pretty good job of portraying the struggles that people, particularly women, have to face in celebrity culture and business corporations. I'm a man, but my heart really went out to her in all of it
I know you dont like the infernal devices (and tbh I agree with pretty much all of your criticisms) but Tessa was a character I absolutely loved and still to this day when I have to do something hard for me like give a speech or move away, I pretend I'm Tessa because I know she could take it and she was so strong. Might be a little weird but characters like that mean a lot to me

As a kid and teen, I loved Fantasy with female protagonists, like Sonea, Nihal or Katniss. A Natural History of Dragons also comes to mind and of course I adored Vin from Mistborn!
I am in the middle of a book with life stories of several women over 60 who are all somehow still very much engaged in their communities, each in her unique way and I find it so inspiring because they are just ordinary women and I really think there should be more biographies of ordinary people, it gives me a sense of "it could be you or me", we can all do our part, all of our lives are meaningful and we can inspire each other ❤️
Also it has very nice design and portraits of the women, it's a small publisher but it's in Czech so not likely that anyone here would actually read it I guess 😅
I have a lot of respect for Elizabeth Bennett. For the way she was not prepared to sacrifice her happiness even considering the precarious situation that she and her family were in. If I'd been in her place, I would have been much too frightened of the future to be that courageous. I'd have been like Charlotte Lucas.

Just a personal pet peeve of mine: I really don't like it when people are described as 'strong', which seems especially popular with female characters. The term feels vague to the point of being entirely meaningless
What does it mean when someone is strong? Does it mean physically strong? Aggressive? Resilient? Opinionated? Tough? Disagreeable? Combative? Resolute? Hard headed?
It feels to me that whenever a character is called 'strong' there is almost always another word that will more accurately capture their unique characteristics.
And, I also really don't like that it sets up the paradigm that implies that are strong and weak types of people. Everyone is has strengths that they have to cultivate and nurture. If someone refuses to accept weakness as a default state, that doesn't make them 'strong', it makes them 'normal'

A "strong" character is a bit of a ridiculous descriptor for a character male or female. I'd rather describe characters as "good" characters instead because it's just a better description
@@roserose109 I have to disagree. As much as I dislike 'strong' as a descriptor, 'good' is even worse. Usually the phrase 'a good character' just seems to mean "well written", which doesn't even say anything about the character itself. Well written evil characters are also "good characters".

Kylarra from Trading in Danger (book 1 of the Vatta series) by Elizabeth Moon
Scanning my shelf, I would include Mrs Darling, Mcgonagall, like 2/3rds of the women in the Cosmere. Non-fiction: Katie Davis Majors' Daring to Hope (follow up to Kisses from Katie).
When she said Misaki I had a mental image of Setsuko beaming and saying Merphy is someone who knows what's what.
The girl with seven names was a fantastic book. Well written, good pacing, couldn't put it down. I'm obsessed with survivor stories (mostly cult) and a lot of them are written by people who aren't authors so are a big difficult to get through. Not this one.
Harriet Tubman was the woman figure I was most fascinated by and am still fascinated by. I'm writing a book that is kind of similar to her own life, a type of underground railroad. I just finished the book titled "Harriet Tubman" by Catherine Clinton for research. It was a bit dry and oddly paced but a good read with some gems sprinkled throughout.
One of my absolute favourite characters is Keladry of Mindelan (Kel for short) from the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce. She’s awesome.

I recently reread Pheonix Unleashed by Grace Draven. And I really appreciated the main character Gilene as she struggled with her role and her power.

I was inspired a lot by sally jackson, Mary poppins, pippi longstocking,annabeth chase, Artemis, hestia, kiyoko, Athena, lily potter, molly weasely, and gannet mother from avialae, and Mulan from the original Disney movie and her grandmother, and many more wonderful women
I love hearing you talk about Fanny Price because of all the Austen women, I'm most like her which makes it awkward to hear people complaining about her. While I don't relate to every aspect of her personality and my life is much different, I understood her so deeply and felt understood in return. I loved the part about Fanny trying to decide whose chain to wear with her cross while not wanting to seem ungrateful to anyone but wanting to wear the one from her brother. It seems like most people would see that as a very small problem, but I felt her turmoil haha

Only thing is, I didn't really like Edmund. Sure, he was sweet to Fanny at times, but he also hurt her (and me) every time he forgot her because he was busy flirting with Mary Crawford. The only reason I was okay with Fanny and Edmund ending up together is that it was what Fanny wanted, and I wanted her to be happy for once lol
