Ohhhh! it's nostalgic. I had a stick that it's red button was on the base, after a while my father got an Helicopter shape stick for my birthday, I was surprised. I love those days. It was my world, small, innocent, but full of joy.
it looks boring by today's standards but it was really fun to play, especially because you could speed up and slow down, giving you a lot of control and potential to build skill, unlike most games made by atari itself. The Activision guys were probably some of Atari's best game designers and left disgruntled to start their own company, resulting in some of the best Atari games ever made.

I remember playing this game with my great aunt in Alabama when I was a little kid. We drove down from Michigan for my grandmother’s funeral. First time I met that side of my family. It’s burned into my memory.
I'm living a very small town by the countryside in Brazil (about just 8k people). Its not my hometown, but I been here for some years now and, as days go by, I'm meeting and getting to know its funny characters. There is a unusual case here of a old man (he's 75 now) who *love* videogames. He used to play with his son (who passed more than a decade ago) and always been a vicious player, hahahah. Not exactly an aficionado, he just had a few consoles (an Atari, a Super Nes and a Ps1), but played the hell out of each one. Today he still into games, but plays mostly just little mobile stuff. Told me about this one today and I had to check it out. His eyes shine when he speaks about it... a 75 year old man, shining like a kid with its videogames. A beautiful sight ❤ Ps: I hope we can all be like that in the future.
This game does indeed have a ending. It was the very first video game i ever beat. i love this game to this day! river raid and phoenix were my fav atari games!
I haven’t played this game for about 35 years now but I remember exactly first five levels of the game along with the moves I came up with playing this hundreds of times 😂
It always surprises me when I see atari games in color. When I was a kid, I only ever played atari at my great grandpa's house or at the neighbor's house across the street. In both cases, the atari was hooked up to an old black and white television with rabbit ears. So for several decades until I looked up atari gameplay footage on youtube I had just assumed the atari didn't even support color, like with the original gameboy.
Legendary game... Can't forget those days when my elder brothers used to play this... Even today I can't consider any fighter plane game equivalent to this...
Justo hoy me compré el Atari 50 aniversario para PlayStation 5 y por desgracia este juego de River Raid no aparece y yo lo considero si no el primero, el segundo mejor juego de Atari.
oh wow i used to play this when i was a kid and it was old back then...but i could not remember the name until i came across an amazon link for an atari flashback console....this title was on the cover and i found this video. this is it!! I used to love this game!

I remember the day my brother brought home river raid and air raid. Back in the 80s our parents didn't buy us magazines so the only way we found out about new games was at the school playground or on the few TV shows that covered gaming. The first time I saw river raid I was overwhelmed by how smooth the graphics were. Obviously it's a bit crap today but back then it was such a fun game to play.
I wasted so much time playing Atari 2600. This brings me back to a time when I was a teen and my life was filled with drama. But games like this shut out the whole world. As well as heavy metal music. Still love my childhood even though it was hard...wouldn't change it for anything...
thank you! this brings back memories...haahh...i was so into this game and quite good at it...i think this was the best atari game that time..it was so addictive
Yes. I reached the level and got one of those patches. I think it took more than 30 minutes to reach it. If you remember you could not "pause" in this game. By the time I was done I was drained!
This was the greatest game ever , in late 80s in Afghanistan 🇦🇫, Kabul before the war started , I used to ride a bike with few of my friends for 4 km and pay 20 rupee for this game To play , and after months of practice , the longer we played , we had to keep paying 20 extra rupee , what a game
I still have this game two of them actually. I still own an Atari 2600 and I just recently got my Atari upgraded to modern day standards. In other words I took it apart cleaned the inside of the Atari up soldered back in the transistor and got rid of the old VHF cable connection and replaced it with a red yellow and white cord for my flat screen TV. Now I can plug it into any modern TV as long as it has video 1 or video 2. Although the picture isn’t great it’s still pretty good. Which I might have to adjust the tinting and color and contrast. but I think that’s because it’s a flat screen TV. I think if I get myself a small tube television set with the red yellow and white connection probably get a better quality of picture.
It’s funny, I haven’t played or seen this game in 40 years, but I still know those first few levels by heart, I played it so much. Wasn’t there a deal that if you made it to 100,000 points, you could take a pic of your tv, mail it in and get a certificate or something? I never made it…
This in the day was like space invader on steroids. A stunning game although i always found it quite hard as a child. I'm still a noob even 36 years later :)
My River Raid story is about how I traveled to Florida from Canada, visited a Toys R Us, and made some kid bring out a ladder from the back of the store to literally climb 20 feet to get this game off their ridiculously high shelving. The poor guy risked his neck so I could play an 8-bit POS game, that was the bomb when it came out. I was 11 years old.
