@Techinsomnia, nice vid, Mr Mackintosh tutorial you linked is amazing, the level of detail whilst initially seeming ovewhelming, helps to update the iMac confidentally, first time I watched it I was staggered, gthen after a couple of run throughs I updated smoothly.

I picked up a 2011 with a 7200rpm 1TB drive and 8GB RAM running High Sierra. It was a little slow and I could hear the HDD grinding away. I just installed a 500GB Samsung SSD and the difference is incredible. So much quicker booting and opening and managing the apps I use (Outlook, Teams, browsers...). I have another 8GB RAM on the way too. Very impressed with this machine.
Nice video. I just recently got an early 2009 iMac 20inch & mid 2011 iMac 21.5 inch for $52 package deal. They both had 8gb of ram. 2009 iMac all work with original hard drive but user account password block. So I replaced hard hard with a 120gb SSD that I had lying around. Installed Linux mint mate work out of the box except Wi-Fi. Sound I plugged in the Ethernet cable and got all my drivers from the software center in mint. I tried a bunch of different distro, and this on seem like the best one that works. Plays 720p TH-cam video pretty good. 2011 iMac no hard drive and dvd drive doesn’t work. I took out of the dvd drive. I installed 500gb SSD I had laying around. I installed Zorin OS Pro. It works right out of the box with no problems. Plays 1080p TH-cam video.
Thank you my friend and thank you for sharing your upgrade info and experience with all of us. 2011 iMac is one of my favourites but this comment makes me want to maybe give the 2009 a try and see if I can upgrade it and make a still good video on it as well. Appreciate your comment and support my friend. 🙏🙏
I upgraded my late 2009 21.5-inch iMac with an SSD, more RAM, and a new CPU, and also installed OCLP macOS Ventura. It feels so cool and pretty much like it's brand new, so I don't need to buy a new one.
I felt the same way when I did this one and a few more after. These machines love Samsung SSD’s and can really be surprisingly stable on one. 💯 Glad to hear you’re up and running well and thank you for your comment my friend. 🙏
@@TechInsomnia Thanks for sharing your experience! It's good to know that Samsung SSDs work well with these machines. Stability is definitely a plus. I'm really pleased with how everything is running now. Appreciate your support and feedback, my friend!
For the record, without any modification you can officially from apple upgrade all the way to High Sierra, this mac is still surprisingly running the OS from when it was brand new, it was never upgraded.
I have the big 2011 27 inch iMac working now, and man it's still a fast computer even to this day. It held up soo well with such a beautiful 1440p display panel which looks flawless almost 12 years later. It's a fast computer with a new SSD and 16 GB of RAM. It can still keep up with web browsing and video playback and even some light video editing whenever I want to. Overall, performance on this is really good for the fact that it's a computer from 2011. It currently has an i5-2400, 512GB SSD, and 16 GB DDR3 The Optical Drive can be replaced with another ssd or hdd but mine still has the optical drive.
🔥🔥🔥 The i5-2400 was one of my favorites! 💙 You're so right my friend. It's crazy how good a 2011 iMac can really still be. 💯 1440p for 2011 was leading edge at the time in my option. What brand/model of SSD are you running?
Hey, do You think that i7 27" 2011iMac with 16gb ram and 256ssd would be able to do that kind of workload? It also has AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2gb and is running sequoia. I found it on marketplace for around 150usd. So i was wondering if that is usable and good purchase for my parents for web browsing and youtube purpouses. Thanks in advance.
I have this same computer but have updated to 20 gb RAM. I am going to do the same hard drive update to run a newer OS. My MID 2011 is maxed out at High Sierra.
First when you were testing the machine pre upgrades the slowness and lacking was probably caused by lack of RAM. I think nowadays you need 16GB to be able to run all web content and multiple windows smoothly. Until last year I was quite happily using iMac 27 late 2009 with i5, 32GB RAM and SSD. Then I ran into couple of iMac 27 mid 2011's (i5 and i7) and they were sold as pair and were very cheap. I bought them and took the i7 -model to my daily computer. Its fast enough (i7-2600 3.4GHz + 6970M 2GB GPU) and I upgraded it to 32GB RAM and added 2TB Samsung SSD. Its a great machine and runs perfectly in all of my work. I get zero dropped frames in TH-cam playing 1080P content. Because I want to upgrade past High Sierra I will next upgrade the GPU to one that supports newer OS's properly (with Metal support). I also kept the i5 as a backup machine. I will probably update it too so its ready for any use I might need it for.
Excellent! Love those machines my friend. 😃 You are right about the RAM. 💯 Have you tried OCLP on you 2011? Very curious as to how it would run on your 2009. i7-2600 is still a monster in my opinion. For the price point that you can get one today, the value is definitely still there. 💯
I like your approach to recycling tech and saving money. Its very satisfying to hear about those kind of things. I just bought a 2014 mac mini to replace my windows machine that died. I feel like apple stuff is made well so it will last a lot longer with community support. Windows stuff just seems to die every 4 years if im lucky id get 6 years out of something. If this mac mini does most of what i need then ill just buy a mac mini every so often and save money as opposed to buying 1500 dollar windows machines every 3-6 years.
@@DoodMang7 Yeah, I agree. Now I am running OCLP + Monterey in that 2011 iMac 27" i7. I can do everything I need do with it and it does not feel slow or old in any way. And its now almost 13 years old. I do have other and even newer Macs too but this is my main daily computer I use 95% of the time for business and private things.
Just upgraded my 2011 iMach 27 inch to Ventura using OpenCore Legacy Patcher. It runs flawlessly. It's got SSD and 32GB RAM. A few years back it spent about 3 years gathering dust in my garage because it killed the graphics card and Apple wanted £700 and practically told me to bin it and buy a new one. I decided to buy a new 2GB graphics card for it from China and fitted it in myself, and the machine is great now. The camera also stopped working and I've replaced it with a used one from eBay. So I'm very happy. The only thing that has stopped working is external monitor via the thunderbolt port. It just won't recognise any external screen anymore😢
Excellent fixes and excellent attitude my friend. 💪 These computers are tanks and they can really go the distance if cared for and maintained. 32GB RAM on an SSD is killer! 💯 I have noticed that the newest OCLP 1.4.3 on Sonoma 14.4.1 is faster than Ventura 13.66 on two different machines I've done in the past 3 days. Might be worth the upgrade/update. 🤞
@@ricardoresende1658 do some search here on TH-cam to see video on how to upgrade GPU. Also, make sure to buy a new one and not used to make sure it will last. I made a mistake of buying used one and it died within a few months. Then I bought a new one with 2GB memory from China for about $200. Good luck. By the way I'm also running Sonoma on my 2011 now and it works great!!
@@TechInsomnia ive installed first monterey, then the ventura update came up, and installed it, it just works fine and smooth, no problems at all (did it with the opencore legacay patcher) ;-)
@@FelixBruin are you using the original GPU? I have the AMD 6770 512MB and wonder if I need to upgrade it first to a metal one. I also have 32GB RAM installed, but still on a 1TB HDD.
Quite possibly the BEST iMacs ever made. Even though it's prone to GPU Failures on the 27 and 21.5 inch iMac, they have an upgradable GPU. I do have a Mid 2011 iMac 27 inch from a recycle center that I'm restoring. These can be good for most people who like macOS and does basic web browsing, or maybe even light editing. Sandy bridge is still capable to this day.
Couldn't agree more and you said it perfectly! Great for people who like macOS and use the computer for web browsing mostly which in my clientele and experience, is most people in general these days. 🙏 I'm going to likely try to get one for myself in the near future and upgrade it to the max! 😃 GREAT MACHINES! 🔥
I agree, this was peak Apple. It seems like they had no competition back then. What other machines are still viable after 11 years? I run 50-100 Chrome tabs all the time and it doesn't care lol. The Magic Mouse, the Wireless Keyboard, the nice big 2k display, heck even the built-in speakers are perfectly fine. I think these iMacs are so timeless. Even though I have an M1 Air, I'm so hesitant to let my 2011 27" iMac go. I think it provides way better value than the price it sells for.
Smart and well said. I agree and personally I would keep it forever my friend. Even as a secondary on the corner of your desk. Beautiful screen and always useful in a pinch. I know a few people that have this exact same year iMac and use it as a streaming computer to have something on in the background while they work and I can function for this purpose even without the upgrade. Thank you for your comment and support. 🙏@@Razertw
Although I've since purchased the M1 variants of the Powerbook Pro and Mac Mini I still have my iMac 21.5" mid 2011 with the Radeon HD 6770M graphics and I upgraded the ram to 16 GB and the internal harddrive with a 4TB Western Digital Red Pro. Those last two specs are (by the numbers) better than the two newer machines I upgraded to. For what I need it to do it's fine. It's been relegated to the basement when I'm in my man cave and need to get on and do some work without having to go up to the second floor where the other computers are (Wife pretty much uses/"owns" the Powerbook Pro so when she says "you only need one" fellas always buy two). Infact I'm watching and commenting on the video on the old iMac right now.
2024 here got sequoia on a 32gb ram 1 tb SSD and 2400k, all good bit sluggish but only a bit still great for everyday use mine is a media center on my bed. but considering upgrading GPU and CPU upgrade to max it out and get rid of the sluggishness.
I upgraded my 2010 iMac with i7 860s 1tssd and gpu k2000M running Big Sur smoothly just bought me a the 2011 iMac 27 inch gonna upgraded that with the i7 2600 because it supports ave 1tssd and gpu k2000M as well these iMacs are great and still have life thanks to open core!
Only downside is slow usb 2.0 ports and useless thunderbolt 1.0 ports. I upgraded to ssd and 16 ram. I have kept high sierra because some apps did not work or had problems with more recent o/s . Otherwise happy with my original 27 inch mid-2011 iMac.
I still use a 27 inch mid 2011 imac as my main machine. with maxed out RAM (32 GB), and a core i7 2600 (the MAX CPU), it runs OS ventura quite well. I have more powerful machines I use for things that need more power for, but for everyday use such as browsing, work, videos and other everyday use, I prefer this machine.
@@TechInsomnia I have only been using it about 2 months, but I have not had a single issue with anything. Only issue I know of is that if you put it to sleep, it sometimes won’t recognize your keyboard when it wakes back up, but I never put it to sleep, so it hasn’t been an issue for me.
Thank you for your response and the info my friend. Wireless or wired keyboard? Also can you check if you have any new Post-Install Patches available? Sometimes there can be a fix in there for all kinds of things. You may need to install the newest OCLP but won't need to reformat or anything in order to do so. 🙏
@@TechInsomnia It is a USB keyboard, I don't have the wireless one, so I don't know how it would act. I just installed it less than a month ago, so I don't think there would be a fix, but there might.
A SSD 256 makes it runs twice as fast, a real difference. You can prolong the use for a few more years. But mine is going out..... getting a M1 (or maybe M3). I maxed out the ram also to 12GB.
Beautiful machine! Couldn't agree more but try to go Samsung SSD only because they are just more compatible with Mac's in general at least in my experience over the years. 🙏 You will be happy with your M1 with 12GB or more my friend. That thing will FLY! 💯
That legacy patcher is a gift from heaven. I'd be interested in seeing one of these with a top spec i7 and AMD W6700 upgrade. I'd do it to mine, but I can't find the parts :(
I did everything with you, so TH-cam directly said update and had options that I couldn't get to work, but Google freestyle and pull the TH-cam that way worked, and allowed me to sign in, so strange but whatever- after this song I'll continue with the video and doing everything with him
have 2 of them since people was just giving these things away on Ebay for less than $100 but yeah last fully upgradable iMac so you can really put together a very Powerful Machine for cheap if you know what you're doing. People are shocked actually how fast the ones I upgraded are and wonder how the hell do I have OS Ventura on a 2011 iMac 🤣 Good Video!
Thank you my friend! Look up OCLP on TH-cam. There is a channel made by Mr. Mackintosh and he has great videos that will walk you through the process. 💯 It can seem daunting but if you can follow step by step, it's easier than it looks. 🙏 Hope this helps 🤞
I just bought the iMac (i3 processor) from 2011. I was wondering where do I find the ssd to do what you did to yours? I’m not the savvy tech guy but I bought it for my wife for school and was just wondering on how to update
Thank you for your comment my friend. 🙏 I would only go with Samsung SSD’s for these computers because of compatibility but if it’s just the software you’d like to update I have a video on my channel that will show you how to do it using OCLP. All you need is the computer, a usb key and an internet connection. If you’re in the GTA in Canada, I can do the hardware and software upgrade for you. 💯 Hope this helps my friend. 🤞
No. It doesn’t work like that unfortunately. Apple won’t officially support this computer again unfortunately because deep down, they don’t want you to use this computer. They want you to buy a new one. 🙏
@@TechInsomnia recently I found an iMac in a dumpster, A1312 27". Not sure if it totally works. Did a short test on it - no keyboard / mouse connected. Got to the🍏 loading icon image then two alternating icons popped up. The seem to be directing the user to put a switch in an different position. But I can't find that switch. Any ideas? I am not sure what iOS version is installed, or if it can be upgraded to the next (for it, it would be maybe one more version up) version. Think the iMac is from 2010 - 2012.
@@TechInsomnia I was looking on eBay to see how much the A1312 (used) was selling for, & checked one seller, & they were including a keyboard & mouse. AMMMMAZZZZING🙌🏼🔥 I have late 2012 imac 27" wich is not upgradable gpu But Im thinking about buying 2011 27" just im not sure if i could upgrade it to 8gb firepro gpu without any problems Is it possible to buy a "plug & play" gpu from ali with ready vbios and heatpipe for 2011 27" imac?
That’s a really good question my friend. I’ll have to look into that one for you. Personally I’ve never seen or heard of it being done but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. 💯
Awesome vid, thanks for sharing man!👍🏻 I would like to know if this is doable on a 27" imac mid 2011 with the GPU AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024Mb? 16Gb ram, intel 3,4 GHz i7, running high sierra. Appreciate it, many thanks!
I'm not sure and I don't want to point you in the wrong direction or give you wrong information. There is a site called everymac. You can put in your serial number and select your exact machine and there will be documentation on what cards have been confirmed working successful upgrades as well as RAM (speed & Amount) and macOS versions (supported). Hope this helps my friend. 🙏
Yes! as long as u upgrade the GPU buy an nvidia quadro series mxm, i have one working flawlessly for years bud! loads of YT videos with tuts explaining how to do the swap
i've got a similar imac 2011 (pretty much the same, just 1tb hdd and 2.7ghz i5), do you think i would be fine to attempt to upgrade it to monterey, or even just mojave? i want to get newer versions of logic pro, (its on high sierra currently), but i don't know if this will sacrifice performance or somehow break things. any ideas?
I would highly recommend an SSD before any software upgrade my friend. That will give you the right hardware to support macOS Monterey or Ventura via OCLP. There are good video online on how to do both but it’s always a good idea to consult a professional if you aren’t sure you can perform the SSD upgrade. Better safe than sorry my friend. 🙏
@@TechInsomnia Thanks! I did end up upgrading despite not having an SSD. The performance was fine, a little slow, but the main issue was the playhead being missing in Logic Pro X due to graphical issues. I ended up going back to High Sierra, but it was cool to try it out. Great video might I add
Not that I noticed. You can use a free program online called "Mac Stats" to keep any eye on your internal temperatures and which processes are using the most CPU and RAM. Hope this helps my friend. 🙏
Yes it does. Only consistent thing that seems to be hard to get working is the Maps and on the rare occasion on certain models, Airdrop doesn't work. Other than that, smooth sailing. 💯
RAM would be a cheaper more noticeable upgrade depending on what you're using the computer for. The best upgrade would be a good quality Samsung SSD tho. 💯
It's still a decent machine, heads up be careful when putting the screen back , the display cable is very fragile and it can bend really easy and you won't get no display on the screen
@@skelobonesmacOS 13 will last you a while with its features regardless. For a decade+ aged computer, to be working now and potentially well in future couple years is great!

I had a question did you have any problems with your SSD because it is a Chinese brand not very expensive but I am always wary of it is Brands?
im getting an 8gb 27'' model for my mom for $140 CAD. Cant go wrong there. It will blow her PC out of the water to be sure for basic video watching on that big beauty 2k screen.
The only version that I’ve tested on these computers which is fast, portable and stable as hell, is WinPE on a Samsung or Adata Pro USB key. Ridiculously fast. ⚡️💯💥🙏
if i change the hard drive , do i need to install something on the new ssdm or i just simply put the new one on , im planing to change the hard drive but i dont know if it will work. cause right now the imac is not booting up ,or entering recovery mode..
You will need to reinstall a macOS on a new SSD my friend. When you say isn't booting up, does the screen display anything like a folder with a question mark in it or no display at all?
I have the 27 inch i5 2011 with 32 gigs and I am running big sir. It runs better on Big Sur than it did on Monterey that’s what I did for me and it is running 11.7.1 or 11.7.2 soon or later I will have to upgrade it to Monterey but for now, Big Sur is where it’s going to be at. The hard drive that I have a in it is a 2 TB. I would want somebody to put in a solid-state 2 TB hard drive I know how to do it but I don’t wanna break anything so I’m a leave the 2 TB mechanical hard drive in it and use what I got for now.
Sometimes the safe route is the best route my friend 🙏 If you're in Toronto by any chance I might be able to help you out. 💯 I'm sure with 32GB of RAM you are moving along quite nicely even on an HDD. Two ways that could be affecting speed with your drive is age and if it's a 5400RPM rather than a 7200RPM. If you notice a decrease in speed over time I would check the amount of hours on your 2TB. anything over 20,000 hrs and a swap to SSD may be just what the doctor ordered. 💪
Does it run better than High Sierra? I don't know if I should go with the (officially) unsupported OS, right now everything works fine and is pretty well optimized. Some things are even better in High Sierra than on my M1's Ventura...
Real world test using neural filters on Photoshop 2023, and you'll see some serious slowdown. In genefral use it performs fine, decent screen as well, 2011 27" 24gb ram 256 ssd, running Monterey on an external 256 ssd.
Strange. Sound was working perfectly on the one I tested in this video. What version of OCLP are you running? Try updating the the newest version which I think is OCLP 0.5.2 right now. Also, make sure you "Post-Install Patches" are installed afterwards and once complete, re-install OCLP to main disk and deselect "Boot-Picker" option. Let me know how it goes my friend.
@@TechInsomnia @4l3xx2011 , If anyone wants to install monterey with the latest OCLP then beware because your MAC then may not have a built-in speaker to use. To avoid this install an older version.(I installed OCLP(0.4.10) on my iMac 2011 everything works. :D
@@TechInsomnia I've installed previous release of oclp, and problem with sound was solved. Actually they fixed it in newest release also. But finally I ve installed official High Sierra, because of airplay problems and power management. If its going to be fixed, then I will try it. Thanks.
It’s a clients machine so I don’t have it anymore but I remember a fix that was mentioned for Metal Acceleration or the GPU related Metal something. I remember checking and that patch is included in the installer. It’s a complex process and there are a lot of steps. I can send you the link for it and you can watch the entire thing. I remember Mr. Macintosh mentioning that if you can see the transparent menu and text insert column, the patch was applied successfully.
@@TechInsomnia bruh. To be honest get one of those NVIdia Quodro cards. They are a bit pricy but the can slot in inside the thick imacs. Those cards already have metal support.
I would have loved to see you create the video for this on iMovie running on this upgraded 2011 iMac to see how well it rendered 4k video. That to me is a real benchmark. However, I know what it takes to make videos, and I can see you put in the effort on this one. You definitely earned a like.
thanks so much! im thinking of getting an imac on ebay from 2011 which doesn't have an OS installed, do you think i'd be able to download an OS via wifi or do i need a flashdrive? and def will upgrade it :)
Pleasure! You can try WiFi in recovery mode but most times it doesn't work. At least for me over the years. There are date commands to change the date to the appropriate date depending on what macOS you're installing. You can find them and the commands for them easy on Google. You can use another Mac to make a key pretty easily if you have access to one with a preinstalled OS on it. When you update using OCLP make sure to use the machine you will be installing it on to make the installation key. Very important because OCLP will read the specs and exact requirements for your specific machine in order to create the install key so that it's fully compatible. 💯 Hope this helped and good luck my friend! 🙏

The Optical Drive can be replaced with another ssd or hdd but mine still has the optical drive.

Hi, tnx for your video.I s this Mac with AMD grafic card? Do you put the thermal sensor on SSD? Or is it not necessary?
Nice video! Thanks bro💯
Got one of these for free, with magic mouse and keyboard. Updated Ram to 16gb and installed Kubuntu, as good as new.
Excellent! 💪Original HDD or did you upgrade to SSD as well my friend?
@@TechInsomnia Still rocking the HDD but I can see an SSD in the future.
@@tyhja7578 attaboi! 💪 will be a very noticeable difference my friend 💯

🙏@@Razertw
Gpu upgarde 4gb nvidia+metal £150 but its really good
Although I've since purchased the M1 variants of the Powerbook Pro and Mac Mini I still have my iMac 21.5" mid 2011 with the Radeon HD 6770M graphics and I upgraded the ram to 16 GB and the internal harddrive with a 4TB Western Digital Red Pro.
Great specs and thank you for your comment my friend. 🙏 "Always get two" 😅 You said it brother 💯💯💯💥

Make sure you get the i7 2600S, not the base 2600 cpu. I don’t think the stock psu can handle the higher wattage.
Beste Option , Linux Mint 👍 Modern ,Fast , Perfekt for Older Macs
I still use a 27 inch mid 2011 imac as my main machine. with maxed out RAM (32 GB), and a core i7 2600 (the MAX CPU), it runs OS ventura quite well. I have more powerful machines I use for things that need more power for, but for everyday use such as browsing, work, videos and other everyday use, I prefer this machine.
Incredible! I feel the same way and I want to get one for myself for the exact same purpose. 💯 Do you find it stable on Ventura?

@@TechInsomnia bruh. To be honest get one of those NVIdia Quodro cards. They are a bit pricy but the can slot in inside the thick imacs. Those cards already have metal support.
@@janrynkevic377 Good to know. Thanks. This computer turned out solid tho. No issues. GPU strong! 💪
I would have loved to see you create the video for this on iMovie running on this upgraded 2011 iMac to see how well it rendered 4k video. That to me is a real benchmark. However, I know what it takes to make videos, and I can see you put in the effort on this one. You definitely earned a like.
Thank you my friend! 😃 Appreciate your comment. 🙏 Totally agree! Definitely something to consider for the next one. 💯
0.19 how can i get this 3D menu bar
Install post-install patches in OCLP my friend 🙏

Ok what about a how to upgrade video bro lol
made a hackintosh
installed a virus
high sierra is the best option
no, high sierra has very many security vulnerabilities and monterey or ventura can run just fine on one of these macs.
it's really not, and thats on you.
I am watching this on my 2011 iMac LoL
💪
This iMac is 12 years old
So?
Not called a solid state hard drive. SSD is solid statue drive. Not sshd
thanks so much! im thinking of getting an imac on ebay from 2011 which doesn't have an OS installed, do you think i'd be able to download an OS via wifi or do i need a flashdrive? and def will upgrade it :)
@@TechInsomnia thank you! :)
