Everything goes up a notch when AHA play live they always give 110% to their performances. I’ve seen then 4 times 1986, 1988, the 90’s in Birmingham, England the first two in Scotland and their farewell tour in Scotland.

For me, this is THE best live recording session from them. Have seen them live 5 times (first in 2003 and last in 2018) - I love it that they can change it up. They have been brilliant every single time and for me they are the most fantastic live band. Don't think I've heard them do Manhattan Skyline like this, though... however, thanks for your a-ha reactions, love seeing people reacting to things other than Take On Me.

I’m booked to go and see them with my teenage kids in concert in may in the UK. Can’t wait. I’m 52 years old and never seen them live. And I love that my kids love them. My heart soars how happy you are when you listen to them ❤️❤️

I’ve seen them three times in the last 21 years. Morten is still awesome in the vocals and his range is still very good. They are an awesome liveband and their catalogue is hard to beat. I wish you a nice concert😉

Pretty unusual 3/4 beat. You don’t hear that too often in rock songs. It’s almost like the part where it breaks into the rocking beat, that the frustration of having her leave when he is falling in love with her becomes apparent. Beautiful harmonies as always too. Thanks again Mike!

Hello ! Great Comment to my all time Favorite a-ha Song. And "live at NRK 1991" in these Studio Live-Version was a BIG one. If you take a third time Reaction of "Manhattan Skyline" , than take "Live in Rio" de Janeiro with the Record Breaking Audience in Front of 198.000 Fans also in 1991. I like your Reaction, because you like it really.......Applaus for YOU and A-HA ;-)!!! More Live Version Reaction please, because these Norwegian Heros played Live very cool...

So, concerning the instrumental section of Manhattan Skyline, they only did it during the 80s and the 90s. The 80s had a more synth heavy feel to it while the 90s had this more rocky vibe to it. However, during their 93-94 tour, a-ha decided to play in a more heavy key than the 91 tour. The chorus of Manhattan Skyline had also changed in 1994 with less synths to it.
Now in the early 2000s, a-ha phased out the instrumental section and Manhattan Skyline was played at a closer bpm to the studio version but this time with an alternative rock facelift. In the 2005s, a-ha now played Manhattan Skyline with a rythm and lead guitarist.
Finally the end of a decade. It's 2010 and a-ha decides to finally disband. Manhattan Skyline is now played as close as possible to the tune of the studio version. Morten now has a little special tool for the chorus.
After a-ha decided to come back in 2015, MTV unplugged invited them in 2016 to play live. Manhattan Skyline is once again revamped and this one it has been given the royal treatment and played orchestrally. Since then a-ha plays that song like so and the only change they have made is reusing the electric guitar in 2018.
I shall attach the links to the different versions of manhattan skyline from the different eras below.
1980s: Live in Japan, 1987. Check the description for Manhattan Skyline timestamp.
    th-cam.com/video/HKeGwrLN1Lw/w-d-xo.html
1991: This one is a live from Luna Park, Argentina. This VHS transfer does not have the same clarity as the NRK live but it is still an excellent live with an instrumental section which could be better than the NRK live.
    th-cam.com/video/xc62LREQJM4/w-d-xo.html
1994: Live in Johannesburg. A much darker and brooding a-ha.
    th-cam.com/video/j3g5g0IgAF4/w-d-xo.html
2000:Live in Norway, the beginning of a new a-ha.
    th-cam.com/video/4FS-6HDcV-s/w-d-xo.html
2005:Live in Norway, the integration of 2 guitarists.
    th-cam.com/video/YpxMe32PBQI/w-d-xo.html
2010: Farewell concert in Norway. Morten has a new toy.
    th-cam.com/video/WTy0tlYuCaQ/w-d-xo.html
    2016: MTV Unplugged.
    th-cam.com/video/6le6vL5cPJc/w-d-xo.html
2018: Say hello to the electric guitar again.
    th-cam.com/video/Xb6A45TTKTg/w-d-xo.html
Vocally speaking, Morten had a choir boy-ish voice in the 80s and reached his prime in the 90s with 1994 having his huskiest voice. They also apparently had their most rock and roll performance in a certain concert in 1994 but there does not seem to be any bootleg recordings existing of it. Throughout their career though, a-ha managed to reinvent themselves and capture the interest of a wide array of music enthusiasts from pop to rock, metal to classical, and that's what makes them more or less special.

Sadly Mike they don’t play this version live any more. So much of their live sets in a-ha version 2.0 since they reconvened in 2000 following their 90s hiatus feature pre programmed synth backing which hinders a lot of riffing, jamming and ad libbing on Paul and Magne’s part. But clearly this can suit other less rock orientated songs better.
The best live versions of their rockier catalogue are definitely from the 91 and lesser known 94 tours - if you liked this and want a guitar solo (albeit I know Mark thinks it’s a little over the top 😂) check out The Swing of Things Live in Oslo from the Memorial Beach Deluxe album. Great vocals too. One of the better synth to rockier live crossovers. 🤞🤞🤞
Love your a-ha reactions as always.
You should maybe also do a double of “Velvet” - firstly Paul’s original heavier pure version from his Savoy side project and then the watered down but still sublime a-ha version from Minor Earth Major Sky album.

Hi Mike! If you ever wanted to continue with the rock vib songs, i suggest The Swing of Things live ( some choices of live version have already been proposed by other fans), Slender Frame and How Sweet it Was. For a special, hypnotic and real dark one, Lamb to the Slaughter ( studio version). 😉🎶

They added a date?! I’m gonna have to check that out because last time I checked they were all sold out:( I prolly couldn’t do New York but I could drive 8 hours to CA… Fun to see you react to a song you already knew! You can do the reverse now with the album version of Sycamore Leaves:) I’ll continue to suggest Minor Earth Major Sky and Lifelines for a couple post-hiatus suggestions. For pre-hiatus, try Soft Rains of April, Locust, Living a Boy’s Adventure Tale, Weight of the Wind, and maybe Lie Down in Darkness? Looking forward to more!
