- UPDATED VIDEO 2020: • Free-to-Play, Preferre... -- There are three different ways to play Star Wars: The Old Republic when it comes to subscribing to the game: free to play, preferred, and subscribed. This video covers the differences between the three ways, what you can and can't do as a free-to-play player or preferred player, what unlocks you should get if you are downgrading to preferred and what types of activities you can do as a preferred player.

EXTRA PREFERRED PLAYER SUGGESTION
Preferred players should really take advantage of their non-paying time to do some of the free, but time-intensive achievements including:
- DATACRON MASTER achievement (datacron hunting)
- LOREMASTER achievement (lore objects)
- BEASTMASTER achievement (enemy hunting)
- GALACTIC EXPLORER achievement (map exploring)
- GALACTIC HERO (do every heroic once)
- BIG GAME HUNTER (world bosses)
You should also focus on TRADING if you are interested in getting higher-tier items. Find a friend who has credits get them to buy the item for you, then trade them your hoarded rare items or rare materials you can get from conquests or warzone weeklies. Before you go preferred start stocking up on tradeable items :)

UNLOCKS FOR PREFERRED PLAYERS
- AUTHORIZATION: ARTIFACT EQUIPMENT so you can wear purple artifact gear
- CUSTOMIZATION CONTROL: DISPLAY CHARACTER TITLES - which allows you to show or hide your title
- CUSTOMIZATION CONTROL: DISPLAY LEGACY NAME AND TITLES which allows you to show or hide your legacy titles
- CUSTOMIZATION CONTROL: UNIFY COLORS which allows you to color-match your outfits
- CUSTOMIZATION CONTROL: HIDE HEAD SLOT so you can show or hide your helmet
- ADDITIONAL CHARACTER SLOTs for your many alts, but hold on to them before you come preferred so you can see exactly how many you need - there have been many promotions that included a free character slot. Otherwise some of your extra characters of your choice will be locked out and un-playable while you are preferred.
- 2 UNLOCK: ADDITIONAL QUICKBAR unlocks, since preferred players get 4 out of the 6 subscribers get
- UNLOCK: CREW SKILL SLOT, since preferred players get 2 out of the 3 crafting slots subscribers get
- UNLOCK: GUILD BANK ACCESS, which you will be locked out of as a preferred player. Preferred players are 100% locked out of guild credits, even with this unlock.
- Outfit designer slots, bank tabs and legacy bank tabs, as some of these unlocks revert to being unlockable only with cartel coins as a preferred player

I think the SWTOR store is the most confusing I've seen in an MMO yet, as is the benefits and limitations between F2P and preferred. Great video.

As a preferred player, you are able to use: Unify Colors, Character Titles, and the 2 Crafting slots. The rest is very accurate. This game is unique for having the "demo" the "full" and the "thanks for paying" versions. I actually played F2P for about 3 years, and i'll admit, it was tolerable. I managed to find ways around a lot of the restrictions (which is easy when all a really cared about was the story) but it taught me to work hard and do EVERY side mission, EVERY weekly war zone mission, and MANY MANY other EXP grinds. I've since become preferred and a LOT of those minor nuisances are gone. Awesome video!
15$ unlocks all the current expansions and you still hold onto them even after your sub ends? That sounds like utopia!
However the credit cap for preferred players is kinda bummer but the expansion aspect is very, *very* good.
Yeah the expansion deal is great. If all you want to do is play the story and don't care about much else it's perfect.

Probably a point worth noting is that if you use a referal link (use the one in Swtorista's video description for supporting her ;) ) as a prefered status player you will get some of the unlocks (crew-ability-slot; unify colors; show title and maybe even more) meaning you wont have to waste cartel coins on that

I agree they are stressful, it's the reason I have mine on "re-occurring" instead of buying the cheaper ones for 3-6 months at a time. I think the reason it's not one-time is so they can make more money over the course of the long run, and they can better judge when they are doing thing right (more people sub if the game is going well)

Three fair I can fit all of my abilities on two action bars. The third through sixth Is only there for things like mounts, pets, etc

Swtorista just stick with friends, i recommend playing in the Roleplaying guilds where you can have endless amount of story's the only limit is the imagination. Play flashpoints, explore planets just because you might find cool things and so much more.

This is a very informative video. I only play on a couple characters mostly (my Sith Sorcerer and Sith Marauder) and I got some of the unlocks for both and am a preferred status player. I just wish they do away with the credit cap, or at the very least have an unlock to permanently lift the cap.
Cheers! The Credit Cap is also one of the big ones for me, a lot of my hobbies involve credits.
My main concern is getting new mounts sold on the GTN, or more specifically the Command Thrones (the floating throne that has the Sith Empire emblem as a hologram on top). That would go so epic for both my characters.
Buuuuuuuuuut they're sometimes sold for at the very least 1 or 2 million credits, last I checked. I have more than enough for both characters in the escrow, but that's basically useless since I can only use 350,000 of it at a time :(
+Premier Rik Latyeskov I've heard preferred players save up their escrow credits then use a referral code and bit all the expensive things during that "free" week, have you tried that yet? I've not tested it myself.

Im learning to like preffered status. My recent health issues have made playing. Nearly impossible i let my subscription lapse, but playing as preffered worked well for me the few times i have been able to play

I remember how mad i was, considering I bought the second most expensive version of the game only to have most of my characters locked once they decided to go free to play. It felt like they were stealing from me.
I think maybe you're mis-remembering a bit? The original game you had to pay EVERY MONTH and if you didn't pay you were 100% locked out from playing at all, no matter which edition you bought. When they switched things up to add a free option, you could then choose to unsubscribe but still also be able to play. Kinda the opposite of stealing from you, they gave you more options to play without paying at all which was really cool IMO - especially since you can re-sub at anytime, and take a break when you are playing less but still want to hop on once a month.
Once it went free to play I had already done all the content in the game so I unsubscribed believing I could keep what I already earned namely the characters and cash, I had to subscribe in order to use them. This is what I refer to when I say it felt like they were stealing.
As opposed to not being able to log in at all after unsubscribing? There is little difference, man. All in all, the credit cap is better than no gameplay whatsoever.

Hey Lucas, late reply! It depends on the last time you subscribed. You can only get to 70 if you subscribed after December 2017 and unlocked the KOTET expansion.
At least us Brits haven't got those mosquitoes to worry about!

IIRC you have to be in preferred status, who hasn't been subscribed for at least 90 days.
Here's the common list of troubleshooting for referral links...
IF THE CODE/LINK DOES NOT WORK THIS MIGHT BE WHY:
- The system is finicky and does not always work.
- You are completely free-to-play, never paid for anything
- You are preferred, but you never subscribed (ex you bought cartel coins or an expansion instead)
- You have been referred too recently within 90 days.
- You are currently subscribed (this sometimes works though)
- You have subscribed already too recently within 90 days (this sometimes works though)
- You are a new player, but already had an account then used the link.
You need to make your account ON THE LINK, not have it beforehand. When
we found this bug me and my friend just made a brand new account so he
could use it

SWTOR is owned by EA. The company that milks everything with dlc's or in this case by making most of the thing subscription restricted. And the restriction gets worse everytime

my point is as f2p except credit restrictions u have same game for free as i paid £140 for collectors edition infact its much easier now and u get less restrictions we had in vanilla swtor so stop winging its FREE if u not happy about it just dont play it

It was my biggest bane when I was preferred for a while.
Was not an issue until 3.0 and those damn slicing nodes. I think bioware intentionally inflated the credit value to lock out pref/f2p from endgame content (before that, weekly passes sold for less than credit cap). The idea is kinda reinforced with how they removed the weekly passes as a whole.

Having not played in forever, I decided to start a new toon, learn again from the ground up. Turns out you can send your alt no credits at all. Also, new toon got Mounts in the mail, can not unlock them, and no idea how/when I do get access to them.

Something worth a mention is that when f2p (not sure about preferred) you get locked out of both the in-game support system and are prevented from posting anything on the official forums. This meant that I was unable to report a bug I came across which broke one of my class missions and was so game-breaking (for me as a primarily rp/pve player) I almost quit, fortunately, it was fixed so I could keep playing, and I'm now subscriber, as I've finally gotten a job, but it really ruined the experience for me for a while
That's one of the huge problems with being preferred... it's not a problem until it is. I wish they would allow players to contact them about game-breaking class quest bugs. I think they had to lock out f2p/preferred because otherwise they would get way more reports than they could handle.
The level cap is per server. I found it out when I was already preferred. If I have a cap of six characters, I can have six in one server, plus six in a second server, plus six in the other... What seems not to carry from one server to the other are the boosted characters.

I played SWtoR when it came out, server-firsted hardmode Soa (the first operation) and then quit for Guild Wars 2. I watch this video today with nostalgia glasses but convinced me that Guild Wars 2 is still so much better.
This is one reason why i stay away from swtor, subscription. i had millions of credits but will be capped at 350k and also the limits as a Preferred is very discouraging.
It's definitely a huge hindrance, it's one of the main reasons I am subbed right now (having access to my credits is a must for collecting/decorating/etc)

I'm a preferred player, and I find that with a few unlocks and a bit of planning I can do most of what I want to do. If I want to craft armour for my friends or buy something that costs a lot of credits then I use a referral codes every three months. It's a decent trade off, but you have to plan ahead.

I remember when everyone subscribed. You dealt with far less kids, rage quits, and PVP. people were also worried about reputation as bad players earned a bad reputation that was difficult to get rid of.

The credit cap for f2p is 250K as a fmr. f2p myself I know the pain & headache that dumb restriction is. luckily I subscribe on Christmas 2015. before I sub. on month before I bought cartel coins to get the important unlocks you just mentioned. I enjoy your videos Swtorista keep up the great work & have a good week. I finally transferred my 4 alts from the Bastion server two to the Harbinger & two to the Jedi covenant. But some how the Galactic Movers lost or didn't transport my furniture/decorations from the Bastion server. hehehe I reported it to them. I also took advantage to bring my only two alts from the Red Eclipse to the Harbinger. those were the first I transferred after watching your last video on how to transferred thanks.

I have my other alts are there. in the harbinger I got my Outlander Guardian, the one I created with our free lv.60 token. & on the Jedi Covenant, i got my main Juggernaut.
Question: If I buy the artifact authoriation equipment, and use it in one of my char's, does it unlock for my whole account or?

random compliment but holy crap your voice is pretty, quite refreshing from the male raspy voices of most main channels that involve star wars. There all still good just most are monotone or force dialog. starting my first playthrough today getting all my info before hand lol so thanks for the tips keep it up.

I’m not looking to waste too much time getting the best stuff or participate in the most ludicrous events. I just want as much story as possible since Disney SW isn’t cutting it for me and KOTOR 3 is not likely going to happen.
If you subscribe you unlock all the expansion story content forever. (If you become preferred from buying cartel coins you don't get the story)
Swtorista they had an offer where you spend twenty bucks and you get subscription for a month, permanent access to the expansions (including Kotfe) and some OKish items

@Ashley Lake because last time i played wow which was a month ago i didnt feel punished for being poor. when i play this game i feel like im being punished for not having the money to pay for a subscription. they could have gone with a startrek online like f2p style. the game is free but you gotta pay for a few end game things which are still obtainable through gameplay

Montagne if you're coming to the game from an mmo mindset, true. If you just want to see the sequel to the kotor series, free-to-play is completely acceptable (at least until you've finished your first two characters).
Yes! F2P is totally do-able if you just want to try out the story. There are lots of little restrictions but nothing that will make it impossible to play if you only want to play free-to-play.
Free 2 Play players should at the very least buy the Digital Upgrade Pack for 4.99 US. It gets you Preferred Status and lots of goodies too! Check it out at the bottom of this page... Digital Upgrade Pack 4.99 USD, www.swtor.com/buy
I would heartily recommend at least paying 5 bucks and getting the rocket boost, but swtor f2pers can see most of the class game play and storyline much better than the wow f2pers who get capped at level 20.
very well you, I been playing this game on and off since it was in beta and I love the story. I have done it soo much the planet missions are almost a bore to me. Really wish they would bring back some type of class story line.
I can imagine that you can only do them so many times, when I level I usually just do the class stories. I think I've only done KOTFE twice though.

I played before the 55 level cap and I saved and saved til I was able to unlock everything that a f2p needed. I sub here and there to get back in to the game.
Best f2p model in the biz! LOL. I really wish they'd get rid of the weekly pvp limit on f2p and preferred, and open up galactic command to everyone (eww I said that like GC is a good thing)

I am blow away by the fact that they haven't eliminated that work around. I can only assume that the devs who knew how to actually do it have long since left the project. I like to imagine that EA handed Musco the task and that he has been struggling and failing at it for like 3 years straight.
I think they have known about it for a long time and decided to leave it, to not penalize subscribers. Ex you bring a new friend to the game and say "let's play together!!!" then the friend subs just from liking it so much.

Zulthon Best F2P model for an MMO? You've clearly never heard of Warframe.
I'd like to add that preferred players have reduced RE chance from 60% to 30%. Also, while I don't have hard numbers, crit chance on running missions and crafting is reduced. As an example, running slicing missions while sub 4 grade 10 with 4 level 50 companions will yield on average 5 purple mats, while as a preferred, running 3 missions (2 rich) will yield 2-3, and not on every run.
+Bojan Kezele yes! Crafting as a preferred player is rough for so many reasons haha. Definitely no good of you are trying to craft for profit, fine if you just want to make yourself a cool armorset.
Honestly, crafting restrictions make little to no sense. I doubt anyone would sub just to have crafting improved, but BW business model is strange as it is, so who am I to judge :) Thanks for the reply!

Leveling from 1 to 20 is no faster whether preferred, subscribed or free-to-play. Leveling in general is so fast these days you really won't notice the difference too much without a subcription. Run the pvp and galactic star fighter intros that you can que for, while you are playing the story... these give good xp. Join a guild too this gives you up to a 10% xp bonus. If for some peculiar reason you are under leveled, you can catch up if you do grouped content like queuing a flashpoint or running planet heroics with guildies. While grouped you gain XP at a higher rate.
The best thing to do when starting the game is to make a $4.99 purchase of coins to get preferred status. Preferred gives you 6 character slots(plus some other nice things) and you can take your time with the story for 6 of the classes ***without wasting subscription time on basic leveling.***
After you've done 6 characters out of the 8 classes from the starter planets to finishing chapter 3 you should have 930 cartel coins (that's 450 from purchase and 480 from achievements), plus 40 more if you do the Esseles and Black talon intro flashpoints. Then buy a 600 coin server slot unlock from the cartel market. Then level up a 7th character through chapter 3/level 50 . At this point you subscribe if you like the game and you should have pretty good idea what class(es) you like playing. Having multiple characters helps you with crafting, earning reputation, credits etc, when you finally subscribe and helps you get the most out of your subscription.

Haven't been sure about it since it came out. But Ive seen gameplay and just the thought of lightsabers in an mmo makes me want to play it. Never mind the funny speech options :D

Bioware who did make the game is owned by EA and does things that ea wants like microtransaction's and such. So technically it was made by a subset of EA and is owned by EA.
MMOs generally are a bad idea.
This was really informative as I'm a f2p player and was wondering what all I'd get as I was worried I wouldn't be able to play the dlcs after my sub ended the main reason I want to sub is because I keep getting rewards after missions and they always are requiring one of the DLCs and it's so frustrating

One thing not mentioned in the video for crafting is preferred or free players can only send out 3 companions to do crafting/gathering at any given point where as subscribers have no such limit

Credit cap isn't the issue, Credit inflation is. As long as the market value for a escrow unlock is priced below the credit cap I would have no issues.
That's true, inflation is a huge issue.. for everyone, too.

I played this shit with an f2p account for 2 months.
When I got to level 50, the tears began to fall from my face, and with a nice psychopathic smile I downloaded a pirate game and told EA to go to the seventh deepest place in hell.

Im fine with everything else but credit caps is just really annoying especially when good items cost over 1 million. I would just spend 100 dollars once for a lifetime subscription so I don't think about the anxiety of purchasing months after months of subscription.
I would recommend using the Referral Code that people give out that allows you to temporarily become a subscriber for a week I believe. It allows you to gain full access as a subscriber and after it ends you become a preferred player. I got all the expansions from Knights of the Old Republic to the Machine Gods thing and after the nine month waiting limit to be able to use another referral code I got all the expansions from the Umbara crisis to the new expansion as of rn
Yes the referral code is very nice if you've ever subbed before! It won't unlock any expacs you don't have yet but it will give you the other subscriber perks
Not sure if you covered this, but F2P players can't access chat until level 10, preferred and F2P players have a chat timer for General chat, and Preferred and F2P players have less free emotes than Subscribers do (Ex: /sleep)
It actually recently got bumped up to 25 it seems. They're trying more spam prevention, I didn't want to give an exact number incase it changes again.
And yeah, emotes are restricted too! Boo!
I've always been a F2P, mainly because I'm broke as hell and have nobody to ask for money, but the only DLC's I'd buy would be ROTHC or KOTET

Preferred = Riding a bike with the plastic seat, but you're not sure if it might fall off.
Another great video! Only issue is now I'm tempted to download the game. At the very least to see what my legacy bank looks like without my collection of ops passes. I can't go back though. Not again.

I unsubbed a little while ago, thinking that I wasn't going to be playing again, but I found myself missing the game, this happens from time to time with me, which why I'm hesitant about resubbing.

I would say if you can afford it, get the section x unlock, it offers a challenge and a new companion

at one point when I was preferred the most I carried with me at any one time was 600,000 credits but after I spent it the cap went back down to 350,000
At update 5.0 they converted commendations and currency crystals to credits. So you got a little bonus for a while.

Yeah that referral link has some handy stuff in it, but not everything. Which would you consider the most-needed unlock?
the fact is with end game locked behind sub. the plum gear unlock cause few of the cheaper ones come in that box from the referral link. not made a new toon in some time to see what ones.
your not gonna beleive this, but there was a healer on Red Eclipse called Scy'a that i raided with! I think you have an influence on SWTOR players ;)

I bought the collectors edition on game release back in the day, £180 for the big box with the statue and all the bells and whistles. Now I find myself ranked as 'prefered'. SO very very unhappy about this as I lost a whole bunch of features.
Back in the day if you unsubscribed even if you bought the collectors edition you couldn't play at all.
That isn't a lot of comfort. I was a founder and put a lot of faith and cash into the game. 180 quid is a years membership payments, it put me off collectors editions and investing in new ip for life.
Nice video, I'm planning on starting playing again, I first played SWTOR like 5 years ago, seems like a good idea to subscribe one in a year, making it $15 per year
yep that's a good frugal plan! Technically once per expansion is about what you need for the full experience.
I play as a free to play player, but if become a preferred player through buying cartel coins for 5 dollars does that mean that I unlock every expansion currently available? Great Video btw :D
+Lawa nope, sorry! $5 in coins will get you the preferred perks and unlocks, but will NOT get you the expansions and will NOT let you level to 70.
Years ago these unlocks for accounts were pretty cheap on shadowlands so I bought all of them while I was f2p so I don't really have much problem except for credit cap whenever I'm not subbing. I could only last 11 months as a f2p though I got bored of black hole, belsavis and section x.
