The discussion of using Souls-like combat in 2D game is something I feel a lot better being a part of since I’ve played Code Vein recently. I found myself trying to actively dodge a lot in that game instead of using I-frames, and once I made that adjustment, the game as a whole felt a lot better. I’m fine with games like Metroid Dread and Dead Cells giving you both options, but when it feels like it’s not designed for both, that’s when it can feel boring.
Hollow Knight really is the quintessential modern metroidvania. There's a really clear distinction between pre and post HK metroidvanias in first and foremost movement and then boss design. To quickly address dark souls, I've always said dark souls was a 3d metroidvania. Bonfires are literally save points. You open up the map in a very similar way to a metroidvania. The game is short and difficulty and a lack of guidance are what give it length. A very metroid way of delivering story or at the very least old game design. What it did bring to the table was limited healing, the parry moment, and stamina bars. I think the lasting legacy will be the way limited, and predictable healing allows you to pace your game. Going back to the knight. HK really brought back to the forefront what was great about SM and SoTN. Which was awesome movement options. Those games feel good to move around in. Dash, air dash, wall jump, double jump, shinespark, and shade dash make HK awesome to move around in and games after it generally got the memo. Enhanced movement also means you can really push boss design. The player being capable of being almost anywhere on the screen quickly allows you to demand a lot from the player. That's really what stands out when looking at Dread and PoP. How much more of the screen is used in a fight. Mother brain is fought in a small room where what most people will do is jump up and down to dodge 2 attacks. Dracula in SoTN ain't much better. Darius and purple laser bird have you flying across the screen. Long way to say we will recognize that the genre notably changed after its existence.
It sounds like your recording environment is changed too, or you've added some FX to your audio stream; I can say it's definitely improved! Always enjoy a good All Souls to end the day~
Honestly your sound has always been way better than you give it credit but the new audio setup sounds nice. IMO taking courses on audio production isn't as necessary nowadays for most people/applications. Sure, if you want to go into it specifically as a field it's needed but there's sooooo much more info online about every aspect of audio than ever. (Could've used that in the mid-00's using Acid Pro *cries*)
Ever think about making a video showing off how to do some of the glitches/speed run strats for SotN or any other CV game? Unless there is a video like that that I haven't seen yet.
How would a completionist playthrough work? You have to fuse at least two one off souls into weapons and I seem to remember one of them not being the highest tier in the fusions.
45:10 Proof that Killer Fish is the best soul in the series (for two rooms)
Had a kitten fall asleep on me, you're posting some Dawn... Today is looking up. 🤠
Yo wth, I never even thought about using it
@@ryozaki96 As he points out earlier, getting that soul before Rahab requires sequence breaking.
"Wow, this start is insane, this seed is going to be over in an instant."
*looks at video time*
"Ah, right, all souls."
As soon as he said it, I heard Creature laugh in the distance.
If there was a mode you could fill the entire castle with water, we would finally see the glorious killer fish seed.

You can back dash cancel the save station, amazing.

I love how Creature is a meme in two different games for two different reasons
LET'S GOOOOOO! GIANT SLUG! :D
Audio sounds clean.
Come on, play some more Ecclesia!
My 3 fav game of all time. But don’t tell the man what to do.
Yeah I know 😔
@@ryozaki96 I want him to play it too
Good news

Yo, is our old man Jup actually learning technology? That makes one of us lol
I don't think anyone's said anything about your quality, but you do sound a lot better!

I wonder how the seals would work or not in a DS collection.
right stick directional inputs would be pretty good imo

Exactly, Completionist would require multiple clears and NG+ cycles!

The groans! XD
Smash Ultimate 2 and BK4? I should thank my lucky Star Oceans.
Good ol' _ORRR_ simulator
It's a good sim....
Right?
You should try Rabi-ribi
Killer Fish > Claimh
Nice new microphone
Why do you play the randomizers with the Seals on? Isn't it more fun using the Mod that makes all seals automatic?
He seems to prefer the variance of occasionally failing the seal execution. And Jupiter seems to generally prefer keeping things as vanilla as he can.
I think your too hard on your audio production, I have a degree in audio engineering and I always thought your sound set up sounded good.
I think the audio now is too echoey. Can you change it so you don't sound like you are inside a cave?
First...time I've ever commented "first." Settling in to watch this :)
Im early
Maybe you could've gotten the souls if you pootis'd the spencer there.
