The Anna's hummers stay here all year long and the winter blooms provide food for them. Zone 8b in Western Washington
That was a colourful Autumnal haul! Particularly like the Mountain witch-alder...beautiful leaf shape and russet colour, turning to bright red when the Sun shines through ~ worth showcasing near the main or Meadow House :)
Be aware that bayberry will spread/sucker very fast if happy where you plant it. Also with bayberry you need a male and female to get fruit. Bayberries have a waxy coating which the colonist used to make candles. The leaves are also edible as an herb in cooking (similar to bayleaf) I am jealous you have such lovely nurseries near you. I would love to shop there!
Fall, best time to plant , ground still warm and sales on nurseries, even when the plants going to dormancy , roots will still grow and establish and come back next season with all the energy :). that is very important to still water the plants, until is consistent 40 degrees and below and snow on the ground. I also learned, that even the deer resistant plants, when they come from the nursery , plants smells and test different than they ones grow in nature. al least until establish. I also find out that is hard to find true natives, and not be treat it with neonicotinoids, not all growers disclose this info neither are any regulation as far as I know.Was a big disappointed to find out this working an a nursery myself, and there is more research to get done. thank you Guys for sharing and is a beautiful nursery by the way. Always fun watching shopping trips. Do you have these 2 books: Native Plants of the Northeast: a guide for gardening Andy conservation by DJ Leopold and Planting the Future by Rosemary Gladstar. Both awesome but the latter tells how long many of these plants live and also how many years before they bloom, like the Pink Lady Slipper takes about 7 years after the leaves show before it flowers and could live 40 years.
I have huge oak leaf hydrangeas in my backyard and the deer do enjoy them. I try to outsmart them by occasionally spraying a repellent and by hanging smelly things they don’t like on branches. When I chop my nepeta, mint, Russian sage, and garlic leaves I spread/hang the cuttings where the deer might nibble. I also spread citrus peels in plants they are prone to. I think we have tried it all 😊 I never invested in a deer fence like you did, but thinking back now I wish we would’ve. I’m glad we aren’t heavily browsed but they let me know they’re here. Nice selection of plants…hope to see you on planting day💚

The helianthus autumn gold is one of the best late flowering perennials. Gets overlooked until it flowers. Glad you picked it up. The reason for the pots buried like that in mulch is mostly to keep tall plants from falling over in the wind. In the winter some may have to get moved in a covered greenhouse spaced pot to pot to protect from the cold
Hello, I usually have plants buried in my garden soil and mulch sometimes completely to the pot brim. I leave them until springtime and try to decide where to put them, or if I donate to our annual garden sale my work is almost done. I once kept a lilac that bloomed and was very happy in its large plastic pot until I needed the pot for our fig tree.

You are having Christmas early. That's fun. I have walked by rows of bushes and they have the most beautiful scents, some during thev day and some at night. i would say double down on planting trees and doing more birdhouses and bathouses and owl houses - trees have great roi - overall diversity is good - some may be able to make it now whereas 20 years ago they may not - persimmons and paw paw, pecans - try some moon shots
I find it really difficult to buy native plants from local plant nurseries in Latvia. Most plants I see being sold are japanese spireas, barberries, thujas... To be honest I don't even know which plants are native to Latvia, it is hard to find info...
Anything that flowers is a polinater. Almost everything flowers. Just because something isnt native dosent mean native wildlife dosent love it and thrive on it. We also like midle east and asian food in the west, and chinese native people florish in america... plants fungus algeas and animals move and evolve.

TTo prevent deer eatting your plants hire a sprayer tto spray the plants witth capcasum (hot pepper juice) to cover the plants. Deer won't rat it.
Do not spray on windy days.
