Solar got a win from the music shows for But I, and she was also able to perform Colors with these dancers on the music shows. Solar's always made up for her weaker dance background with hard work and charisma. You can tell she is loveing ever moment. As I'm sure you know Mamamoo has been the strongest ally to the LGBTQ+ community of any of the major groups going all the way back to the beginning.
I think that's part of why I love her performance so much - it's a lot of hard work and natural stage presence, which I admire so much! This is someone who LOVES what she does!!!
When you talked about young queer people in Korea saying "This is Our moment" you hit the nail on the concept head. Solar spelled the song Colors but she spelled the album title Colours to emphasize Ours - diversity and community simultaneously; self-love and respect for others' uniqueness and individuality via six songs in completely different genres or musical colors. She wrote or co-wrote the music and lyrics for 5 of them, including co-writing the lyrics for But I and writing the lyrics and music for Colors. On first listen "I want a black and a white one and a pink and a purple" just sounded like a random list but when I considered the line in the context of the album concept and the queer representation in Colors I think she's asking us to look beyond the limited palette of colors used to describe (and divide) people to see and embrace the rainbow of colors in humanity. As I'm sure you know Mamamoo has been an ally of the queer community since their rookie days. You also used the word normalize in your comments, which is exactly how I'd describe MMM's agenda regarding the representation of the range of gender and sexuality. There are many examples but the MV for Moonbyul's erotic song Shutdown is a good one. It shows the two women as regular homebodies going about their lives rather than the kinky or titillating way lesbian sexuality is often portrayed in music videos. Love Ran did the choreo and House of Love provided the dancers for the Colors video and several live performances on the tv music shows. You can find the original dance video and a fun behind the scenes vid of the Colors shoot on Love Ran's yt channel.
I looove the distinction you made between Solar and Chungha while still honoring both and recognizing how each of them helps represent this culture in K-pop, in their own ways! I hated seeing people online pit these two against each other when they're both on the same side (and Chungha loves her sunbae Solar).
YES, they are very clearly different in how they've approached incorporating this style of dance into their music, but they've both been SO, SO needed in the k-pop industry and they are QUEENS! 👑
Fun fact: Solar wrote and composed Colors 2 years ago on her memo, specifically designed for voguing dance with ballroom concept in mind since the very beginning and she didn't even think she would be the one to sing it until this time round she decided to pull it out from her memo and add it to her COLOURS album. She literally created the most inclusive song in kpop history plus a very rare Bass House genre in kpop, and it's her first full English song with her own style rapping. Speaking of voguing dance, this is the first kpop song with voguing dance from head to toes, meaning completely in voguing according to the choreographer Love Ran, the mother of the kiki House of Love, where the dancers in this performance video / MV are from. It's a huge milestone in kpop and in Korea that even the choreographer, a pioneer in Korean voguing dance, and all of the House of Love dancers are very proud of. Solar not only brings queer community into spotlight in this video, but she also brought these dancers to her comeback performances on Korean National TV 3 times, SBS M The Show, MBC M Show Champion, and KBS2 The Seasons: Zico's artist to perform Colors with her. Speaking of her own voguing dance skills, I'm no expert and of course Solar is not professional voguing dancer. According to her own words, she took 4 to 5 sessions to learn the voguing, but even Love Ran gave her the honorable name Love Solar like she's one of their crew to pay respect her dedication in everything. (Love is the given name as a member of the house House of Love). I would avoid comparing Chungha and Solar's dance skills because they are very different in terms of personal charisma and stage presence.
Wow, so cool that she wrote and produced it so long ago! I'm glad we get to see it now! And yes, I've seen in some other places that Love Ran highlighted that this was vogue all the way through. In my dance practice reaction, I was getting excited seeing some of the different styles of vogue that were incorporated. That's part of what I mean about this being ballroom culture - they are FULLY showcasing more than just some dance moves, but the rich culture that is part of the ballroom community and I love to see it!! As I said in my reaction, I think Solar did a great job with this. As a dancer/performer, of course I am going to talk about the actual dance itself and it's important to highlight the difference between the dance style being studied & trained in properly vs just learned quickly for a music video. Especially BECAUSE there is such a deep cultural aspect that represents a marginalized community, voguing/ballroom culture isn't something to be used as a gimmick to seem "cool"... but Solar & Chungha both have shown respect to and elevated the dance styles in different ways, and they both did so beautifully. Comparing doesn't mean one is better than the other; it's just showing the difference in what they've done! 💚
I love your input so much ❤ Solar and Mamamoo have been allies of the LGBTQA+ community for so long and I love them so much for thay. And Solar solely written and composed Colors and it's just really beautiful. ❤
About the part with the comparison with Chungha, i personally feel it's unfair. Solar is Solar and Chungha is Chungha. Let's not forget Chungha was originally a dancer from a very young age n then became an idol. She is a sunbae irt to dancing to Solar who started her idol career with zero background to any of this to at 21 and debuting at 24 and without professional dancer teaching them( Mamamoo made their own choreo during their rookies days). Solar on the other hand is VERY ADVENTUROUS, i can say that she's done so many stuff that Chungha has yet to do. Solar also said during the cb that she can do every genre and be GOOD at it even tho she isn't EXCELLENT or PRO in one and that's what special about her. She has done belly dancing, pole dancing, Voguing now she's learning bit of ballet for her concert apart from usual idol choreo irt to dancing. She's very active on activism n spreading awareness part, wether it be animals, women menstruation or genital mutilation to the current situation of Palestine. Apart from all this she is acting in musicals, being a vocal coach on shows and singing so many songs (she has so many songs outside of the album) like Vincenzo ost, Edm (not house) for another show and so many things that you'll lose count of and let's not forget she started her solo journey in 2020, with her solo albums being every 2 yr apart. This isn't being said to look down on Chungha but this is for ppl that are comparing and some are going to extent of calling her a Chungha wannabe n using queer. No she n her groupmates have been doing so since 2016, they performed in lehzin event which was boycotted by many due to it giving a platform to the queer, she's got Nana on her yt and HIP mv. Rainbow moos(Mamamoo queer fans) is the first idol community that is solely for queer that funds the the pride parade in Korea. So please I'm tired of ppl bringing in Chungha in every Solar narration.
...I feel like this comment is maybe a response to things you've seen overall online, and not my reaction specifically. Because you just agreed with and expanded on the same things I said in my video. 😕 Comparing doesn't mean one is bad and the other is good. It's just highlighting the difference, which is important when we are talking about the actual technique/performance of a dance style. As a dancer/performer, I ALWAYS discuss that in my reactions. And because this is such a specific dance style, that is tied to such strong cultural aspects of a marginalized community, and the entire point I was making about representation in mainstream media, it IS important to highlight the difference between it being properly studied, trained in and showcased vs something that is more "fun." Chung Ha is a trained dancer, so she has been able to really showcase the dance style itself in a way it deserves to be showcased. Solar gave a lot more of the culture, attitude, vibe of the dance which is a big part of the community as well. BOTH are fantastic and BOTH are important forms of representation. All of which I said in my video 😝 I understand wanting to defend or support idols if you feel they're being looked down on, but... the internet doesn't need to be like this! haha. Or at least my little corner of the internet (K-Pop W/ Khadija) doesn't. We can just discuss these things, even to compare two idols side by side, without seeing it as a negative thing. It's all love for both of them! 💚
Chungha's dance choreographer is non other than LaChica. Lachica appeared as one of the dance crews in the first ever Street Woman Fighter. Gabee (LaChica's leader) & Chungha been friends since both of them attended at the same dance institute. Chungha also revealed that she's one of the founding members of Lachica..
Solar is such a baddie. I love how your reaction. I also got emotional to colors. There is something so brave and loving in its clear depiction of queer culture in a highly homophobic country.
Ahhh the energy in 'But I' and 'Colors'! 'Colors' soo unexpected in Kpop in general, but yes I am seeing breakout styles and vibes more and more and I'm here for it! All the colors please!! Was excited/surprised to see this flavor on Build Up too (Solar was a judge on the show) when Bain (from JustB) and Minseo (from B.D.U) did a cover/performance of the song 'River'. Bain gave it all in his stylized tone, inflections and body language. The judges lost their ish! A must watch video with the judge reactions (the version of the video with 1.4M views) - 제대로 흑화한 듀엣의 美친 무대 🎤River
