76 years seen all the Greats from Sinatra , Sam Cooke, Chuck Berry, Janes Brown, Fats Domino, Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Dylan, Marley, The Beach Boys, Motown, Aretha, MJ, my kids introduced me to Rap and Hip Hop starting with Grandmaster Flash, Rahim, Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Nas, Eminem, NWA, Tupac, et Al. Caught Hobi freestyle, on Hope on the Street back in 2016. My first love is dance, then music. Went channel surfing for more J-Hope and found BTS. Fell in love with music again. Early, Old Skool BTS has a special place in my heart. I thought they were great from the jump. I could see the talent, but what came through to me was their sincerity, authenticity, rawness and vulnerability. As I got into their discography I was blown away by their beats, melodies, vocals, rapping, productions dance, MVs, live stages, but the LYRICS , the LYRICS. BTS is pure ART, CULTURE, PHILOSOPHY, POETRY, FASHION, CINEMATICS, DANCE, AND MUSIC in one complete package, and it's delivered by seven of the most sincere, hard working talented, HUMBLE young men. I get upset when some people almost apologize for early BTS saying they have grown, yes they grew, but they had somthing to say from the start and those early albums: 2 Kool for Skool, O RU L8 2, DARK and Wild are some of my most played and those are their ROOTS, 🎉and those roots come through LOUD in 2024, you can see it and hear it in all their solo projects: Jimin's Face, Hobipalooza , RM'S Indigo and RPWP, Suga's D-Day, Jungkook's Golden, V's Layover, and Jin's Awake and Astronaut. No one on the planet it doing what BTS is doing. Drop the 🎤. Love your insights. Love your channell.💜

I have the following lyrics from "No More Dream" tattoo'd on my arm: 너의 길을 가라고, 단 하루를 살아도, which means roughly "Go your own way, even if you live for just one day. I love this line, not just because it has such a deep and beautiful and important meaning - but because of the way this line is used melodically in the song, it's just so delicious and unusual. I don't think this song is only applicable to youth. In fact, as we age, the loss of dreams - as we run short on time, our abilities wane and society cares less for us - becomes more and more inevitable and so living without a dream becomes an essential adaptation to make. One thing I've learned loving BTS while I, myself, am aging into senior life is that youth and later age folks have much more in common that one might otherwise think - relative powerlessness.

I love the line musically, but love its message even more. For me, as an older ARMY, what's stood out the most is that BTS' messages are universal - for all of us at any point in life. In fact, rather than living without a dream, I now have more vivid dreams, more goals to achieve - despite the fact that I've just started my 6th decade. They've inspired me to MOVE on things, and get going. It aint over until it's over!

All of this to say that while you are based in a different music genre, I feel a connection to the way you look at music because it reminds me of my dad. That deep love, respect, and understanding of this art form comes through in how you talk about records, artists, and such. I look forward to your content and I learn from not just what you say but how you say it. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I remember a group called SuperM the so called Avengers of Kpop, Lee Soo Man (SM CEO) really thought he can just manufacture the next BTS, just by combining a group idols, who's apparently better looking, better at singing, & dancing than BTS.
They even endorsed that they are "manlier" version than BTS.

Reminds me of the Boracity video about the media obsession over "the next BTS" - like you said people only look at the surface level things they have done that ended up being successful while ignoring the fact that their story was built under conditions that no one who is wanting success, fame or fortune would ever subject themselves to in the first place.
As an Asian who was born in Asia, this song came 30 years too late to save my dreams but I'm glad that in hindsight it was able to help me come to terms as to why I was never able to answer the classic "What do you want to be when you grow up?" question Western schools kept asking me.
Gosh what I wouldn't do to see you and your friend's thoughts on their song Hip Hop Lover/phile.

Idol groups have members who rap, but BTS contains 3 rappers, a VERY distinct difference. You also have to remember, BTS saying these things in NMD, to call out elders and talking to the youth was very edgy and rebellious in Korea where hierarchy is everything. A brave move by them AND Bang PD.
Important things in music for me are the rhythm/beat, does it make you move/move you and the words/lyrics. This is why I love BTS so much because, whether as a group or solo, they fulfill all my wants and needs with their music..
But most importantly of all, it is the meaning behind what they do. The sincerity they put into their music and their INTENTION. No hurt, just healing.💜

At this very point, generally the South Korean music industry does NOT understand music for music sake. It’s a commodity only. SK became aware of western music in the 1990s. A business man grabbed ahold of hip hop, later it was dubbed kpop. But its aesthetics only, not the heart and soul. Just cars, bling and girls and thuggy. Guy got rich, other labels popped up and the big three were born. The factory was built, in came young hopefuls, often signing contracts without lawyers or agents advocating for the kids, kids sucked dry, thrown out on a whim often owing more than they were paid. The more successful ones (usually male) would have to end their careers to go to mandatory service. So more groups were formed by the companies. Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat. All this was fine and the status quo until BTS came, and a literal David and Goliath scenario played out. To sum this all up quickly and succinctly (but not completely). SK is not taking lessons from BTS/their label, but want still the quick fix, the money. They don’t understand music. And they are tiredly trying to say BTS represents kpop. (BTS does NOT). And are trying to continue the factory production line and create the next BTS when 1) BTS is still here 2) when you become the next anything your never 1st something 3) No one can replace MJ, The Beatles etc. ….thank you for this, much love💜

i disagree that the kpop industry doesn't understand music... while my favorite group is BTS, there are many many talented groups and producers/songwriters working behind the scenes who understand music composition very well. i just think that kpop as a genre and industry is more associated with electronic dance music, as there a few groups that do hip-hop authentically and really well (i don't know of any except for BTS, maybe someone can point some more out to me). and if i'm not mistaken, BTS is one of the few groups (if not the only) where some of their members are true artists with their own solo projects BEFORE joining the group (RM and SUGA). even BTS' first concepts had bling, girls, and was a little thuggy, and it was controversial. I mean even HYBE now is basically part of the Big Three pack, and are continuing the kpop model, which is a little ironic, but also not really. BTS is a unique group/artist regardless. and sure there are many things that can be improved in the industry, but to me it seems not that much different than someone who wants to be an Olympian athlete and therefore must train day in and day out to hone their craft... making a money in these fields are arguably just more difficult than other fields

I’m so grateful to hear you talk about influence vs copying. Hearing the rappers telling the vocal line “listen to music- listen to everything”, wanting them to be influenced to grow and learn and then knowing that they have been accused of plagiarizing, it’s been kind of a sore spot for me. I love how you differentiate those two things and educate us on how important musical influence is.

this is exactly what I have thought before. Its one thing to talk about a dream group. But you don't get to that dream by emulating the success. You get there by emulating the PATH to that success. Its been the message of BTS from day one. The passion for the art and the message. Its not something you can copy paste. We all can learn from BTS. And if you only see the samsung ads and endless drip, you have missed the point entirely. I appreciate your take and I am so glad that folks in the hip hop community can see how the heart of hip hop lives on in Seoul.

No More Dream will be a relatable song forever, in the sense of where there's youth trying to navigate the world adults left for them, this song will resonate with them. The message is universal, because it has feelings/emotions that are universal, doubts, anxiety, fears of a future, parental and society expectations, systems, impositions and you don't even knowing yourself yet and how would you fit in that world.
It's like you just said, your purest dreams start to be watered down by situations and people. We are glad that there is people like yourself, and BTS and other hardworking artists, producers, creatives who didn't let the world tell them what to dream of. You kept pushing it, until it became your reality, and you kept on dreaming bigger dreams maintaining your purest child-like form of living this life.

Seriously love your analysis & breakdown of the lyrics and message of this track.
You love the word 'Dream' cos you're Sleep😉😆
When you spoke on the dreams of childhood becoming diluted as you grow older, I thought that was such a great take away for me.
I appreciate this debut track even more than before.
Suga's verse for me, I just love how you made sense of it for me.
I didn't appreciate nor understand the point he was making before hearing your analysis.
And I think because most people would have a really quick, superficial impression when first seeing BTS, lyrics like these would not penetrate nor have the effect it should. It really shows you're a true music lover and artist yourself, to push past the aesthetics knowing there's substance there.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom🙌👏🙏

As someone who grew up thinking I would be an exemplary citizen, a perfect 10 for my bosses and for the capitalist society, getting to my late teens, facing grown-up hardships... etc, realizing I'm not all that and I dont have to be all that to feel like my life is worth something to someone else and then finding and listening to BTS in a world of pop and love songs was like a breath of fresh air. Knowing I didn't need to be perfect for anyone else but for me, learning and getting to know myself, my work ethics, learning that I can be an exemplary citizen by not just doing what everyone else expects of me, but by being kind and respecting people and their dreams, their wishes, learning to listen and also learning to be sad, and learning that I feel my best when I'm dancing, or listening to music , or learning about music as well as cultures of the world in general. Having BTS's music throughout all of that felt like someone had my back.
I love listening to artists that make me fall in love with music even more to the point I go back to the roots of the genre or even to their inspirations and the foundations that made them get to that point.
Learning that music is a universal language, not judging people for what music they listen to and not listening to people who judge what music I listen to.
BTS have made me have an innumerable amount of Epiphanies and listening to people have Epiphanies because of them as well is so fulfilling and enjoyable. Thanks to Sleep for doing this podcast and doing a deep dive into the Nas-RM-BTS-NoMoreDream connections. I'm sure BTS would be delighted to know their message delivered to people like you who are passionate about hip hop culture and its foundations. Looking forward to more episodes. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Oh, and you probably know this, but in case you don't -- both Namjoon and Yoongi come from the underground hiphop scene in SK and they got a lot of shit for 'selling out'. But Yoongi was quoted as saying, he just saw a bunch of sad older men who were content living a crappy life and didn't really strive to get better to fulfill their dream, and especially coming from poverty, Yoongi didn't want that life for himself and his possible future family. He became an idol even though he didn't want to dance or wear makeup, even when he busted his shoulder, because his dream was to make it big. And he did. I feel like that part of No More Dream's lyrics is very much informed by that attitude. (He also addresses it in Interlude: Shadow)
Also you gave me goosebumps when you said you immediately thought of 'Youth' when first listening to No More Dream! That is such a big theme for Chapter 1 BTS.

  • @rkivelover
    @rkivelover หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Such a cool parallel of you to draw between N.Y. State of Mind and No More Dream, it's Namjoon's all-time favourite Nas song as well as the song that got him interested in rapping! He's rapped the first verse multiple times and talks about it like it was a seminal point in his life, as it clearly was for every hiphop listener who discovered it. The hiphop culture is so fundamentally important to BTS, not only as authentic musicians, but as kids who grew up poor and hopeless and afraid of the oppressive system they had unwillingly been born into the lower side of. Polarisation is and has for a long time been a serious problem in South Korea, particularly as a nation that has developed into a capitalist work-oriented environment so quickly. And yet despite the immensity of the pressure on the working class youth, BTS had the passion to say "Follow your dreams."

  • @em5522

One of the things that really attract me to BTS is how you can clearly see that they're connected to the music they put out. You can actually navigate how their thoughts and perspectives have grown, change, and branched out into new understandings from their music.
They retouch and expand on their perspectives of dreams and how dreams affects and reflect ppl with later tracks, with delving deeper later into the concepts of self-worth and self-love (Love Myself era) or how their views on the foundations of dreams can lead to all the trappings of growing up (Wings era), and which also lends into the reality of leaving youth (Youth era) and figuring out who you are (MOTS era).
And all of that showcases to me how their music is smt that is very true to who they are.
And then how much they really love and respect music is also another factor that make them worth getting into as musicians.
I've studied classical piano growing up, and my teachers have helped cultivate my love for understanding and learning more abt music in general, with its various cultures and history. So, I also really appreciate how you're sharing your own history and perspectives abt your craft and the music culture you're a part of.

They're holding the subjugators to the wall by mocking their language, especially the complacent patronizing language of the privleged, they're not blaming the youth for the very conditions institution forces them into. They're using their platform to speak for youth, not at them. 💜

    oooooo this was so interesting
i dont know if you scripted this or went off the dome but everything you touched on was so cohesively structured/organized and easy to follow
i feel like my appreciation for bts' music grows with every new vid of yours
it really is crazy to see labels try and learn from bts's success in the most surface level way
i dont understand how these producers and executives can look at the self biography that is bts's music career and think an aesthetic is what made them this huge.
i remember the wave of "self love" as a comeback concept so many groups attempted after the success of bts' love yourself trilogy and man the songs released felt so one dimensional and empty
yes loving yourself and self acceptance is a universal topic but bts didnt just say the lines "i was insecure but now i love myself"
they went through years and years of dissecting their deepest fears and guilts and flaws through several albums worths of songs to arrive at self love
bts are so specific and personal with their music
they understand that music with substance is music that lasts because it's that kind of personal and raw music that got them through their own hard times
when i heard you talking about how no more dream was largely directed at their peers it made me think about why i love their song spinebreaker
spinebreaker's lyrics call out the listener so directly and damn i wouldve felt so attacked by that song if i heard it while i was in middleschool haha but maybe i would have learned something too
wasnt planning on leaving such a long comment, i even looked at the comment section at the start of the vid was like "damn everyone's writing essays down here" lmao

This line really struck me, 'music with substance is music that lasts because it's that kind of personal and raw music that got them through their own hard times.' And the members wanted to make music that could do the same for others, music that could reach down into your soul and pull you along and up, and that is what many of BTS' songs do for me. They also wanted to be a voice for others, not just themselves, and No More Dream is that. That they chose to do this with their debut song is just another level.

Great first Episode! I really liked what you said about following the blueprint and not the esthetics. Being army I knew this has been going on a while from companies taking the wrong lessons from studying BTS' success but to hear a personal story from you on the subject still feels wild to hear. And you were able to explain well what's missing is looking at their heights now as a goal instead of looking at their roots or foundation that built them everything leading to that success. It's interesting cuz music labels like to pitch ideas or concepts to start groups or artists all the time but it should be surrounding the music first. That's where it all started for them and army, their music.
I enjoyed you breaking down references to other works and drawing correlations to what the songs are talking about. I still love and rock with No More Dream, the music draws you in but the message is really what grabs you. I was lucky in that I'd seen a video I think on Asian Boss channel about Hagwan or Cram Schools in S.K. before seeing that MV on 1theK so the lyrics resonated since I knew a little bit about the climate for students in S.K.

I really appreciate you putting out these thoughts. I totally agree with you and that's exactly what attracted me to BTS . I know there is other music, good music out there, good groups in S.korea, but the understanding of hip hop...loving the music and the messaging, no matter what genre , more than the shine it can bring.
I got to know them much later, just at the beginning of 2020, they were promoting MOTS7 and I guess that's why TH-cam kept putting it in my feed (I didn't even have an account at that time) but never clicked on a video until I saw an article about a sculpture of an artist whose work I knew. From there searching for that project of collaboration in various fields of art, hearing them, mostly RM talk about it... End then looking at their music .
So yeah... Difficult to see people don't really understand what BTS is, how it was done and even how who they are is what actually made the difference. That's why now one is like them, not even the other Big hit groups or big groups that now that kpop is more popular (and when BTS is not doing anything)make bigger numbers then BTS.

NMD is the song that hit me. In 2020, when algorithms already answered the question "what is K-pop?" they immediately offered BTS and when I said to myself that I probably wouldn't see anything more colorful, I saw this MV (fortunately with subtitles). I froze. How dare this young man ask me about my dreams? That's when I realized that I might have lost (or I´m missing) something,
since then I've been looking for it and I try to remind myself from time to time that one shouldn't stop dreaming at any age, even if it's OK not to have dreams (no, Yoongi, I don't agree with you so much on this) .

Your comment to Yoongi made me smile. I have thought much about his words, and I really think Yoongi is referring to a temporary state. Not everyone knows what they want to do or what direction they want to take at every point of their lives. I think he is validating that time. In a society where everyone is always striving and all seem to be moving forward, it can be very upsetting to not have a dream yet. But sometimes, a person may just have to do a bit of living first, and it really is ok to drift a bit.

I have always been impressed and gobsmacked that BTS was so fearless to debut with 'No More Dream' defying the idol song trends in 2013. Thank you for this... it's what I like about reactors who are musicians not only because they can understand the art of BTS but because they help us expand our musical knowledge, they instruct us and it's something I appreciate. With BTS I have learned a lot about hip hop and I have learned to appreciate the rap that previously evaded me completely and honestly it was not the first thing that attracted me to BTS but its vocal line, I always loved vocals and R&B but little by little the rappers caught me and I realized that rap can be deep, reflective, hopeful, critical, etc... but it still surprised me that in the group's solo stage, my favorite albums have been those from the rap line, especially those by RM... and I don't have a bias, I love and support them all equally but I didn't expect the rap line to conquer my heart with their music the way they did
Thanks for recognizing the talent of the group and for having put aside the prejudices that stop many people from giving the opportunity to genres that they do not know or those of which they have a preconceived idea and for that reason they only criticize without even having had the opportunity to know that music

I love this breakdown so much. And last time they tried to make the "next bts" ... they released "Jopping" which almost seems like an insult to a group that has had so much to say. They saw "Dynamite" and "Butter" did so well with it only have a positive and happy dancey vibe and forget that those who pushed "Dynamite" to even be heard were the ones listening to "Bapsae" and "No" before that. When someone who has something important to say and a respect for the manner they deliver it, its easy to see that songs with a less powerful message are still genuine and sincere, just serving a different purpose.

I mean sure their looks and style and talent contributed their success but those trivial things I'm not enough by themselves . It was really interesting hearing the reference/comparison between Nas State of Mind and No More Dream beat wise. There's so much creativity, expression of thoughts, ideas of what they wanted to say. The message they wanted to put out not only to themselves but for their peers and whoever was willing to listen.
Back when I heard their debut song for the first time, it was the beat that drew me in. The way they are rapping so aggressively, as if they were trying to shaken up and say "wake up ! There's a life to be living!!! instead of just cruising"
A message to the world, to the youth, that keeps echoing. The importance of having a dream, a drive, to be passionate, to not be subdued into an "auto pilot" way of living.
Anyways, thank you Sleep !! I'll keep checking out your podcasts as well as the reaction videos (which are really fun).

Imagine watching the baseball game, and you see your favorite player take the big swing, hear the crack of the ball and then someone changes the channel - thats what it feels like to make the big swing for your dreams and have to stop everything because of a disability - sure you can find out how the play went, but you will never have that emotional state back to experience it (I can judge my classmates careers to guess what could have been)
You talking about how dreams can change as you learn and grow

Appreciated this! And yeah, even BTS literally gets asked, who do you think will be the next BTS? To which they respond with, well, we're still BTS. LOL. So ridiculous and in such bad taste. I mean, if you are trying to be someone else or achieve what someone else is doing, then you are not being unique, honest, or yourself. If you make it BIG, you need to do it being yourself. The KPOP industry as a whole has been trying to emulate and create their own "BTS" for years now while literally keeping them off broadcasts and instigating smear campaigns against them. BTS seriously creating their own sound utilizing the HipHop that was obviously inside them, but combining the vocals and dance of the KPOP world. As a result they were shunned by both. The HipHop world considered them sellouts (falsely assuming they would no longer be part of the creative process as 90%+ of the KPOP industry do not) and the KPOP world shunned them (considering them to be too free and non-conformists of the strict and unrealistic "IDOL" standards). So they said we are going to be ourselves and do what we want and that's what they did. All of that comes from inside and isn't created. Their work ethic is insane and it took all 7 of them always committing to doing what was needed and supporting each other the whole time. Plus the incredible determination and commitment from Bang SiHyuk and the loyal team he was able to surround them with. And yeah, well, RM's insane lyricism.
Also... with dreams... as a 5th grade Science teacher... it is sad to see almost all the kids retreating into thinking of those "safe" careers already and very few dreamers or believers in themselves that they could follow their own dreams.
Thoroughly loved your breakdown of their first song. Literally called "No More Dream" yet, like you said, they are actually challenging the youth to Dream Bigger. Or to not give up on their own personal dreams to pursue expectations that family and societies force them into. I am so thrilled to hear you check out their lyrics. I thought you probably did, since you have such respect for them, but you're always just listening to the music. LOL. Which typically for me, it is both, but sometimes, I'll be honest, the music falls short but it's the words more than the music that makes a song no-skip for me.
And OMG yes! The STOP "almost to let you think" is just one example of how they truly utilize flows, styles, and sounds in the music to emphasize what they are trying to say. Their dance styles, their stages all versatile and change to effect the message. Look at Yoongi's entire DDAY tour as one of the best examples. While essentially putting an end to Suga and Agust D personas as separate; his stage literally is deconstructed too as the concert moves forward. I won't say more if you actually haven't seen it, but OMG. And the details in JHope's Arson... such simplicity but such perfection down to every detail. One of my favorites is one of their more poignant message songs in Baepsae with intentionally silly choreography... I mean when you get them... you see all the sarcasm and all the levels of meanings (in multiple languages, dance styles, music flow choices, all of it). They are seriously next level artists and talent and human beings. And I am truly appreciating your ethic as well. Seriously appreciate someone who checks out doolset. 💜 Hope your vision takes off and wishing you such success for you and your artists. Also, have you checked out RM's Do You? This is the one with Eng Subs... unfortunately, the official MV doesn't have subs, so you may have to do this with a filter. But RM did this 9 years ago. th-cam.com/video/rN0_2jyOgzg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OdQC-zMXWRdsr4pQ Think you'll like it. Written and produced by him. It's on his first mixtape called RM in 2015. He was 20.

Absolutely loved this. Thank you. Your knowledge of the type of music & culture BTS (mainly the rappers & main producers at that point) were influenced by, as well as the deep dive into their lyrics, your personal experiences/stories..and bringing it all together at the end🤌🏻 And phenomenal point about "the next *insert superstar*" nonsense.. People really do try to make a pocket-pretend carbon copy of the icing on the successful cake that took over a decade to bake. Just willful ignorance. smh
Also, your voice is really perfect for story telling 😊
