My father ran for congress twice against Democrat Harry Sheppard. He was passionate about Republican ideals. However, a decade later he sat in on a sociology class while visiting me at college. He became so interested in sociology that he went back to school for a masters in that subject. He then switched to the Democrats, appalling many of his friends and supporters. His explanation? The Republican world view was too cruel. I think of him often as the GOP erodes before our eyes, and the cruelty seems fundamental to this.
I grew up as a Republican and switched before I turned 18 (in 2000 during my junior year of HS; I turned 18 long after the 2000 election meaning I could not vote). I first voted at age 19 in the 2002 midterms and voted straight Democrat down the line to avenge Bush stealing the 2000 election from Gore.
An American friend of mine said, Republicans were a party of the classics. They were well read and were intellectuals before being politicians... I was like, Really? When? Until the 1960s. Maybe early 1970s. I was born in 1977. Now all I see is Majorie Toilet Green, Matt Gatez and Lauren Boebert. Once is a trailer park janitor, the next one traffics minor across state lines and the third one gives Handies in public... Republicans!!!!
What an interesting story. Sociology is a great social science. I earned a Masters in it too. I never got a job as a sociologist -- they only exist I think in the university setting -- but what I learned opened my eyes and allowed me to see things, particularly propaganda, that others swallowed. I was always able to find interesting work too. It's an area that is great for analytical people. Good for your Dad!

The GOP ideals could make some phenomenal figures. However, everything has both sides; the bad side of the GOP ideals is that just one wrong person in power can destroy everything it has built before.

Yes, but he's overlooking the rot of the R swamp gang started long before trump. Former R operatives who jumped from the party have said there as a dishonesty, cynicism, moral bankruptcy and traitorous conduct in that gang for a long time; it just went off a cliff with trump leading the spineless traitors there. Stuart Stevens wrote a book with that theme in the title: "It Was All a Lie: How the R Party Became Trump" in which he argued that many of the principles and policies the party leadership espoused were hollow pretense, a hoax, built on quicksand.
Michael Steele you know why you were replaced! Just look in the mirror 😮. Another thing! That black female host is embarrassing to hear and watch. She acts like she's taking to her corner peps. Not a professional or a good look. Grinning, skinning, loudly testifying, and bouncy in her seat.... Do better!
It sounds bizarre to hear her talk about unity and trump, when after kissing his butt, he fired her and said on national television that they don't want any Romneys in the party. She's been kicked to the curb by her abuser and sh's defending him. That's sick! And it certainly isn't unity.
This is the republican way. McConnell is endorsing Trump after Trump spoke racial slurs about his wife. Trump called Ted Cruz's wife ugly and every chance Cruz get he's kissing Trump butt.
He already had plans to install Lara to grift the RNC coffers.

The GOP brand is damaged beyond repair. Start a new party with a real platform and new leaders. They'll draw in conservative Democrats and Independents that wouldn't touch the GOP with a ten foot pole as well as sane Republicans.
I don't see it. They have been pandering to it post the 1960's. Someone like that was written on the wall. Then they start lashing out. Then you get Charlottesville, etc.
What I have been saying for what seems like a decade or so. They need to go the way of the Whigs. Especially when I noticed them being party over country around 2010-11. Or whatever year that was.

I agree with your wife. Michael only changed because republicans came after him personally and kicked him out as RNC chair. I know it sounds crazy but Trump is desperate and capable of doing something. Last debate he was diagnosed with COVID the next day as I remember. He would have loved to have given it to Biden. I was worried for the same reason as now.

The new sub genre of mainstream news Blaxploitation weekend shows is quickly becoming my favorite. Between this one and the one on CNN with Oprah's BFF and one of the most foul mouthed dudes to ever come out of the NBA, I'm more entertained than I probably should be.
Policy wise, I don't think I'll ever agree with Michael Steele. That being said, he has been consistent with his criticism of his party's deviation from its traditional values since before it was cool to do so. He deserves a lot of respect for that.

This was the "Blackest" news clip that I think I have ever watched and I loved it. But I am a Democrat and agree with everything RNC Chair Steele said. So it was refreshing to me.
