1974 summer, my first true love girl was moving away for 6 months...she came back and broke up with me. It devastated me for years, and 45 years later still makes me sad. They say you never forget your first true love...I’m here to tell you I’m proof of that. I met her this spring of 2020, and tho she looked great, I married the second love of my life and was better for it. This song brings me back to 1974 like it was yesterday in her yard hanging on a hammock together. I’m listening right now and I’m 18 again!

Jude Barnes ...It was a rather horrid life path. She married a man of color who she had a boy with, he beat her, got divorced, wanted another kid and got knocked up by another minority (that boy is now a pot farmer). She remains unmarried. She got her college degree in some nondescript degree but not in Child Psych like she wanted when we dated; she became involved in some sort of radio business and is an office manager (yawn).

For context, I had an outstanding stereo system. The first time two roommates and I listened to this, as the crescendo finale faded, followed by the last "Cuz it don't matter to me" and the song ended, we sat silent, mesmerized, a moment extraordinary enough to still be remembered roughly 45 years later. Thank you David Gates, as well as James Griffin, Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel.

I met the one. For 13 years we were together, last few years it just wasn't working out no matter what we tried we just couldnt move forward together anymore. It's painful, my heart is broken and I miss being us and all that we did and had hoped to do. I hear that life clock ticking all the time and wonder will we ever get back or perhaps God has another plan and will meet someone else just as special. Great songs really do talk to the soul and stir it up. Thank you David Gates and Bread.

I still love my first love from high school, who ran off with a 40 year old, when we were 18. Lila gave that old creeper more of the benefit of the doubt than she gave me. Still hurts, more than 30 years later. I thought she was made of stronger stuff. Lila's choice took away mine. I guess I really had no chance at all. I would go to the abyss for her, though. I would sacrifice my own existence for hers. Love the old girl, after all that is said and done, at the end of the day.

Yes this music should come with a warning for the extremely sensitive emotional person...I only listened to this today because I heard the last part on the radio and I hadn't heard it in while...I won't go into the details of why my 1st boyfriend sent a cassette tape with this song on it, years ago, but Bread's music is tear jerking for me as well. I can't listen to it without sadness coming up. Well try to find music that has a more uplifting effect, like Pharrell Williams song Happy maybe :)...Take care.

For everyone who ever let 'the one' get away, whether it was your choice, theirs, or mutual... this song sums it up. I still love her, and this post.

I definitely hear what you're saying, but a couple things: Don't take the words too literally. I think the bittersweet feel of the song and the last verse specifically show that deep inside of course he wishes with his whole heart that the one he loves and he could be together. I think he's just saying that his love for her and his wishes for her good persist even if they be apart. Even beyond the heartbreak.

I wish I knew how old is Dan. I think that he's younger. It did make sense back in the 70ies but maybe in this century it is a little difficult to understand.
Loving changes with time... it is part of the culture.

Hi Dan, I'm 51, she's 47...33 years ago she broke my heart and walked out of my life. 1 and a half years ago she re-entered it. Not in the same capacity, of course, but she came back. I absolutely grieve for " what might have been", all the time that's been lost to us. I found that my love for her is every bit as deep, strong, and pure as it was all those years ago. Perhaps deeper, stronger, and just as pure for she has grown to be a truly amazing woman. She loves me, but has not had good luck in any of her relationships since she left me. This too breaks my heart, if we couldn't be together I wanted her to be blissfully happy where ever she was. This has left the woman of my dreams unwilling to chance it again. Just saying I get where you are coming from. It's a bittersweet blessing to have her back, but not have her at the same time. I can only hope to be the kind of friend to her that she never wants to be without again. Good luck to you...Those are the ones hardest to let go

Thank you Dan. I was reading comments from another song by Bread and I started thinking if younger people can relate to these lyrics. It is difficult to generalize... I dunno.
I always feared to get apart for I saw at a very early age people hating and saying terrible things about the one they were married.
It didn't happen to me but circumstances separated us.
I totally agree with you when you say it "grows for getting to know each other and the memories you build".
