Great video, thank you. As a South African living on a fynbos farm in the Western Cape, I've got to say that your pronunciation of the Afrikaans words is just about the cutest thing I've ever heard. Bless you.
Imagine going for a hike and finding this freak yelling "What're you's guys doing? Eh?" at the ground. Also, we need a t-shirt of Joey yelling "look at'is Magnificent Bastard" at that tree.
This was facinating. More so because of the accent... one does not expect this accent to be so fluent and knowledgeable with the latin names of fynbos here in cape town.... hahahah! I'm blown away man. I learned so much! THANK YOU. YOU ROCK.
After watching these videos I no longer see an open brushy field the same way I used to. It's really a beautiful biosphere full of amazing diversity. Thanks for changing my mind!
Dude, it is a fucking blessing that you made a South Africa trip. For like 12 years I've wanted to have something to properly show me what the fynbos is like, short of going there, and this is it. Thank you. Feels like home (CA-FP) just in the wrong hemisphere with all the wrong species, haha.
You can imagine my delight seeing a Lobelia in S. Africa while mines in bloom in N. Georgia. Blows my mind! Very similar looking, continents apart. "How dey do dat?" 😂
Glad you got to visit kirstenbosch! So nice to see some of the unique flora in South Africa getting some recognition. If you get the time, you should also hike Cecelia forest - there’s a ton of indigenous carnivorous plants among the peaks of the mountain!
I won an Erica plukenetii in a raffle at the opening of Fynbos Life Nursery. Excited to see the flowers which should be opening soon. I bought several fynbos species endemic to the Cape Flats Sand Fynbos (CFSF) region from that nursery, very nice. Getting things started to restore the environment in my immediate area. I love the natural riches we have.
Spectacular plants & scenery there. So glad I got to appreciate it a little. Plants native to their region are a huge resource to protect, great good luck in your efforts!
Thanks for teaching me a new word (Fynbos) Tony and for rubbing my internal Darwin yet again. FYI the colors on the ground really pop in those grey skies.
I highly suggest that you visit the indigenous forests in Knysna south africa I live here and there are many endemic species that you would find fascinating and I would love to see you do a video on FANTASTIC content, thank you
@@eliseleroux2517 yes! it tends to be a wet climate with lots of rotting wood so quite a variety. Also many ferns, mosses, lichens and trees as well as orchids
It's amazing how different these plants look from their relatives in North America. Blueberry family plants that look like pine trees! Carrot family plants that look like kale... Bizarre!
Can we start the funding effort to get our guy back to Africa to check out some different areas. I hear it’s a big continent with lots of different stuff
If I'm not mistaken that season did a lot of shooting around the Western Cape of SA. If you watch Black Sails you'll see a shit-ton of this area as well.
OH HELLO AND WELCOME MY COUNTRY, SOUTH AFRICA! This is a crazy surprise! 😂😂😂 Fynbos (feign-bos) it's hard to convey pronunciation through comments You actually said Houts Bay correctly first time. 4:43 "The feign *BOSS* " 😂 Are those "lil bastards" are hyrex/dassies? Yeah I was on table mountain in September and didn't see any but if you go to Boulder Beach you can see some penguins and dassies for free 🙂👍 You can hike around the base of Table mountain somewhere, signal hill and lions head are good spots too for checking foliage I think. Glentana has an interesting line of trees I never knew about, it's very weird seeing thick "forest" in certain parts.
I can't get over how everything on the grade below the vertical rocks looks like it just got washed up from the bottom of the ocean. Or like the ocean receded and here is what survived. Replete with white, filtered sand making trails between things. There are places in the mediterranean that look this way, too. (But weird enough, the mediterranean was submerged.)
I'm always amazed at how much diversity happens in Mediterranean climates - like you could easily walk right by that and not realize how cool it all is! (My plant eco prof in college was a huge fan of fynbos plants, so now I'm wondering what she's up to. She'd adore this.)
God-damn. 😂😅 This is my turf and Chicago Family😉is right on Botanical crime scene. Finding the dirty little bastards hiding under a stone😎👀 Delightful!! Thank you. 🤣😂🤭
dude, you get around! my country of birth, so beautiful, raised in nth cali, on manzanita and live oak, but good to get some new info on the motherland lol, thanks!

I like how you are inserting still close up shots of the flowers. Really helps to get a good look at them. Thanks for everything.

It would be mind blowing to randomly see Joey in the wild.

That _Leucospermum_ was gorgeous.
Man, something about that terrain. Looks strangely inviting.
South Africa is "holy grail bucket list" stuff for me! So glad you made it!

@katiekane5247 the lobelia you find in gardens centres is native to South Africa. Been hybridized. But I find they look very similar
You, Sir, are the "Wandering Wikipedia". Well done. Love every second of your vids.
Apt moniker!

freakin delight!
It's so cool seeing him go places I went when I was there. He sees so much that I walked right past without knowing.
I could feel it when you said “plastic aquarium plant.”
Klipspringer, nice
I fell asleep watching this and woke up cheerfully cussing with a Chicago accent. 😉
I thought is was a Brooklyn accent ? He’s too much !
Hope you got a chance to document some Roridula, Drosera regia and Drosera cistiflora!
Nice.
i like you vids.

Safe travels, Joey!
did you see the shout-out/tribute by Nick Zentner?
That would be an awesome tag team right there! Nick and Tony double teaming the plants and rocks.

hey I heard that too
Hell Yeah we are back botany bros
What’s up Tony, would you consider doing a fan meet up while you’re down here?
Enjoy you more “in the wild” than in a botanical garden.
I wonder if he saw the very dangerous Cape Cobra???????

Lots of Pofadder snakes in that area. And I mean lots, you see them just after sunset crawling over the roads. Very dangerous.

And if you go to the Wild coast (old Transkei) you can find some of our local Pcillocybin mushrooms
