    For a long time, I just assumed that one’s spiritual father was their parish priest. It’s still a strange concept for me. I don’t currently have a spiritual father.

      The Latin role of Spiritual Director is very similar. He can be your parish priest, but it can, for a multitude of reasons, be prudent to be directed by someone who does not interact with you in the external forum. (Not the biggest deal in the world for most people, but for example: if you are a seminarian, it would not be right for the person in charge of whether or not you get ordained to be the person who has been hearing your confessions/giving you intensely personal Spiritual Direction [otherwise, you may not be open and honest with him]; or if you are a lay ecclesial minister at a parish like me--you may have things which would not be appropriate to talk about with your pastor/boss [feeling like your job isn't a good fit or you are struggling to love a particular coworker]--therefore you go to a priest who is available to work with your internal forum things.)
      The really important things are: 1. Being open and honest about what you are working through, 2. Being docile/open to listen to/act on direction, 3. You are being challenged but not overwhelmed.

    My spiritual father is a monastic in Wisconsin and I'm here in Louisiana so it's absolutely not necessary to have one in your local area.

    What Orthodox monasteries do you support in Eastern Europe? I find that the quality of products they make are far higher than the ones in the west.

    Thank for you this video Bojan. This is something I've been really struggling with as I'm working on converting to Orthodox. I've haven't found one yet, nor have I settled into a church or been baptised yet. I was starting to feel at bit dismayed about it, so this video found me exactly at the right time. You are right about everything happening when it needs to. Thank you for reminding me of this brother. May our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.

    I don't really understand this. I know this will come across as hypocritical because my spiritual father is not my parish priest but what is wrong with the parish priests? They are priests after all. The reason my spiritual father and parish priest aren't the same person is because I moved where I live to be closer to a monastery to discern if I want to be a monk or not. So I was given a spiritual father from the monastery. Even then though I didn't look for a spiritual father, he was assigned, but I can't go to the monastery every day because I don't have a car, so I go to a local parish. It just seems, well disrespectful to search the globe for a priest who suits you when God has provided a priest right there and you receive communion from his hand! Idk I'm not saying you're wrong brother, I just don't understand

    • @Anthony-zx8xq
      @Anthony-zx8xq 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealRealOK that was my point. You don't need to search the globe for a spiritual father when there's a priest right in front of your.

    Hey man - I love your videos! Sorry if you’ve already answered something like this; but, what are your thoughts on Eastern Rite Catholicism/Byzantine Catholicism? Is it an awkward point of contention for both Catholics and Orthodox or do you think it can serve as a strong point, fighting for reunion between East and West, etc.?

    • @milanavucicevic3500
      @milanavucicevic3500 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Considering your name is Herman I would suggest Saint Herman of Alaska for your Patron Saint. ☺️ Then you can celebrate your name day too like Greeks or Russians do. In Serbia, where I'm from, it's not common to celebrate name day because a lot of us aren't named by a saint. Instead we have a family Patron Saint and every year we celebrate him when it's his feast day. We call it "slava". You can also choose a saint that is close to your heart, that you like to pray to, that has helped you etc. You can have more than one Patron Saint. ☺️

    Is a spiritual father the same thing as a spiritual director? I often am told that I should find a spiritual director but I'm not sure how exactly to do that or who would even fit the bill...

    • @BanterWithBojan
      @BanterWithBojan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is, just in Orthodoxy the term is 'spiritual father,' whereas in Catholicism the term 'spiritual director' is more prevalent. :-)

      At least officially Orthodox cannot be Masons and it is cause for excommunication. The higher chapters of such orders are associated with occultism and eerily demonic rituals and esoteric vows and things you generally do not want to even think about.
