    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    King Henry (Eric Bana) makes an illicit vow to Anne (Natalie Portman), even as Mary (Scarlett Johansson) gives birth to his son.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Adapted from author Philippa Gregory's historical novel of the same name, director Justin Chadwick's atmospheric period drama follows the fierce competition between sisters Mary (Scarlett Johansson) and Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) to win the affections of Tudor king Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Anne and Mary Boleyn are under pressure from their father and uncle to help maintain the family's rich legacy and ensure their further prosperity by winning the affections of none other than the king of England (Eric Bana). But life in the royal court is far different than it was in the countryside where these two sisters were raised, and before long their bid to earn the love of the king has transformed two once-happy sisters into bitter rivals. At first, it appears that Mary has triumphed in winning the king's favor by becoming his mistress and bearing him an illegitimate child. Despite her early success, however, Mary has underestimated just how clever and cunning her sibling can truly be. Not only does the relentless Anne manage to edge aside her sister in the eyes of King Henry, but she also succeeds in averting his gaze from his wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon, as well. Mary is driven by genuine affection for King Henry, while her sister Anne has only kept up the charade in a desperate bid to become the queen of England. Now, the growing chasm between two sisters is mirrored on a larger scale as England becomes divided more than ever before. As the consequences of their actions threaten to alter the course of an entire nation, these two sisters will ultimately discover that the only place they will find true strength and loyalty is in family, and that no matter what the consequences they will forever be bound by blood.

      Its accurate to a point. He DID divorce Queen Katherine and sent her away from Court because he was so infatuated with Anne and he used the excuse that Katherine couldn't give him a male heir to justify annulling his first marriage. He also disinherited his daughter, Mary (that he had by Katherine). And then, he beheaded Anne for charges of treason and sleeping with her brother and because SHE couldn't give him a son either after she had several miscarriages. And according to history, he DID have an affair with Mary before he was with Anne....and they allegedly had two children (Catherine and Henry)....but whether that affair occurred concurrently with him lusting after Anne, who can be sure? There IS historical records that show that Mary was the ONLY Boleyn to have a happy life after her time in Henry's Court. She ultimately left Court and married William Stafford (which they mention in the book The Other Boleyn Girl, though their relationship is not as played up in the movie) and they have a child together as well.....much to Anne's rage. She withdrew to the country where she lived peacefully with her new family. I'm sure the movie probably tweaked a few details of Anne's story for the sake of drama.

He was the one who helped put everything into motion and encouraged Mary to be a mistress and then Anne to become queen, so the Boleyn's would have more power and lane. Then he threw her out and he knew those charges were false and he said she was guilty anyways, He did almost the exact same thing with Katherine Howard except she did have an affair while she was married to the king, but he eventually was executed for treason. Historians agree that neither of Mary Boleyn’s children were Henry’s. This scene is very dramatically impressive because it suggests Henry turned his back on his healthy male child out of love/obsession for Anne Boleyn. It’s pure fiction. In fact, Anne was not romantically involved with Henry until LONG AFTER his affair with Mary ended.
      If Henry believed Mary’s son was his, he definitely would have acknowledged him and perhaps even tried to legitimize him. Henry was desperate for legitimate male issue. He would not have abandoned a son.

      As far as I know there was only one official illegitimate son of Henry's and that was his son with Blout.i doubt that if Mary had a child it was considered Henry's. The second son as far as we know was Edward by his third wife Jane. Apart from that no I don't think that he ever had a child with Mary Boleyn. At least not officially recognized as such.

    • @IBeMelissa
      @IBeMelissa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@katerinaaqu I agree with you. It is not confirmed if Mary Boleyn had a child by Henry, though it is heavily speculated. It is definitely known that he had a son with his mistress Bessie Blount, who died in infancy.

    • @katerinaaqu
      @katerinaaqu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@IBeMelissa True it could have been rumored as such but since Henry never recognized it as such I doubt it was true. Henry would have no trouble recognizing an illegitimate son especially since he wanted to prove it was his wife's fault he had no sons and not his. By recognizing yet another male child as his would only prove his point. The fact that he didn't could only mean there was no way the child to be his (unless of course he never knew its existence)
      In any case this movie is a total mess anyway. The only accurate thing at least according to the documents we have, appears to be the wardrobe of the actors and the names of the characters.

    This is a movie, so no the characters were not quite historically accurate. Bessie Blount did indeed have a son before Mary had her children. Henry Fitzroy married and lived to be about 20. The King actually made him a duke and tried to arrange things so that he would have a viable claim to the throne. Fitzroy’s death definitely squashed that plan. The King had a few male children, unfortunately only one with his wife (Jane Seymour). The tough thing is that the women were used as pawns to gain wealth and influence. Families of the King’s mistresses often came away with some nice parting gifts.

    this movie is so historically inaccurate firts of the mistress that gave henry a son was called Elizabeth Blount, mary did have a child although it's not know if it was her husbands or henry and it was a girl not a boy. the affair between mary and henry was short lived it was just a trist like elizabeth b and many others, she was called the great prostitute for this affair, and he didnt meet anne months after mary left court

      Typical Phillpa Gregory. Entertaining, but fiction. This one is sad though, because it makes so many believe that Anne Boleyn was an evil monster, which she wasn't. She wasn't an innocent, but she wasn't guilty of the crimes she died for either and there's plenty of actual evidence to back that up.

    • @Tgogators
      @Tgogators 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed, many events are changed for dramatic purposes. It's only been documented that Henry attempted to nominate Henry Fitzroy when things had gone south with Anne and no male heir came about. But he did within a year after Anne's execution. Henry had numerous affairs, it was documented having a mistress while married to Anne but he backed away after it was advised that his activities may not please God/not to jinx her pregnancy. After Elizabeth, it's been documented that he secret sought advice on the ideal of leaving Anne without having to return to Catherine.

    While Catherine of Aragon has always been my favorite queen
    The diverse portrayals of Anne Boleyn as manipulative and ambitious like Portman’s or proud and witty who fell for Henry for real like Dormer’s are soo compelling
    Don’t like this portrayal though. I like to think she really did love Henry to a degree.

    History was made this day .( maybe not like this I mean it's a movie pov.) if he had not been so obsessed with Anne Elisabeth would never have been born and events that fell step into step would never have taken place. It's horrifying if you think about it how if historical figures madd us what we are who we are where we are today right this right this second . I am typing this on my iPhone and no Steve jobs no Kathleen jobs whom had got beat up by her baby daddy while pregnant with Steve of she had never left that one night no iPhone I would have to type on.( no the story bout Steve jobs is not real an example.)
