The work that is seen in some art galleries looks worse than what a five-year-old can do, and yet they are not rejected. Art is very subjective.

As an artist I can tell you that I have seen some of the worst paintings hanging in galleries. Whether or not they think you are good is irrelevant because most galleries are looking for nothing more than the latest flavor. Please don’t let this experience affect you. You are an artist. You create beautiful art. You sell your art. Enough said.

While I’ve always had a knack for painting, my family quite frankly told me that I wasn’t good enough because they were scared of me going to school for art and wasting money. It worked and I got a science degree. Fast-forward to now, I’ve finally started taking my art seriously and getting support for it!
Thank you for sharing, Katie. I look up to you and love your work!

Wow, they were unbelievably rude! You were so brave to even approach a gallery, I haven't plucked up the courage yet. :D
There's a sculptor called Sharon Griffin who went back to the same gallery like 5 times before they agreed to sell her work, but that gallery owner was actually good at their job and gave her feedback each time on how to get better. Now she sells stuff for thousands of pounds.

Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. Your art is amazing. Markets do very from town to town. What sells in a urban community may not do as well in a resort community. The beauty of our current time is so many artists can get exposure on-line.
The experience is not as great as meeting the artist in person but the artwork still gets out there. Thank you for making my world more beautiful.

Katie, how true your words are! Most of us creatives are so super sensitive to everything. Visuals, sound, light, darkness, smells, etc. But it's taken me so many years to finally figure out that sensitivity is what makes our art reach out to the passers by, some more then others, as you say. But I also agree 110%, that our urge to create is even stronger. Even if you only create for YOU. Great video Katie, and truly wise words to hear! Thank you.

I have personally been rejected by 3-4 galleries.
    Early on in my career.
10 years later I tried again in a different city. And they told me my work was really good. But it didn’t fit with their particular gallery and what they are selling…. And that happened several times as well.
But now I also have my own website gallery and Etsy shop.

Hi Katie. I have followed you here for a few years now! You’ve expressed here an emotional component that is powerful and personal. I think for the artist the expression of art is not a reflection of their internal works, it IS their internal world. When put out for judgement of others, we end up so vulnerable. In the extreme! I remember a family member responding to my work and saying, “well, art is an acquired taste.” What!?? Apparently not their taste. There is a small book called Art and Fear, which addresses the artist vulnerability. Very helpful! Thank you for this video. For being vulnerable in this space. I love your kindness and gentle expression!

Yeah. That was such a rude dismissal. All they had to say was, thank you for your time, but your work isn't a fit for our gallery. Or something like that. Galleries like that are probably awful to be a part of anyway.

  • @carlafranklin128

I believe that we, as artists, are a sensitive group! It makes us vulnerable. But on the positive side, we can chose to not take it to heart but also learn what can you do to push through that negativity. I was a victim of a narcisstic abusive husband for over 30 years. I have been free from that for about 10 years. It took a lot to "de-program" my feeling like I could not remember anything or do anything right. But through counseling, Godly wisdom from different people, I worked at getting healed from that !! You all that went through that with a spouse, family member or whoever, CAN heal. Every person has value. Not every person draws or paints to what others may like. But I know that whatever you create can be gorgeous and speaks from your heart!! You are a success then!! Do it and celebrate!
I am a colored pencil/pastel artist with pet portraits and I love it. I watch Katie, not so much as to learn painting, but her gentle nature and kind words are wonderful and helpful. You are an inspiration and I have watched you practically from your beginning as an artist...you have grown and expanded and are amazing and uplifting to the art world!! And we artists, need to stick together to encourage one another!
Take care everyone and God Bless you all!

You are right about not buying into someone who does 't approve. There are many who will love it and it's good to not give up. Loved this video.❤

Oh my goodness... I am so proud that you continued. Look at you today. Such an amazing artist and person who gives so much of yourself to help other artist get better. My experience has been my whole life. I was not seen as creative my sister was and sent to art school she was the 'artist' in our family. I totally stopped doing anything artistic at a very young age. I am now 54 and picked up a paint brush for the first time in almost 49 years, almost one year ago. My creativity was shut down my entire life. Almost as if I didn't know it was there. Well I finally started painting and honestly my big sister said to me the other day. "My god Dawn you are better than me, your style, your ability is so special. I can't believe we never new this was inside you. " That actually made me cry because I was seen by the person who was nutured her whole life to be The Artist. I felt very emotional about that and happy that she acknowledged. I am finding my way. I am very grateful to you Katie for the help on this journey.❤ ❤❤❤

I’m so sorry you had such a negative experience. I have gone through that also, except that the person at the gallery gave me some constructive feedback which has ended up being very helpful. It took a while to get back in the groove of painting. This year I have painted nearly every day, watched a LOT of tutorials and interviews with artists, and read a LOT of books. I realized I needed to paint for ME. If someone likes it-great. I feel much more confident and am feeling ready to get back out there.

You had a lucky escape Katie from two people who are not artists, but simply critics who are all about the money 💰 and don’t have your passion for art, or, have any of their own talent to produce beautiful art in the way that you do. It’s simply a case of envy and jealousy of the jolly green giant! They are a disgrace to every artist and their skills to create magic. Keep going everything happens for a reason. Your art is above and beyond your local greedy so called gallery in its dark basement!!

Thank you Katie for producing this brilliant video. Your story of rejection and how you over came it will be incredibly helpful and inspirational to all artists out there. I could see how difficult it was for you to be completely open retelling a very personal experience, so thank you again for sharing.
I am a self taught artist who really only started to rediscover my passion for art after retiring from 9 to 5 office work. I am not aiming to make my art into a business and so I am lucky that I do not have the same pressures on me to be successful . However I do occasionally exhibit my work which I have never managed to sell. So I can imagine how it must feel for anyone trying to make a living from their art. When I collect my art after an exhibition, I remind myself:
How much I enjoyed the process of creating art.
That everybody has different taste in art that they would have on their walls at home.
Not everyone can afford to buy art but get a great deal of pleasure from looking at it, ( including me).
Just because it didn't sell any, doesn't mean I am not an artist.
Keep on producing inspirational video's, they are appreciated.

Thank you thank you!!!! I appreciate your sharing your experience with us. I've always enjoyed following you and just recently joined one of your art classes on how to paint roses. ❤ Last Christmas I had my paintings in a gift shop it was my first adventure showing my art in public. The store owner told me my paintings were pretty but on one of then pointed out that the Sun that I painted in one of my painting looked like a 2-year-old did it and that it wasn't going to sell for the price I had on it. She told me nobody is going to put that in their home. I told her well the sun is like that because I was trying to achieve a different look I'm more playful look. I said my art isn't going to make everyone happy, but it will resonate with someone. She said well I don't know of anyone that would hang that in their home you have it way too expensive. I lowered my prices but I took that painting out fixed the Sun and gave it to one of my best friends. She loves it! I've had other little jabs here and there too. It doesn't stop me though I will always always create paintings! I feel like I'm getting better I've only been painting for 2 and a half years. It gives me so much joy to paint and I don't let the negatives get me down. Looking for a shop and eventually a gallery to sell my art as it is very hard for me to sell it online. I had two of my friends that saw it online buy for me however, but never a stranger yet.

Thanks for sharing your story. Your art is amazing. I faced rejection with songs I had written in the music business for 18 years, and then I had one song recorded by a major label recording artist. Doors slowly began to open, publishers started accepting my songs, but I didn’t have any other songs recorded. Five years later I walked away from the music business and never showed songs I continued to write, again, until this year, 40 years later. As far as my paintings, I haven’t had the nerve to show them to any galleries or at festivals. I did donate one of my bird paintings to a a silent auction at the local wild bid rescue, and the only person to bid on it was my husband. It now sits proudly on my studio wall. Because of those years of rejection in the music business, I don’t know that I will ever be able to reach out to galleries or do festivals. I paint for me and share how I paint on my channel here. BTW, I’m an HSP, as well. 💖

I have had this happen to me in the last month or so and it hit me harder than I expected. I have done many art fairs in the last year, and I have gotten used to a very big split in people visiting my booth - I am a more gothic themed artist and my stuff is admittedly creepy (not gory) and it's not for everyone and I'm totally ok with that! But I have worked really hard in the last 8 years or so to improve my art skills, so I felt comfortable applying for a large grant recently and I also applied to an art show that is huge in my area that I've been accepted into before. And I was rejected from both. It stung, for sure because I put a lot of thought and effort into the application process. Rejection as an artist is hard because you really do take it personally.

I have a very different experience regarding my art. Everyone always praises my work. I even had a gallery ask me to join... Back in 2004...my husband thought joining was a bad idea... He died in 2007 and I was abruptly pushed into survival mode and entered corporate for the next 14 years. I eventually escaped the corporate world with the dreaded virus and focused on painting. I even got accepted in a gallery, not painting what I like to paint. Never sold anything... Presently I am working on a portfolio to once again approach galleries. But honestly, I give my paintings away to the first person who I realise absolutely loves the piece. My issue is that I have lost my marketing confidence and somehow my computer literacy on some fundamental level. But I continue with my passion, wildlife art. I guess I need to rebuild my self confidence, which I am working on. Thank you for opening a conversation about this very real issue artists deal with ❤

I’ve been creating art all my life, since childhood. I majored in Graphic Design. But as an adult, I turned to painting and have been experimenting with techniques since 2006. I was rejected by one gallery that I approached. They weren’t even interesting in seeing my work. But that didn’t change who and what I am. I just kept doing my thing. I actually have solo and group art exhibits online in a virtual world where people from all around the world have access and I’ve gained a following. I’ve been doing that for 15 years. So confidence in my art is there for me. But replicating the same success in the brick and mortar world is different. It’s all about marketing or the lack thereof.

I have not approached an art gallery and I know of many people who discourage to do so. They (galleries) tend to be in it for the money and you end up with the short end of the stick. And as your experience shows…it’s all so subjective. People will be people with their own opinions. It says more about that person than it says about your art.

I do t sell my paintings but when friends, family, coworkers see my art and they don’t say anything or comment things I didn’t expect…I tell myself who cares? They’re jealous.

I'd run across a similar kind of rude reaction from art instructors while in college. It stayed with me for decades. There is so much pretentious snobbery in the art world! You have to be prepared for this. Being an artist is like needing to have multiple personalities. You need to be sensitive enough to create meaningful art, yet tough enough to withstand the rejection and negativity towards your work. Keep making the art that is meaningful to you and don't let the detractors crush your spirit.

Sounds to me like those gallery owners were just snobby a$$hats! I wish galleries wouldn’t do that, it’s completely unnecessary. It’s definitely all based on one person’s opinion. One person may hate a painting and another person may love it! Thank you for reminding me of that.

Rejection is part of the deal, we all go through it. As an active Artist and Photographer since 1976 you kind of get a thick skin after a period of time.
Worst case senario for me was a Major Fashion and Perfume Company got openly insulting when seeing my images to the point I thought they were literally looking for a fight and for me to start throwing furniture or something. Best Stories are when another Major Fashion Company with a solid reputation that goes back nearly 100 years wanted my images for their Perfume Campaign. Another great Story is when a well known Film Maker bought 8 of my paintings at a local Exhibit, he will show them at his Gallery in Paris in early 2025

Great video great topic. I really enjoy all your videos and the personality and the energy you put into them. This did happen to me in my late teens. It wasn’t about my artwork. I didn’t even know about art. It was about my education and the person said that is Ludacris. What I learned from that experience was just be careful who I share my hopes and dreams with.

I was in an art show. Had several persons that really liked my work. I even sold 2. There were 10 there. I was discussing g a piece with someone and caught the tale end of a comment. They were remarking on how I framed my work. That comment hurt because the frames weren't cheap. The comment was from my brother in law who had always encouraged me. I was devastated. I still create and am getting ready for a one man (woman) show coming up at our local library. He still encourages me and I've never said that I overheard him. My sisters both know though.

Less about a no from a gallery, but I never even tried a gallery or fine art route because growing up when I said I wanted to be an artist, friends/family/teachers would say things like "yeah, but what will be your 'real' job" or "what's going to be your backup if it doesn't work out" "How will you make money?" etc. It really made me feel like it wasn't a legit possibility. I needed a "real" job, 9-5 kind of thing. I went to art college for animation because it would get me a "real" job (it didn't). Then art education degree to become a teacher for a "real" job. Now, 15 years later, I'm trying to finally pursue my own art career on my own terms. Social media and people like you really show that it is possible. Something I didn't have 20 years ago when I was a teenager.

This is why there's not point asking to see someone's work in person, unless people want to verify that the work in-person looks as good as it does online. It's just awkward for everyone involved!

If you paint or draw you are an artist. If you write you are a writer. Opinions are subjective and are sometimes made with a lot of prejudice because of taste.

  • @MrRosebeing
    @MrRosebeing 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I wouldn't dream of mocking someone for their artwork. Artists, much like writers and anyone else that puts time into a craft may spend hours, weeks, months and even years creating their work.
If asked for your opinion then give it, but you can be kind as well as honest. If not asked then don't feel you have to give an opinion at all.

Sorry this experience was so negative and I commend you for sharing your experience. Maybe you could have asked why. Sometimes the work is just not the right fit for their clientele. It has nothing to do with your vision or quality of your work but it just doesn’t fit in their vision. This happens all the time. Do your homework next time before approaching a gallery. Look closely at the work and artists they represent. This will give you clues as to whether or not they will respond to you in a positive way.

You receive a rejection from an art gallery? You are on a good path. A lot of artists received rejections from galleries, contests...another question does your art fits to this gallery? Look at the paintings and the artists they represent. I am an abstract and mixed media artist this means some galleries have no interest for me. I wish the best NEVER doubt of your self you are an amazing artist.

Seems the owners of most smaller places have a certain taste, and maybe they don’t want to accept work they don’t personally like. Maybe look for places that sell work in a similar style to yours, they might be more likely to give you a chance. I paint local landscapes and wildlife, so I looked for galleries and shops that sold the same. You also have to consider the market, and that some people only want what they think will sell in their area. But definitely don’t give up, there are a lot of places that will give you a shot, you just have to find the right place for your style.

If you love painting I don´t see any reason why you should stop. Don´t. We are not destined just to do the art that galleries want. Do it for yourself.
