My guess is that the grandparents were actually paying the rent on the place with their Social Security. When her grandmother died they couldn't pay the rent because they weren't getting her social security anymore.
Probably but I think the funeral expenses were likely a factor if MaMaw didn’t have life insurance. . She died in November. They didn’t stop paying until February.
You could tell that the defendant was dancing around the judge instead of giving her direct answers. Yeah, she owes the rent. Also, if she paid the rent, she should've provided proof. If she can't present her evidence in court, then the action didn't exist.
I hate it when renters assume they own the rental property and make major changes to the house. Turtle boy Defendant is a puppet, he's pussy whipped. His wife does all the talking and all the decision making in that relationship. The Plaintiff is a nice guy and he didn't deserve all this stress from these bums.
Obviously, the Grandparents paid the rent. Making excuses at her age is pathetic. She tried to make it sound as if they were taking care of the Grandparents, when it was likely it was the other way around.
You can rent an older small house in a small town or unincorporated area in the South for like $700 to $900. It was probably $600 when this was filmed. I know you are Canadian so maybe you can’t detect these people are American Southerners.
It’s not that old, maybe the last 2 years or so. Renting in the US is generally cheaper than in Canada. Even in NYC my rent for a 1 bedroom coop apartment is less than 1.5k
something doesn't add up here. They didn't move out in the middle of April, they moved out April 4 and I am pretty sure the landlord and told them that was fine. The landlord didn't show any damages at all, so if anything the deposit should have been applied to the rent that was allegedly owing. The defendants problem was poor record keeping on their part and being too trusting. I've known landlords like this that will give you the "well that's fine, don't worry about it" thing, then turn around and sue you. There is no way the landlord let them stay there for 3 months without paying rent, then had all those huge damages.
@@cb5156 She didn't because she said they owed 3 months rent. She applied the deposit to his alleged damages. I am surprised she never asked if there was a walk through since he is claiming damages. When she asked about that, he quickly starting backtracking and stumbling over his words about "well there was just some trash to remove so its no big deal". There is no way they painted the entire interior of the house, did repair works (none of which he disputed) and then he also had damages. I think the plaintiff is trying to get over. I think the DID pay rent in February (but they have no proof) and that the landlord was going to apply the damage deposit to March's rent (hence the 'just paint everything'). It makes perfectly good sense that they would have such an arrangement. JJ was being snotty for no reason
@@jdsiv3 I agree . Did you notice that he apparently combined his own trash with his tenant's when he did some work on the place after they left? He started to explain to JJ but she didn't want to hear it and never looked at the trash bill. The landlord just said he'd be satisfied with $595 and she gave it to him. That's a lot of money for a trash pickup. Maybe she was adding in their staying 3 days into April, she's a stickler on that (though prorating 3 days rent comes to less than $60.) JJ was really getting extra bitchy around that time and it shows in her rulings. I wonder if this was when she learned the new bosses at CBS were not renewing her golden contract.

So very sad 😢
Aah yes, that would explain it, makes sense, cheers 😊

@@anndeecosita3586 She says they paid in February just didn't have evidence of it (which is very possible given the method of payment).
Probably
Q: "When is rent due?"
A: "Well, it's not _past due_ until the 8th"
I can't stand people like that.
Totally could never give a straight answer. Arrrgh!
She thinks she’s being sneaky
After granny passed, they had to move. Wonder if they depended on her income for rent. Anyway, that smiling hubby was a big help.
LOL!
She really thought she was going to win. 😂😂😂😂😂
kk ...
What a big help her husband was😂😂😂😂😂😂
Her mouth is big enough for the both of them.
He knew she was wrong.
JJ should've asked the husband to sit down.

I got the impression that hubby knew his wife was lying and trying to pull a scam.
$500, $400 rent⁉️😳 Where⁉️
😂😂😂ok
IKR 😮
When I saw that judge judy ponytail, I was like wow!
In my state it’s $1600 and up . That’s 4times the amount . Which state is this
Exactly!!!!
Squatters and Their Sob Stories for a thousand please, Alex.
I kept waiting for JJ to say, "look at me, don't look over there!"
Defendant is kinda person who lies in order not to tell the truth 😅
Yes, and she doesn't tell the truth so she can lie instead.
Two grown people who cannot come up with $595 rent. Sad.
Very.
Maybe in her fantasy head she believes what she is saying 🤣
Past due on the 8th is GENEROUS!
Defendant appears so confident, wonder how she would behave if she weren’t lying. JJ was too soft on her
Where the hell they live that rent is so cheap
Sounds like Kentucky.
It's North Carolina as was clearly depicted in the video clip...
@electricboogaloo347 calm down. North Carolina an entire state. Smdh
Mobile home?
Judge Judy rules!!!
At least the defendant’s husband is wise. He kept his mouth shut.
400 and 500 dollars for rent, where do they live????
They're probably renting a room in someone's home now that granny passed away and isn't paying the rent anymore.
That couple are a pain, she's evasive

Where do these people stay ? My tenant pay 1500 for a small studio
I’m waiting to hear the husband speak…if she lets him speak.
Maybe he squeak instead of speak. 😊
I can’t stand ungrateful people. I can’t stand liars specially liars in court. You’re an old ass, adult act like one

Ugh I hate when litigants just can't answer the question.
100% they were depending on the grandma's social security income.
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 what a joke there actually the husband never opened his mouth we know who the boss is
Did they literally just come on TV to have Judge Judy pay their rent??
In what fantasy world can your rent a house for $500? In Canada renting a whole house would be like 3-4k
These are older episodes.

@EliF-ge5bu This is from the late 2010s so last 5 years at least
I love my JJ lunch fix
Her man didn't say a single word lmao
Might not have anything toothful to say.
He didn't need to say anything..... she lost the case easily on her own.
Prob saw JJ before and new better.
😂😂 Guess who's silent at home?
He would not be able to keep up with her lies...or understood them.
Q: When is your rent due?
A; Well, Jesus of Nazareth was 33 when he died, so 9 years from now we'll have to paint.
afternoon lunch crew!

JJ didn't ask what they do for a living. I would like to know.

I wonder if JJ didn't consider it as she stated there was no counterclaim from the defendants for the deposit.
Several States have laws prohibiting deposit monies from being applied to rent owing.
