It is symbolized as a labyrinth. Which is why the background changes after the smoke scene. It is meant to show the feeling of isolation and making it literal to emphasize the point.

If you watch at the time stamp he says the e in see when the animatronic in the video is saying "story" not "see". I was just pointing that out cause it was a little slip up that I thought was funny.
