    Miniature painter here:
    First tip: use your pinkie as support for the hand that's painting. I usually rest it either on the mini or on my other hand while I paint. You can also brace your forearms on the edge of the table.
    2nd tip: when I'm painting really small stuff like pupils or fine detail I paint in my natural respiratory pause. This is a fancy term for the natural pause that happens after exhaling. So your not technically holding your breath but your not moving from breathing.
    Love the video! They turned out great as always! Good luck with future schmol (small) painting 😄

      I hadn't thought about the respiratory pause! That'll help my own linework so much, thanks! I'd sorted out the stability (I try to form a triangle between the pad at the base of my thumb, the tip of my pinky, and my working surface) and the brush styles that work best, but was still getting small wobbles, no matter how gently I tried to work.

    Hey Kaypea,
    first of all, these two bois look absolutely STELLAR!
    as for the painting:
    - As other people have said already, getting some tiny detail brushes is a huge help with trying to paint neatly. Most important for this (imo) is that you get brushes with a sharp tip, as those are best for small scale work. (One thing to note, the brushes ain't everything)
    - What really helps me when I'm trying to paint miniatures is resting/steadying my painting hand on other surfaces. depending on the situation this can be my table, or my other hand/arm. this really helps against very shaky hands.
    - Final tip (if you don't already) Thinning your paints down a bit can also help with detailwork. Paint that flows does not need as much pressure to leave the brush. The less pressure you apply, the neater your work will be.
    - And, as always, practice will get you better results over time
    Hope that's a bit of a help,
    and I really look forward to seeing whatever project you've got planned next!

    I’ve been painting miniatures for over a decade. The real trick to painting small is making sure your pinkie or ring finger is firmly planted to create stability for the shaking hand. It can help a lot to anchor your elbow against your body, versus chicken winging it. Also, best to make precise strokes when breathing out. Your body moves less :)

    I've just gotten into tiny painting, and teeny tiny brushes make such a difference. Especially for little shapes and patterns I like tiny thin brushes with short bristles, and I've thought about getting a magnifying glass. For lines/stripes longer bristles (still skinny brush) and confident strokes holding the brush farther back helps me!

    • @MsMorri

      I'd like to know, do toothpicks work/help?

    • @sidnope5524
      @sidnope5524 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@duskstorm3560 didn't help me because I prefer having a longer grip so I can use the palm or crook of my hand to stabilize.
      I have used long orange wood sticks tho, (usually used for nail/cuticle care) with one pointy end and one wedge end for dotting and for cleanup.

    • @ifailedmywillsave
      @ifailedmywillsave ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@duskstorm3560 For toothpicks, it kind of depends what you're trying to do with them. I find them really useful if I want to do the edge around the pages of a tiny book, for example, because I can moderate the paint and the location a bit better than with a brush. But I have a hard time using them to do eyes! Which is one of those things it's supposed to be great for. So it's very much a personal preference, but absolutely something to be tried out. :)

    Edit: About miniature painting, nail art paint brushes are my best friends! While customizing dolls I found out that gor me, small details look cleaner when I use watercolor or gouache and sealants instead of acrylics, it is way easier to deal with(easier to clean too!), so I believe paints that are more fluid! I only have regular ones so I can't confirm.

    From what I learned from my hobby of resin art: ground your elbows by rest them on a cushion or something so that they won't move then just relax the rest.

    Your "Copy and Paste" armature moment reminded me of a time, when I was a teenager, that I was shopping in Walmart with my mom. We were in the checkout line and my mom, when she saw Root Beer in the cart of the person behind us, remembered we forgot Root Beer. I was a writer and on the computer a lot, so my first thought was to just copy and paste the bottle in the other cart. Did I realize immediately that the world doesn't work that way? Sadly, no. My brain actually took the time to look for a keyboard! THEN it realized the mistake ONLY when there was no keyboard nearby. 😄

    Tiny Detail painting tips: Thinner paint, shorter brush bristles (Not just thin bristles, the shorter they are the less the wiggling the bristles transmit, sure, but you need longer motions for things to transfer versus shorter bristles that go exactly were you make them go), and using your pinky hold your painting hand in a steady position relative to the object you're painting. (putting and keeping your pinky against the mini holder or something, etc. lifting your hand away should only be done when you're sure about the shape.
    If you have tremors in your fingers, there's LOADS of methods to help mitigate that, especially if you have a steady wrists (you can use a rubber band to help steady your hand relative to you wrist for example, but putting it around your wrist, twisting into a figure 8, then looping the other section around your lower two fingers)

      Another trick for shaky hands is to hold your mini in one hand, brush in the other, and press the heels of your hands together so that they sort of shake at the same time and in the same way, so the brush and the mini are still synced up. It's hard to describe, but I've found that it works surprisingly well.

    my sister paints miniatures and i've done a couple of them, it pretty much comes down to a single hair paint brush (just a slight exaggeration but not much), one of those light magnifying glass stand things, and some kind of clamp holder thing to hold them still. and a very steady hand, it also helps to brace your painting hand (i use my pinky).

    Painting tips:
    1. Doting tools for tiny details are your friends!!!
    2. Your hands are going to shake, it's life. Put your project on a stand, don't hold it in your hands, and hold your brush close to the head when painting.
    Hope that helps!!

    I make small sculpted creatures for my etsy shop (MythicalClays) and sometimes when I need to paint lines I also hold my breath, tho mainly so that my hands don't shake. I find that flat brushes are the best for painting large areas and teenie tiny long skinny brushes are the best for any sort of detail
