So I'm sittin' in the meadow at the 'Strawberry Music Festival' up in Yosemite California several years back waiting for the first group to kick off the four day event. They introduce the first group and out walks two 13 years olds, a 14 year old and Dad on stand up bass. I think to myself..."oh this should be cute". They stole the show! They were just as accomplished then as they are now. One of the most defining music moments of my life.
How on earth can (at the time of writing) 20 people dislike this? Even if you don't like the genre, this must be one of the top five of all time examples of brilliant, energetic and highly skilled playing, dazzling solos and musicians with great passion and joy on stage. And I'm a fairly accomplished fiddle player myself, I know real talent and skill when I see/hear it.
Those solos are so sick, they're demented, particularly the guitar and mandolin ones! I love the way they go so far from clichés, and even tonality, before working their way back to solid ground, as it were. The whole band is amazing.
Holy f that was tight. Gotta hand it to these guys. I'm a metalhead drummer, cookie monster screaming dude who blasts the most unholy, brutally heavy metal music 24/7. Total black skinny jeans, oversized tank top with branch font logos, long messy hair, Mitch Lucker wannabe, "it's not just a phase mom" type of guy. But man, when I watch this video it's goosebumps. My old car's stereo jammed shut with the Punch Brothers' Phosphoresent Blues CD in and I was legitimately bummed that I couldn't get it out. In this 2020s era of country music being cool again cause of the Texas country guys like Morgan Wallen and Tyler Childers, I get some clout for being a fiddle player haha. But bluegrass is still where it's really at. Metal, bluegrass, and swing jazz are genres that allow wild, improvised, super energetic music. They're the most "anything goes" types of music, and I've got some of the best memories playing all 3. I wish there was a bluegrass equivalent to the moshpit for me to let out the adrenaline I get from it haha. But yeah, Chris Thile, Nickle Creek, Punch Brothers, I'm With Her, and all the other Flecktones-esque bluegrass is lowkey the shit. It's a whole underground scene waiting for the young generation to rediscover it.
Chris Thile should get both the best mandolin and best drummer award.
I miss them terribly. Saw them several times live and even today, they are still one of the best shows I've ever seen. They're always welcome in Lexington, KY...please come back! Much success to each of them, Chris, Sara and Sean.
HOLY DAMN!!! WHAT A JAM!!!!
Whole tone, Diminished, and Super-Locrian licks. Bluegrass for people who like jazz. Love it.
His voice is breathtaking
this song is so much freaking fun to sing!
This is one heck of a jamfest! A showcase of talents!! Love this group!
Nickel Creek is amazing it is one of my favorite bands
Ohh Chris Thile and nickel creek..so amazing cannot wait to see them on their new tour
Love the talent these kids have! Brings back memories of the bluegrass band I played in for a number of years called South Fork. Great music - love the energy and the amazing musicians that they are.
Love this song! I miss this band. Saw them a few times in concert when I was in High School. They are great! I always loved, in live versions, how he sings Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues in the middle of this song. Awesome!
That is the most insane mandolin solo ever. Chris is such an incredible player. Gosh....
first discovered Nickel Creek in '95... have often wondered, since then, why Chris Thile can't seem to stand still while playing the mandolin... til me son started playing. now i get it ;)
This is freaking amazing
Reminds me of my great grandma Elsie. Thanks!
I'm rediscovering folk and other real music. Nickel creek has always been in the family. Mumford and sons are something special. The corrs are lovely. I love it all.
Oh my gosh, this song popped up on my Alexa just now. I was just a kid when I first heard it on my iPod. Brings back so many memories.
Ripping! Billy Strings and Greensky Bluegrass good! Wow,I love Nickel Creek that much. TY
I was there! Very cool to find this.
All time favorite song as a kid. Listened to this song every time got in the car with my dad. Brings back memories even if it was just the 90s. :P
This is my Happy Music!
Everybody knows how awesome Nickel Creek sounds live!
SO... when the hell are they going to make up their mind and release some proper live footage on DVD? There must be some way!
I use to listen as a kid to the spinners version of this all the time. Brings back such memories!
I guess you could call it Bluegrass plus. It starts and ends like a Bluegrass song, but goes to different places in the middle. When musicians experiment, they often don't really pull it off - they bite off more than they can chew. But this piece was tight. They had it under control and it was great fun.
Nickel Creek is awesome!!! Just love their music.
It seems like they put a different spin on this song every single performance. I love it!
my choir teacher showed my class this song and we all loved then she retired and left a packet of somges that we all liked and i just now found the packet and i am listing to all the songs and this was one of them
I grew up on this song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me too I learned it the proper way, by word of mouth from the older generation. And I learned the Dylan from a crackly old piece of vinyl
OMFG! Don't know whether to laugh or cry. Just so good.
Wow, amazing! never heard this long version before.... These guys are incredible
I sent this song to my mom for mothers day cuz this is our song!
Oh, man, I just came on hoping to see them do this song like I saw them at MerleFest. I never thought I'd be able to see the exact performance! TH-cam, I love you...
Was looking how to spell "nickel" and up pops a listing for these folks. Good sound. I would have appreciated back "a few years ago" when I was in my Blue Grass phase of music. Still enjoyed The Fox
i havent heard this in forever still 5 star
Me too! i have great memories of riding in the car and singing to this stuff, thinking it was the most rocking music in the world. then i discovered muse.
Old school. Still love the Burl Ives version. So glad Nickel Creek is keeping this classic alive.
I remember when this album dropped. Pure fire.
The "Light house's tale" is also one of his best songs, but if you listen to the lyrics it is realy sad
They say that Fox was really...
Fantastic.
An absolutely incredible performance?!!!
Absolutely agree. Definitely the best solo on that album in my opinion.
my older brother showed me them and they are amazing!!
Omg that amazing moment
sweet man thanks, it sounds crazy
There's a lot of raw talent on that stage.
This band is awesome!!
I hate myself for not knowing about this band sooner. As soon as I get the chance. I will own all 3 of their albums.
i actually heard this song from a sonic vid. this is freaking amazing. im am a fan now
He has so much fun!!!
Wow... are there even words. They take this song to places my chromatic mind never dared to go.
amazing work 💝
Insanely great !
i havent heard this in forever
My class im in year 5 had to learn this song and sing at the grimsby auditorium but we sang it differently but great song though I love it!
I first heard this version like 10 years ago. I didn’t listen to this kind of music and thought it was the best mandolin solo I’ve ever heard. Since then I’ve gotten super into bluegrass and even learned how to play mandolin. It’s still the best mandolin solo I’ve ever heard.
@bd1655 Chris (the lead singer on this one)'s dad bass played on the Nickel Creek album that this song was included on. He also played live with them up to that point. The guy on stage with them here is someone else though.
@phoenixvalley I just recently caught the bug too. Now 90% of my ipod is either Chris Thile's solo project (How to Grow a Woman From The Ground), Nickel Creek, or his newest project Punch Brothers. I find they pair well with the new bluegrass-folk infused, yet more mainstream Mumford and Sons. I seriously can't get enough of this stuff.
@bd1655 Not in this set, but in earlier Nickel Creek sessions, I think Scott Thile actually was the bass player. That´s Chris´ dad.
Hard to believe this is Sara Watkins in this video. Saw her in another video filmed at the Grand Ole Opry as part of a group performing with Vasser Clements and she really looked frumpy. Here she is a real cutie!
Their Back !!! Just released a new album at the end of 2014.
Fantastic!!!
AMAZING!
Back together and back on tour!
@bd1655 The bass player on this set was a very talented Nashville musician named Byron House. He's also on some of the Andy Leftwich videos.
I am learning this on the mandolin. I have mixed feelings about that first solo...
I caught the so-called "bluegrass bug" while listening to Nickel Creek. I purged my ipod of most of my rap/hip-hop crap and added more bluegrass and folk music, such Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss, and the The Duhks.
4:06 Chris Thilie's solo.
Chris is SUCH a ninja on the mandolin that the entire band can stop playing for his solo safe in the knowledge that he won't fluff a single note :)
This is what I grew up listening to...my parents were huge fans. I decided to revisit their music and im more in love... Why did they have to break up?
He's old enough to be my younger brother! I'm 59! Do you have Sirius/XM satellite radio? If so, does your dad listen to Cousin Brucie on Saturday night? America's oldest and greatest disc jockey.
soooo great
You hit the nail on the head with that one. Too mucho beero
awesome....... freaking awesome...
It;s a shame... I saw them in Wilkesboro NC when they were a young band and again In Boone NC great band...I think "stardom" made them get attitudes.... They were an unbelievable band TOGETHER....good luck .......
unbelievable......enough said...
MY FAVORITE SONG EVA!!
Respect for the one who can give me the lyrics of the entire song INCLUDING the part you (and me) couldnt find online...
Thanks a lot!! :-) I really appreciate it :-)
HA!
I love Chris's dancing!
@AcousticBoxOffice And he was the bass player for Sam Bush's band until this past summer.
So incredible that they can still play this so clearly even at such a faster tempo than the original! All of these folks are such amazing musicians. One of my favorite sings they do
@AcousticBoxOffice And he was the bass player for Sam Bush's band until this past summer. Awesome musician in his own right.
Damn I wish they were still playing together! I also wish I could see them live. I love that all part @5:32
@bd1655 Not on this video. Back when they were a little younger Chris Thile's Dad played bass for them for a long time.
god i miss them
thanks for thr info. I'll check out byron house.
Yay!😊
goosebumps....
Wow! Don't know what happened pancakejenny but you go girl! Do you like oldies music too?
So good👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
love ya sarah!
love the mandolin it rocks, but the peter, paul & mary rendition of this song is much better. (which unfortunately seems to have been removed from TH-cam)
Still so good in 2024. ❤
