    Strangely enough, Doc was the first person I heard play the guitar live. My mother took me to his house in Deep Gap when I was about 7,around 1966. I sat on his sofa and Miss Rosa brought me cookies ( nilla wafers I think)and lemonade. Doc played "if the ocean was whiskey " for me and "Wildwood flower" for my mom and then went on to play about another 30-45 minutes, just the 3 of us. I didn't understand, of course, how significant this was, but kind of knew it was somehow special and I think it affected me more than I realized. One my most precious memories!

    Years back I saw Doc at Spring Grove Campground in Pennsylvania. It was after Mearl had passed, his tractor upset and pinned him down and was his demise. I sawDoc and Mearl at least a dozen times and was able to say, Thank You Doc, as he was lead to the stage, which he heard and said Your Welcome! But I did get to talk to Mearl and Micheal Coleman a bit later. Doc was greatly saddened by Mearls passing as many of us were. What a great talent and great slide player as well. Lost a great artist then. Doc could have been a huge Nashville star but preferred smaller venues. He always played with Heartfelt Spirit! I’ve always felt blessed to have seenDoc and Meral and be inspired greatly in what and how I played. Plus all the great old time tunes, Doc was a library of these songs, stories and music. Blessings to Doc and Meral and blessings to all of us who loved them! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

    Wonderful. Reminds me of my late father, who could play every Doc song to absolute perfection (and pretty much any song) on his favorite restored 62 Martin. Miss these sounds filling the house. I always wished so badly he would have taught his gift to others, but it was just that: a gift that can't simply be taught. Luckily, my brother inherited the gift :)

    • @rjmoney9
      @rjmoney9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I’m sure your father and brother practiced a whole lot to get that gift. Not even Doc himself was born playing this way 🙂
      I guess what I’m saying is it’s never too late to grab a guitar and join along!

      J Miller , it sure is a blessing Doc is the father of flat pickin. I thought we'd never hear anyone come close but Billy Strings is another special talent. I like how Billy always mentions Doc when he's asked about flat pickin..Your Father playing Doc's songs must've been great to be around y'alls house.

      A guy I knew in the Navy was a really good player, to my ears. We got a new guy in the division and he asked my buddy if he could play his guitar. My buddy, being the generous fella he was said of course. This new guy had my buddy in tears! He told this man "I can play the notes, note for note, but you, you make music." Best compliment I've ever heard one player give to another.

    • @mikelisacarb
      @mikelisacarb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He wasn't from WH CT, was he? I grew up with a guy who seems to fit the description. Unbelievable player who knew every song of Doc's, but he didn't communicate in the way of a teacher. (You didn't post the name, so i didn't either.) I'm hoping it's not him, because I hadn't heard that he has passed.

    First year the National Folk Festival was held at Michigan State University & East Lansing, Doc played an evening main stage show for thousands, which was fabulous.
    But that afternoon, he did an hour "workshop" for about 6-8 people sitting on the grass around him, picking & telling stories, sitting on a folding chair under a majestic old tree, with me sitting at his left knee!
    What a marvelous, memorable day, as close to a porch party down in the Hill Country that I ever got!
    Amazing performer!

I never saw a Doc Watson disc, or I would have bought it. I guess by the gaps in my collection that it was hard to get him over here in the UK and you kept them when you did.
