    Many years ago I raised Chinese Water deer annually for a friend. They were a joy and very easy to care for. Indeed small deer but not as fragile as they might seem.

    I was surprised at how short their lifespan is. Great footage.

    Ok, this being is some kind of koala rabbit bear boar! I love them!! My spirit animal is a deer; Even my first beloved stuffy was a deer! This animal is very special. I feel so resonant with everything about it. I am so happy to be finally introduced/reunited to its essence. Thank you for your beautiful video. 🦌🐨🐇🐻🐗

    90% of the water deer habitat distribution is in South Korea. so It's not technically a Chinese water deer. Just Water Deer is a fair name. An endangered species, but still there are too many of them in S.Korea.

    Oh wow I didn't even know we had Chinese Water Deer here in the UK, I'd have to travel south to spot one.

      Neither did I, as we didn't in our previous reality. This deer is a Mandela effect.

    Another fascinating "shot of wildlife" Liam. Intriguing that we now have nearly half of the world population of this species here! 👍🤓👍

    Very interesting, as always! I didn't know they had been in the UK for so long or could have up to four young.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 young was actually on the conservative side. One source I found said they could have up to 6 but I'm not sure how reliable it was. Cheers.

      And there was I, thinking one to two young! I have them near me on the Essex coast and recently saw three adults at once, feeding loosely, just before sunset.

    Hi Liam, just come across your channel , we have enjoyed watching your videos. We have a keen interest in wildlife ourselves. A few months ago I deliberately made a hole in my garden back fence and have been surprised at all the visitors we have had to our garden including foxes, badgers, squirrels rabbits and hedgehogs .
    We have captured a lot by using a Eufy security camera positioned at the top of our small garden. Considering we are in a town I can't belive how successful it has been .
    The female badger and fox are now quite obviously pregnant ad we are looking forward to seeing some new additions soon.
    Have you ever done a video specifically on British Red foxes?

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Welcome to the channel!
      It sounds like you have done a great job attracting wildlife to your garden and are being rewarded with some great views. I haven't done a red fox (or badger) specific video yet but they are on my list. I'm not sure when I'll get to them and I'll need to get some more footage before I think. Have a great day and I hope you continue to enjoy the channel.

    Despite their name, water deer are not deer at all, they are the only extant genus of the family Hydropotidae, there are two extant species of water deer, the Chinese Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis) and the Korean Water Deer (Hydropotes argyropus), the closest living relatives of the water deer are the musk deer (genus Moschus), which are the only extant genus of another family known as Moschidae, both Moschidae (Musk Deer and Fossil Relatives) and Hydropotidae (Water Deer and Fossil Relatives) are the only two extant families of the broader superfamily Moschoidea, which is the only extant superfamily of the infraorder Ceratodonta, which is part of the suborder Neoselenodontia (Herbivorous Even-Toed Hoofed Mammals), being only more derived than Tragulina (Chevrotains and Fossil Relatives) but is basal to the rest of Neoselenodontia, with the pecorans (infraorder Pecora) being more closely related to the tylopods (infraorder Tylopoda) than they are to the chevrotains and moschoids.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You sound very educated on the matter so I won't disagree with most of what you have said. However chinese water deer, despite their distant relation to a lot of the others, do fall within the family cervidae and as such are regarded as deer :)

    • @indyreno2933
      @indyreno2933 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest required trait that makes a deer a deer is the antlers, hence, deer belong to the infraorder Pecora, which contains all ruminants that have protuberances on their head (horns, antlers, and ossicones), water deer (genus Hydropotes) are not deer nor are they closely related to them, neither are musk deer (genus Moschus), they are respectively included within the monogeneric families Hydropotidae and Moschidae, which both form a monophyletic group being the superfamily Moschoidea, which is not part of the infraorder Pecora, but is instead part of an ancient lineage being the infraorder Ceratodonta (meaning Horn-Shaped Teeth), which is only more derived than Tragulina but is basal to all the other extant members of the suborder Neoselenodontia (Herbivorous Even-Toed Ungulates), in fact ruminants comprise a wastebasket taxon and a paraphyletic group because the tylopods (infraorder Tylopoda) are most closely related to the ruminants, specifically the pecorans, thus meaning that the pecorans are more closely related to the tylopods than they are to non-pecoran ruminants like chevrotains, water deer, and musk deer.

    This animal is extinct aound the would except South Korea where ~90% of the live and people still call then “chinese” water deer instead of just plain water deer. This animal has a terrible monster like cry and is very suicidal, jumping into cars late at night.
