    Greatest boots I’ve known. I’ve been building the Boston skyline for years in them. I’ll admit, the break in period is ridiculously long. And I recommend particular care getting the tongue centered and forming a good crease on each side. Little bit of rubbing alcohol on the hard spots speeds up the break in, and the occasional saddle soap brings em back to a brand new when they need a rehab. I rock insoles in mine, as I have very high arches. I tolerate the break because they practically become a negative of your foot. I typically have them anywhere from 4 to 6 years at a time, and resole them each year.
    It’s too bad to hear your negative review. I think your reviews are normally pretty good. Unfortunately, don’t think think you did your homework on this one... you can’t just try these out and get 877 comfy. You need to earn it.

    Growing up in the 50's in a developing housing area, I would spend hours on hours watching the carpenters work and they for the most part wore the 877. I didn't know them by name but I always remembered the look of them. At that time I told myself I would buy that boot so, I turn 70 this June and I will buy them. It's very difficult to find and wear history but with the 877 you can.

    Boot guy, you might need to change your name after this botched review. These boots are the strongest most economical, comfortable boot a man can find. The painful experience during the break in of this boot is paid back ten fold by the pure ecstasy experienced in the following years of comfort. The men that built this country had sons, and their sons had sons who build this country today... and they all love this boot. Whether this boot is coveted every 12 hour iron work day by Local 40 downtown in NYC or by the scabs down south, this is America’s best boot.

    First and foremost, I appreciate your review of the boot as a tool as opposed to a fashion accessory. However, your review seems to be a number of conclusions based on your general experience with boots and not time specifically working in the 877’s. Contrary to your review, these boots are NOT uncomfortable. It is quite the opposite. I bought my first pair in 1980 as a young man of 20. Worked six years of construction before going off to college. Wore them every day of college plus another ten years afterward.. I loved these boots. They were a second skin. They were so comfortable and they protected my feet. Had them resoled three times over twenty years. I lost them when an ex-girlfriend took them after we broke up (can you believe that?) Maybe she was jealous over how much I loved my boots. lol To be fair, I know that these days there are so many more boot options from which a working guy can chose. Maybe it’s too much of a hassle to have to break in boots. Still, knowing what I know, if needed a work boot as a daily tool, I’d choose the 877’s all over again. About the only improvement that could be made is added toe protection. I’ve been a “professional” white collar worker for years now. I don’t need to wear boots. But I do. After my ex stole my 877’s, I bought a pair of Red Wing 875’s, the 6 inch boot. I love them, too.

      never wore a more comfortable boot than this one. only complaint is the sore wears quickly...for the same reason it is so comfortable, i suppose. i have tried to find cheaper alternatives but ultimately always come back to this exact boot. this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. bought my first pair in 1988. bought my most recent pair last week. these boots only hurt me once...when i pay for them.

    Started wearing them in 1974 as an Iron Worker Apprentice. Still have a pair never put insoles in them ,kept them oiled with Red Wing Oil. No problem breaking in a pair. Best boots if you work the iron.

  • @xxbryan715xx
    @xxbryan715xx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This boot took me about a month to break In. It was a long and sometimes uncomfortable month but the payoff is so sweet. Everything including the all leather Insole are now perfectly molded to my feet and are better than any pair of orthotics I have tried. I’m pushing 10 hour days and 60 hour weeks in these and they are the first boot I have worn where my feet don’t ache at the end of the day and I’m not dying to take them off.
    These are not a boot I would rush Into. If you think these are going to be your next boots go buy a pair ASAP. Start wearing them on the weekends and nights around the house and doing little things like nights out on the town. After a few weeks of that when you can finally wear them the entire day start wearing them to work a few days a week. After that start wearing them every day of the work week with your back up boots in the car or locker if needed. You will get hot spots and maybe a blister every once and a while. Just understand that you are basically molding the perfect pair of boots to your feet every day you wear them. Have some mole skin in your first aid kit because you might need it. The only other thing I would add is ask for a pair of 80” laces before leaving the store and tie a little knot at the end of the laces so they don’t slip through the eyelets. Your lacing issues will be solved and you will live your new boots.

    Worn mine to work in all day yesterday, and forgot I had them on. Usually I get home and can’t wait to get my boots off my feet, but I literally forgot I was wearing boots when I got home. Once you break them in properly, they are really nice to wear.

  • @Tingolicious1
    @Tingolicious1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know I’m very late to this party. But as a guy who works on his feet all day, I can say I love these boots.
    I bought them on a recommendation from a friend and did lots of online research beforehand.
    So I bit the bullet and bought a pair. And for the first two weeks all I kept thinking was “boy did I make a mistake”. I actually took them off and do don’t put them away for 6 months and went back to my old boots. When the old boots finally gave out I was to cheap to buy another pair. So I pulled out the old 877’s. And boy I sure am glad I did. After another two weeks of break in time they started to become like a second skin. That hard leather insole started to mold to my foot. After another month I didn’t want to take them off when I got home.
    Now all of the boots I buy have a hard leather sole and I will never go back. They can be a little though to break in. But when you do the will be the most comfortable boots you will own. And they will last longer than those foam insole boots that start to break down the minute you start wearing them.

    Isn't that funny???
    THIS BOOT GUY REVIEWER
    IS JUST GIVING HIS OWN PERSONAL OPINION ABOUT BOOTS HE HAS NEVER USED!
    He judges the boots according to the way he feels about them by looking at them! And i find that misleading!
    Men who have used these boots for years should be doing the reviews not guys who dont even use them!
    I hear people saying that they use these boots and they last 5 months not really saying how they really use them and even then
    That's just the sole and nothing else, and seems like they use the boots to stop their car or bike or really abuse the hell out of them. And even them you van take them back for a new pair!!
    Not to mention that is really nice to see in the tag that says MADE IN U.S.A
    MEANING MADE IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!..........
    But so far so good, so far
    The best boot and this is the iconic very first model of this type..... these are the mother of all red wing boots in this style!

    Would you recommend the Moc Toe or the Iron Ranger for everyday work use?

    • @hunterbarksdale9778
      @hunterbarksdale9778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would highly recommend the 2418's from red wings with the composite toe. I'm an HVAC tech also, both commercial and residential. I live on some acreage as well and I've been in water all the way up to the top of the shafts of the boot and my feet were dry. I hated them for the first week of break in because I wore them all day. I've had ariats as well and my feet and back always hurt after working. With my red wings, I can go all day and not have to think about my feet or back hurting.

  • @blanecoomer6234
    @blanecoomer6234 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Red Wing sells the flat comfort which is a poron insert that takes up very little space. It really takes the edge off the boot, once the cork under the leather molds to your foot it offers fantastic arch support and cups the heel in much the same way an orthotic does. If you would like more shock absorption you can actually have a wedge Supersole 2 put on the boot as a resole through Red Wing.

    I've personally used these boots for over 8 years in my trade. Union ironworker (rodbuster) I've tried thorogoods and they blew out in 2-3months. I cycle two pairs of 877's and get roughly around 7-8 months out of each of them. These are not comfortable at first but feel great after break in. The only Boot I found that's comparable to the durability of the 877 is the Danner 8" Bull Run.

    As +DevonReviewer mentioned, this is by no means to be considered as a work boot in UK, same in Canada where I live. I own the 6 inch version and they are as comfy as some sneakers I have from Frye that I paid $200+ for. I find that the leather insole and the cork midsole are exactly what my feet are looking for for long days moving around.
    I took me 2 weeks (8 wears) to have them broken in to my feet. They are now extremely comfortable. I do have experience with boots, I was a military member.
    I look to these boots for leisure and fashion.

      If it wasn't for the $164.99 + tax I spent for them I would take them to Goodwill and dump them for some hobo to buy them that doesn't know any better.
      These boots still aren't comfortable even beat up like mine.....
      i68.tinypic.com/25k37yd.jpg
      i64.tinypic.com/2h3bl2u.jpg
      These boots are terrible and possibly the most uncomfortable I have ever bought. That triple stitched seam that connects the vamp area to the moc toe is a big thick glop of layered leather. It rubs abrasively right on the bones of your foot. It never wears down or goes away with use/break in. It's a design flaw and a manufacturing defect.
      $164.99 for garbage or $250 for an American icon......that's a no brainer decision to make for anyone other than guys trying to get by cheap.
      They have been dedicated as my "sacrifice boots" at work. I wear them when I am doing something that could possibly ruin a pair of boots to the point of needing thrown in the trash after one day and a mistake is made. I couldn't care less if these go in the trash hopper. They are pure junk and trash themselves. Might as well kill them with noble cause and put them out of their misery properly though.

    I wear wedge boots after years and years of traditional heel style boots and at least for roofing, it's leagues more comfortable. Walking on ballasted rooftops dragged stones with a regular heal sucks. They are alot like vans skate shoes if you've ever worn them. I can't speak for the 877 but the 411 boots are awesome. Comfy and durable.

    You don't need insoles. The leather insoles break in and mold to your feet. Wear them for short periods and oil them. Once they break in they are soo comfortable. This is like a review of a brand new pair of 501 Levis, yeah they suck until you wear them for a while.

    The 877 actually doesn't come in different widths, the 10877 does and the 875 does, but not the 877. I sized up a 1/2 since I have wide feet and really liked the 877.

      I still refer to the 10877 as 877. Old habits are hard to break I guess. My Dad referred to them as Irish Setters.

    They take FOREVER to break in! I think they are a great multi purpose boot. I work half in office and half in the field and I have worn them quail hunting and and even piloted helicopters while wearing them. If you're looking for a pure "work boot" there are better options, try maybe the 866 or the 963.

    Most comfortable boots I've known. Worn everyday. Break in period was long. I have superfeet insoles in them. I use saddle soap to keep em nice. I recommend the vibram christy when and if you choose to resole. It wears like iron compared to that redwing crepe sole. Union carpenter with several years and several soles on mine. Hard time going back to something else. However, I will admit I am eyeballing the similar Thorogood and Danner boots.

    Seriously though. I agree. I'm not even joking when I say it took me over a year before I could wear these boots daily. And only 8 hours at that. These things were horribly uncomfortable for a long time. It doesn't help that I bought some red wing "comfort" insoles for $50. They were so tall that I have never been able to wear them with any boot I have ever owned because of their thickness. At 8 months, I switched out the insole to something a little thinner, which worked, but I'm still lucky to get 6-8 hours of wear out of these boots before my feet can't take any more. I hope they break in a little more over time, because they cost quite a bit.

I take them out of the box lace them up.,and go to work..I have done this for over 20 years .they are more expensive than average boots but they are made in U.S.A besides your average boots are not giving Americans any jobs.These boots are comfortable, worth every penny.

    Hi Boot Guy, I've been wearing the 877 for a while now, but the breaking in period was horrible. I used wet socks and Lundhags leather wax from Sweden.This really does the job. Now they are quite comfortable but I am curious for a pair of Thorogoods. The only thing is that they are not sold in the Netherlands, so I am forced to buy them online. Do you think that's a good idea?

    • @TheBootGuyreviews

      +Bert Niesten I would buy your size. If it's a bit tight take out the Insole till it loosens up. If it's a bit big add a thicker insole. Unlike the 877 this boot is soft.

    Still my favorite moc toe wedge crepe sole boot. Actually I own the 10877 (work model). These will last a lifetime of casual wear if you take care of them. Just a good comfortable multipurpose boot. They won't take a great amount of abuse, but no moc toe wedge sole boot will. For their intended purposes, they are perfect.
    If you want a boot that you can detonate C-4 on the toe, and still walk home, buy Whites USA Smoke Jumper lace to toe boots. EVERYTHING else has a life expectancy and is designed for moderate abuse/ normal wear and tear.

    • @JohnDoeEagle1
      @JohnDoeEagle1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I almost stand corrected......after these boots are resoled at least twice they are EXTREMELY durable. Those disposable throw away work boots with the heavy lugged sole aren't so great after a year or two of use and they are bound for the dumpster permanently.

    1. Put on thick socks. 2. Put a long-strong plastic bag, with no holes in it, over your feet, secure it with rubber band around your leg, and slide your feet into the boots. 3. Step into a bathtub full of warm/hot water with your boots on. Make sure the boots are completely submerged. 4. Bend, flex, kneel, etc. while standing in the tub of water for 15 to 30 min. 4. Step out of tub, keep boots on all day, walking around. Keep the plastic on, over your socks while walking around, you don't want blisters on your feet and heel. 5. At night, take the boots off and dry on a foot dryer for 24 to 48 hrs. 6. Now oil the boots, water dries out the leather so you have to put oil back in boots. 7. Do this a couple of times within two to four weeks, and you will have boots that are molded to your feet and broken in. This method is good for the all leather boots with leather foot bed. If you like the Chinese cheaper boots, this method works, but the boot will not last as long because the material is cheaper.

    I tend to disagree with most reviews about this boot. I don't think they need removable insoles, I have the 877's and 2292's neither of which have removable insoles and both are comfortable. I had no problem breaking them in or wearing them for long days. I definitely agree with getting longer laces!

    I work at a Univeristy where there's a LOT of walking, climbings stairs, concrete, asphalt, dirt, grass, work on your knees (toes rubbing on floor) stand on ladders, etc. The wedge soles that 877's come with, only lasted me 5 months. The boot upper itself is wonderful. The boots are very well made. The lacing keep your ankles safe as far as twisting when walking on uneven surfaces, soft terrain and even going up and down stairs. They are heavy. They're also hard to break-in, it'll take you anywhere from a month to two to really experience this boot. The upper will soften up a lot after the first oil/maintenance treatment, which is free at the Red Wing store. For me personally, they only lasted about 4 to almost 5 months and I literally ran the sole down to approx 1mm then I brought them back to the owner of the store and he took them back and sent them out to get me a new foam/rubber layer sole (vibram also) from the manufacturer, under warranty.

    And these boots are the most comfortable and long lasting boots I have ever worn. I’ll admit that the break in period can be very uncomfortable but after a couple of weeks they’re only get better. After your first resole they feel like heaven and on a 12 hour day in hard conditions working the iron you will be glad to have these boots on your feet. The initial investment is hard to swallow but in the long run I would rather pay $80 bucks a year to resole a pair of redwings and have the best quality, comfortable reliable boots than buying a more cost effective uncomfortable unreliable throw away boot every year. If you properly oil and resole these boots you can comfortably run these boots for many years in comfort and style. Just an Ironworkers opinion work safe boys.

    Had 2 pair of redwings and they are not comfy by any stretch.....well made and durable YES....some guys can wear rocks on their feet and not see a problem ( I've known some)...so its very subjective
    And they are one if the most expensive on market......red wing is fashion statement and the name carries their brand.....
