No character in Critical Role has ever felt more like a video game NPC than Orley. Every time he says "Where to, cap'n?", I can just see the dialogue box opening up.
Man, some of those notes are super funny, while others are just ridiculously bad to the point of being funny again. That one is a mix, though I do like the contrast between Beau's actual seriousness and the note's so-bad-it's-good joke. The first few notes from the reuploads are so hilariously bad I started laughing my ass off XD
Gotta be honest. I don't like the joke notes. Some of them are even funny, but they are distracting from the story and the mood. I prefer the info notes.
@@ASeed17 He doesn't like atonal beats that spoil the mood if anything the editor CAN be the killjoy. Me personally I'm not fond of the "info" on account of the things that are inaccurate or misinformative. To each his own though.
In Campaign 1, they were suspicious of almost all of the NPCs they met because the chat requested some NPCs the party trusted to betray them. I loved it one time when they grilled an NPC so much and accepted her, and she ended up kidnapping Tary. The whole party suspiciously looked at Sam because they thought he was upto something
All of Sam's characters I've seen act as caretakers in some way. Scanlan with the leader role and mansion, tarrion with being their item supplier, and now Nott.

That was an absolutely adorable moment by Marisha. Just her absolutely nerding out at getting to have real First Mate duties! One of my favorite real-life moments for her, among many.
@@Lucarioguild7 Caleb doesn't stink anymore, and hasn't for a long time. It was actually funny to have Liam spell it out with literal number of days (that Caleb has been showered and clean for over a month now) just because Sam likes to needle him about it.
Matt: introduces entire pages of written out actions for ship roles, makes an open sea encounter, crafts entire sea combat scenarios, fleshes out their daily lives on the ship, and puts in a ton of effort for all the ship stuff The Mighty Nein: ends the fight without any combat, and decides to stop sailing entirely and get rid of the ship.

As someone who loves Durian, it's so funny to see people's reactions to it. Like once you get over the smell, the taste is good. It's hilarious to see whether someone likes it or hates it.
I took it as Laura already knowing about them and trying to prepare Travis for the barrier to entry. It didn't help that he ate one with the wrapper still on.
Sometimes Taliesin looks frustrated or super stressed when rolls or situations aren't working out, and I feel bad for him. Cadueceus's buffs and debuffs are so valueable, but when you play that sort of support character sometimes you don't fully understand how important you are to the group. Every 1d4 that helps the party hit, or makes a monster miss is essentially damage that Caduceus is doing, or preventing. He'll never see this but if anyone else plays a support character keep that in mind. Your buffs, debuffs, and healing make it so anything your party does is at least partly your victory. Also every once and a while you can completely destroy a DM's evil planned encounter.
Those 'bless' spells on paper (and mathematically) are great. But in my current campaign, when I've cast bless it has -never- helped. People either roll low enough that it can't save their roll, or high enough that they didn't need it. Every.Damn.Single.Time. At first I thought that was confirmation bias, then I started paying closer attention and it's literally not been helping.
My first DnD character is a useless fighter, a Cleric from the church that cannot fight at all and only has support spells mostly of healing. I saved the team so many times with guidance that is ridiculous
@@julianb4157 The first time I played a wizard who was built solely with buffing and debuffing, I’ll admit there were times when I wished I could be a more dps type character, use the cool flashy spells, but then there were moments when I was able to shut down the bad guys and that feeling was incredible. I ended up building a cleric afterwards who was full buff/debuff cause I enjoy enjoyed it so much. Don’t underestimate the power of controlling the battlefield, it makes a huge difference.
@@julianb4157 just bad luck. It doesn't mean that the spells are useless, in fact, they can save lives when nothing else can. Of course, it also depends on luck, but that's DnD for you. If I remember correctly, Cadueceus prevented a hit from a dragon towards Jester with his Bane when she was low. If not for it, she would've died and it would be difficult to get her body out so the revivification would be tricky. Sometimes it's better to use buffs/debuffs and sometimes it's more advantegeous to heal or attack. In my opinion, it makes the game more interesting

I see so many moments where Fjord does morally ambiguous things with an evil eagerness, like with the hand or keeping Avantika underwater, its subtle but its there
3:14:45 travis finds a cracker between his notes, stares at it for a bit and then puts it in his mouth and the only one who sees him is marisha😂 thats so fitting for the whole "travis sees a do not touch sign and immediately touches it" thing
2:50:17 had to rewind a couple of times to see each one of them react to "They die before we reach the shore" and it's magnificent. Sam first looks at Liam and then Travis. Marisha first looks at Matt. Laura squints her eyes at Travis (in character) like instantly. Taleisen didn't even realize what Travis said before he corrected himself. And Liam is so deep into reading the identified things that it went straight over his head. Matt's eyes just widen in disbelief. It's wonderful to see the irl relations they have in moments of complete character reversal like this one.

I'm so happy Travis got a lot of "questing" in this campaign. Last time as Grog he had a lot of backstage time and it's not like he isn't a team player (on the contrary) but it's nice seeing him shine as a caster.
Ryan Strauss search for Grog was arc about everyone else but Grog. He was only in last 20 min of the game and most of his in game arcs were just fighting and not much actual character development and backstory
There was stuff pre-stream with his father. All the stuff with the sword. The skull. And the stuff with his tribe/the gauntlets. Plus all the stuff with Pike and Scanlan and even Vax throughout. And he was built as a character that wouldn’t have a heckuva lot of character growth.

Yep, I had a player recently spend almost an hour trying to build a makeshift raft in order to circumvent 3 days of in game travel and exploration that i had prepared
Matt should be used to it by now, since they almost always take routes he doesn't expect. These guys have the weirdest strategies for problem solving I have ever seen. I bet you he has wasted over three full days at the least of prep that never came to fruition. Though it is kinda hilarious exactly how many possible ship fights they managed to dodge through this entire sea journey.
@@dig8634 A lot more prep time gets "wasted" when he preps something they just decide not to do at all (for example fight with the gentleman). However you can always recycle encounters, characters etc. as GM. For example, if they rolled low on investigation check in Lorenzo's house or never turned the bag of holding upside down they would have never found the letter that let to them looking for Avantika. However, Matt could have given them the letter later or find some other hook to send them towards the Menagerie coast, if that was something he had prepared in advance.
@@MarvelOfRain Avantika is such a big part of Fjord's story, so I guarantee he would have found a way to make it work. If they kept avoiding it, he could have Avantika literally hunt him down as a result of some vision she got. But yeah, there are plenty of story threads they just never discovered. What's the secret behind that chair? What was in the cellar of that one leather selling orc in the wilderness?
I'm so late for this, but I love that Matt tried to give them a way out of the Nicodranas mess WITH a reward for killing pirates, but somehow, they're all convinced that they're wanted in town.
I think as players they're aware it's safe, but as characters all of them have an inherent mistrust of authority, and to be honest, terrible perspectives on their own personalities. They all just believe that everyone hates them all of the time: it's kinda sad.
Matt and Travis talked on stream that there was a way for them to return. So the group is definitely aware. I think they just choose not to because the characters previously expressed the assumption that they are wanted and they decided to maintain the consistency.
He tried so many times to explain that literally nobody knows who they are and if they did they killed *Bad Guys* and they're still like "We can never return we're sorry Jester"

@@MorinehtarTheBlue So I'm making my way through this, and I honestly think that Fjord is just curious and low-key wants more power to protect his found family (ex: Iron Shepards arc) but doesn't want his friends to think that he's evil and doesn't want to hurt anyone. I think he would be able to have a more clear motivation if he had more information. They have no idea who Ukaota is and if he's good or bad, there is a real (small) chance that he's been locked away by like jealous gods or misinformed mortals.

I see him having much more fun as a Cleric than as a blood hunter with Molly. The class was cool but I don't think it had nearly as much utility as the Cleric does.
I love the MN. They’re funny they’re diverse, tricksy, creative and reckless. Everything you want in an adventuring party. But every now and then, I really truly miss Scanlan’s inspirations.
He was the definitive bard, actually showing HOW bardic inspiration works and why it improves your chances. The entire table would be stressing out about a fight, Sam starts to sings, and everyone at the table immediately cheers up and sings along while you can see their stress melt away, leaving them renewed and optimistic for the next part of the fight.

I think a lot of it has to do with volume. Like, Fjord may be tall, but he's sleek. Like a basketball player. While Yasha is tall and bulky, like a pro wrestler. And Caduces is easily the tallest of the bunch (>7 feet yes?) But he's also really thin so he probably weighs less than Yasha.

Caduceus really the MVP this episode. Control water changing the entire situation, divination confirming a big story element, protection from evil and good may well have stopped a possession... Keep brewing that dead people tea.

Nott and Caleb's talks scare me, it's like they are scripted. Nott's innocence when asking his wizard friend questions is eerie in tone. I can sense Caleb's character possibly having a mental decline occurring and it's sad that only the goblin who's his friend isn't fully aware of it. So, so, good improvisation going on. Love this realm of fantasy never gets old watching them play.
I love how diverse these people are. Last campaign they were kind and mostly polite they had mostly an upstanding attitude to it. This campaign they are just a bunch of crackheads. I also love Laura. Vex was so interesting but jester is so different then vex. I love when jester was taken and when they got them back she asked the traveler why he wasn’t there. I just love how diverse her characters are.
I will never get where people get the idea that VM where polite nice people. Just because they all had british accents doesn't negate all the crazy shit they did.
@@spensirmclife6549 lmao right, I absolutely loved campaign one and vox machina, but there were many times where they were simply a bunch of murder hobos killing and maiming people just because. Collateral damage was barely ever on their mind, yet they always saw themselves as some moral authority with free range to pass judgement.
@@spensirmclife6549 I think it’s because they ended up taking on world-saving quests at higher levels? They were pretty immoral on a smaller scale, though - remember the running gag about them murdering elderly NPCs? M9 is the opposite, they often express concern about killing potential innocents in small random encounters but don’t seem too bothered about chaos they cause on a larger scale. It’s interesting.
Me too. I just made that comment but damn them! I wonder if they don't know her AC, or at least don't remember it. However, it would help with disguising her too as she's the only one apart from Beau who can't. I found that whole conversation really frustrating.
Alejandro Soto They can, but they lose "Unarmored Defense" which gives AC = 10 + Dex + Con, so with a low Con and/or Dex, light or medium armor may be better.

@@deffdefying4803 I agree. This is actually something where I personally (just my opinion) think it's a little mistake on Matts part. As a DM myself, I would've given Fjord a bit more than just that. I love moral dilemmas and I would maybe try to tie it with something negative. Also, I would have given Fjord more for that second temple, to tempt him to go to the third. I actually am DMing a campaign right now and I have a Warlock Player, who is in a similar situation. She gets incredible powers from her patron, but when persuing those, sets free a demon lord and an army of demons. So right now, she is torn apart inside and can't decide on what to do. I love moral dilemmas like this.
The spell is powerful enough to sink entire ships and he gets it on top of everything he already has, doesn't have to expend a spell slot or attune an item. Also, it's only one sphere. I'd imagine these powers would get much stronger if he inserted the first sphere as well, or finished releasing his patron. I'd agree that with caduceus and jester having that spell, it takes away some of it's significance, and I would've sweetened the deal to make fjord think twice about going to the third temple.

In Campaign 1, they were suspicious of almost all of the NPCs they met because the chat requested some NPCs the party trusted to betray them. I loved it one time when they grilled an NPC so much and accepted her, and she ended up kidnapping Tary.
The whole party suspiciously looked at Sam because they thought he was upto something
Jester's little "thanks mom" after Nott asked if she needed money is the cutest. Nott really leans into the mom role whenever she can.
All of Sam's characters I've seen act as caretakers in some way. Scanlan with the leader role and mansion, tarrion with being their item supplier, and now Nott.

I took it as Laura already knowing about them and trying to prepare Travis for the barrier to entry. It didn't help that he ate one with the wrapper still on.
Sometimes Taliesin looks frustrated or super stressed when rolls or situations aren't working out, and I feel bad for him. Cadueceus's buffs and debuffs are so valueable, but when you play that sort of support character sometimes you don't fully understand how important you are to the group. Every 1d4 that helps the party hit, or makes a monster miss is essentially damage that Caduceus is doing, or preventing.
He'll never see this but if anyone else plays a support character keep that in mind. Your buffs, debuffs, and healing make it so anything your party does is at least partly your victory.
Also every once and a while you can completely destroy a DM's evil planned encounter.
Those 'bless' spells on paper (and mathematically) are great. But in my current campaign, when I've cast bless it has -never- helped. People either roll low enough that it can't save their roll, or high enough that they didn't need it. Every.Damn.Single.Time. At first I thought that was confirmation bias, then I started paying closer attention and it's literally not been helping.
Its essentially giving the party +2-8 to attributes, 1-4 ability scores modifiers.
My first DnD character is a useless fighter, a Cleric from the church that cannot fight at all and only has support spells mostly of healing. I saved the team so many times with guidance that is ridiculous
@@julianb4157 The first time I played a wizard who was built solely with buffing and debuffing, I’ll admit there were times when I wished I could be a more dps type character, use the cool flashy spells, but then there were moments when I was able to shut down the bad guys and that feeling was incredible. I ended up building a cleric afterwards who was full buff/debuff cause I enjoy enjoyed it so much. Don’t underestimate the power of controlling the battlefield, it makes a huge difference.
@@julianb4157 just bad luck. It doesn't mean that the spells are useless, in fact, they can save lives when nothing else can. Of course, it also depends on luck, but that's DnD for you. If I remember correctly, Cadueceus prevented a hit from a dragon towards Jester with his Bane when she was low. If not for it, she would've died and it would be difficult to get her body out so the revivification would be tricky.
Sometimes it's better to use buffs/debuffs and sometimes it's more advantegeous to heal or attack. In my opinion, it makes the game more interesting

*20+ Episodes later after getting stuck in the "Happy Fun Ball of Tricks" and working to grab Caleb more books*

2:50:17 had to rewind a couple of times to see each one of them react to "They die before we reach the shore" and it's magnificent. Sam first looks at Liam and then Travis. Marisha first looks at Matt. Laura squints her eyes at Travis (in character) like instantly. Taleisen didn't even realize what Travis said before he corrected himself. And Liam is so deep into reading the identified things that it went straight over his head. Matt's eyes just widen in disbelief. It's wonderful to see the irl relations they have in moments of complete character reversal like this one.

I'm so happy Travis got a lot of "questing" in this campaign. Last time as Grog he had a lot of backstage time and it's not like he isn't a team player (on the contrary) but it's nice seeing him shine as a caster.

Ryan Strauss search for Grog was arc about everyone else but Grog. He was only in last 20 min of the game and most of his in game arcs were just fighting and not much actual character development and backstory
There was stuff pre-stream with his father. All the stuff with the sword. The skull. And the stuff with his tribe/the gauntlets.
Plus all the stuff with Pike and Scanlan and even Vax throughout.

Yep, I had a player recently spend almost an hour trying to build a makeshift raft in order to circumvent 3 days of in game travel and exploration that i had prepared
Matt should be used to it by now, since they almost always take routes he doesn't expect. These guys have the weirdest strategies for problem solving I have ever seen.
I bet you he has wasted over three full days at the least of prep that never came to fruition. Though it is kinda hilarious exactly how many possible ship fights they managed to dodge through this entire sea journey.
@@dig8634 A lot more prep time gets "wasted" when he preps something they just decide not to do at all (for example fight with the gentleman). However you can always recycle encounters, characters etc. as GM.
For example, if they rolled low on investigation check in Lorenzo's house or never turned the bag of holding upside down they would have never found the letter that let to them looking for Avantika. However, Matt could have given them the letter later or find some other hook to send them towards the Menagerie coast, if that was something he had prepared in advance.
@@MarvelOfRain Avantika is such a big part of Fjord's story, so I guarantee he would have found a way to make it work.
If they kept avoiding it, he could have Avantika literally hunt him down as a result of some vision she got.
But yeah, there are plenty of story threads they just never discovered.

I'm so late for this, but I love that Matt tried to give them a way out of the Nicodranas mess WITH a reward for killing pirates, but somehow, they're all convinced that they're wanted in town.

I think as players they're aware it's safe, but as characters all of them have an inherent mistrust of authority, and to be honest, terrible perspectives on their own personalities. They all just believe that everyone hates them all of the time: it's kinda sad.
Matt and Travis talked on stream that there was a way for them to return. So the group is definitely aware. I think they just choose not to because the characters previously expressed the assumption that they are wanted and they decided to maintain the consistency.
He tried so many times to explain that literally nobody knows who they are and if they did they killed *Bad Guys* and they're still like "We can never return we're sorry Jester"

I think Fjord will probably break his pact soon. Not to mention someone else will free U'katoa thanks to the Mighty Nein. My guess is probably around episode 130 or so the Mighty Nein will probably face off against U'katoa at some point.

@@MorinehtarTheBlue So I'm making my way through this, and I honestly think that Fjord is just curious and low-key wants more power to protect his found family (ex: Iron Shepards arc) but doesn't want his friends to think that he's evil and doesn't want to hurt anyone. I think he would be able to have a more clear motivation if he had more information. They have no idea who Ukaota is and if he's good or bad, there is a real (small) chance that he's been locked away by like jealous gods or misinformed mortals.

And Percy's ranged attacks were always helpful
He was the definitive bard, actually showing HOW bardic inspiration works and why it improves your chances. The entire table would be stressing out about a fight, Sam starts to sings, and everyone at the table immediately cheers up and sings along while you can see their stress melt away, leaving them renewed and optimistic for the next part of the fight.

Nott and Caleb's talks scare me, it's like they are scripted. Nott's innocence when asking his wizard friend questions is eerie in tone. I can sense Caleb's character possibly having a mental decline occurring and it's sad that only the goblin who's his friend isn't fully aware of it. So, so, good improvisation going on. Love this realm of fantasy never gets old watching them play.

I just love how diverse her characters are.

Collateral damage was barely ever on their mind, yet they always saw themselves as some moral authority with free range to pass judgement.

They were pretty immoral on a smaller scale, though - remember the running gag about them murdering elderly NPCs? M9 is the opposite, they often express concern about killing potential innocents in small random encounters but don’t seem too bothered about chaos they cause on a larger scale. It’s interesting.
Matt is so good at creating believable enjoyable NPC's. I absolutely adore how attached they all looked when handing ownership over to Orley.

@@deffdefying4803 I agree. This is actually something where I personally (just my opinion) think it's a little mistake on Matts part. As a DM myself, I would've given Fjord a bit more than just that. I love moral dilemmas and I would maybe try to tie it with something negative. Also, I would have given Fjord more for that second temple, to tempt him to go to the third. I actually am DMing a campaign right now and I have a Warlock Player, who is in a similar situation. She gets incredible powers from her patron, but when persuing those, sets free a demon lord and an army of demons. So right now, she is torn apart inside and can't decide on what to do. I love moral dilemmas like this.
The spell is powerful enough to sink entire ships and he gets it on top of everything he already has, doesn't have to expend a spell slot or attune an item. Also, it's only one sphere. I'd imagine these powers would get much stronger if he inserted the first sphere as well, or finished releasing his patron. I'd agree that with caduceus and jester having that spell, it takes away some of it's significance, and I would've sweetened the deal to make fjord think twice about going to the third temple.
