My dad did this until he started refusing to eat. When they start not recognizing hunger refusing to eat is the hardest. Especially as the brain stops knowing how to eat and drink even with helping them. I hate this disease. Hang in there lady❤ You do your best and that's all you can do.

Grandpa's hunger might just be a sense of boredom -- some of us tend to eat when we don't think there's anything else to do. Like with most comfort food eating, we can probably do without it and stick to the nutritious meals Grandpa's scheduled to eat at throughout the day.

OMG 😱!! The feeling of hunger Grandpa feels is all Alzheimer’s/Dementia related. He feels hungry, but he really isn’t. He had just eaten dinner and he felt hungry. Gave him a banana and he feeds it to the dog. That has to be the hardest part of being a caretaker because they’re telling you they are hungry and it’s easy to give in and give them something, but it’s not healthy or good for them. I’m so sorry Danielle, as this has to be the hardest most difficult thing to deal with. Prayers ongoing for you Danielle because being a caregiver doesn’t stop and it’s the hardest to do deal with. Much Love ♥️ and Respect to you my dear.

The ones that end up in a nursing home are usually the mean ones and the fighters. It is very easy to work with and many people with this disease are not and the family places them in a nursing home to let us deal with them. Takes a lot of people to care for one person when they're hitting and spitting at you and we know they can't help it, it's how some people car with this disease. A lot of training involved but it's still exhausting taking care of people that are not nice and are mean.

Grendpa Ed's mind had a rewind of how he was hungry before dinner and is convinced he didn't eat yet. His mind playing tricks. Dementia is a cruel disease. Danielle is using the right techniques to fit Ed as an individual. He is fed, bathed, clothed in clean apparel, cared for with a meticulous schedule. Other people with elders may have a different method. However, anyone else with no experience has no relevant advice!

When Grandma went in the nursing home they fattened her up. At home she would only eat a can of soup and pick at her other meals. They made shakes up for the residents in between their meals and she looked forward to them. They got her walking more with a walker three times a day plus physical therapy. Her appetite got better and she started to smile more. It was her choice to go in a nursing home when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She stayed in her own home until she took a couple bad falls.

I took care of my mom with dementia ALONE for 5 years….
      I know dementia… she always remembered me…
Getting her to eat was my problem… she didn’t want to … so it was very hard to make sure she ate…
You do it your way … but the people watching listen to him and it hurts to hear him saying he’s hungry…
me … not you… I’d put something down for him… if he wanted it good… if he didn’t… I put it in the refrigerator for later…just me…
I saw you gave him a banana… reasoning with him is like talking to a child that doesn’t understand…
Like I said I took care of my mom ALONE for 5 years…
And my story is way harder than you could EVER imagine!
I understand you MUST do it your way and I respect that…
But the people watching this … feel for grandpa… and explaining he just ate … while he’s …. Pleading for more … is hard on the viewers…
Don’t take this as criticism… it’s just how some of US feel..
and I thought it was ok to leave OUR comments …
I like how Dan works with him
      Have a nice life

Danielle is right, sometimes when you think you're hungry you do actually need a drink but so is Ed right, it's his mind & his stomach so if he feels hungry then he very well might be, a big salad is not much for a man, even with 'some protein' & two big cookies, maybe he needed some new potatoes or some pasta with it or even a slice or two of bread? But having said all that, food does seem to bring Ed comfort & who knows it might help ease his anxiety & that's why he always wants food? Just a thought, i'm not his Carer, Danielle is so she obviously knows more about Ed than i do

I think what a lot of people fail to realize is Danielle knew Ed before his dementia. She know how controlling and set in his ways he was so she HAS to take controll now. Its for his own good. He has a controlling personality and he's not in the position mentally to be in control of anything. Regardless of what he "thinks" he can still control.
I worked with people with dementia for over 20 years and its hard but very necessary.

You know, this is unusual compared to most.
Some patients you have to make eat.
You'd think your body would know, wouldn't you?
I get forgetting you eat, but you'd think you'd not feel hungry.
I wonder, with the older generation if it's different as they were way more regulated with meals than younger generations.
My grandma cooked breakfast, dinner, supper & my grandpa always liked a snack before bed.
I don't know how they ate so often & stayed thin. I'd be sick. 😅
But, I wonder if it's more schedule than hunger.
He just is used to eating certain times of the day like clockwork so thinks he should be hungry. 🤷‍♀️
What will nursing homes do with our generation.
I eat weird hours and only once a day (yet I'm not thin) 😅
    Hope you are well Danielle.
Go get that retired husband of yours and go lock yourself away for a few hours OR take a weekend a month off and go to a hotel.
    You gotta stay safe too
You're up all night and then have to be up all day. You may need to do shifts.

Listen, hear and stop the madness with your worthless words and advice.
Danielle is NOT starving, abusing and needs to speak loudly because Ed can’t hear.
He did get a banana and you can see that on the floor.
Danielle knows exactly how to handle situations that you trolls just have no clue.

She certainly does have Ed’s back.

People who tune in here just for entertainment because from the outside looking in one may see humor but the reality is Dementia is a very frustrating disease. Dan handles it with kid gloves and Danielle handles like a Mother would deal with her children, she doesn't pacify Ed because sometimes you need to be FIRM with your communication in cases like this where the person with dementia has poor hearing. Danielle speaks loudly and clearly so ED can hear exactly what Danielle is saying to him. Unless you have provided help to someone with dementia you have ZERO understanding of how this disease effects people. It takes a very special kind of human being to deal with someone who has dementia and even more special when you are living in the same house as that person. Danielle is doing great with Ed and if you disagree then that's your problem not Danielle's. Just think how much worse things could be if they had chosen to put Ed into an assisted living facilty, those places are the WORSE place to go and slowlty die being surrounded by people who have ZERO apathy for you because you are just a patient to them. I'm sure most have heard stories about the abuse that goes on in these facilties and thank GOD for Dan and Danielle taking ED into their home and caring for his every need. Great job Danielle! Now get rid of some of those damn animals! You running a Zoo or a Nursing home? LOL!
