One story about him is often told, when he was directing music in a movie *naukari* in early fifties. Kishore Kumar was in the lead role. But Salil da declared that Kishore will not sing any song, as he is not a trained singer. Later, somehow Kishore Kumar managed to convince him that he should be given a chance. ....and magnanimous Salil da gave him songs to sing. The most memorable song was * Chhota sa Ghar hoga baadlon ki chhaon mein* . This song became a big hit. However, Salil da never hesitated to take Mukesh ji, who was also a non- trained singer. He gave Mukesh ji many memorable songs like *kahin door jab din dhal jaye*. Even Naushad ji gave break to Mukesh ji in late forties in film *mela*. Tu Gaye ja geet Milan ke, apni lagan ke, sajan Ghar jaana hai* was a big hit. What I mean to say that singers should be respected for their sweet voice and their ability to catch the correct rythm and mood of the song. This jumla *untrained singer* is meaningless. Kishore Kumar sir and Mukesh ji proved this..
