It honestly kind of frustrates me how people in fandom speak about Yoosung. Like you said, it makes sense that people were...put off by him being obsessed with his cousin. Comparing MC to her. But in hindsight it made so much sense to me that he acted like that. The way he told it, she literally gave him a reason to live and to love living. He talked about how he was literally just going through the motions before she came. And then she left. The person who motivated him to live life was gone. Why are there people surprised that he isnt over it or in a better place after two years? Its the same way Jaehee has Zen, Jumin has Elizabeth, Zen has his drive to prove himself, and Seven has [REDRACTED]. That person for Yoosung was taken away. And then MC came along and his motivation to keep moving forward was suddenly sparked again. Of course hes going to relate that feeling coming back to Rika at first. Of course hes going to insist she's just like her, that it feels like she was sent from Rika, that hes reminded of her.
Personally, I view Jaehee's route the start of a slow burn strangers to friends to partners to lovers coffee shop romance. It may not be as explicit as the other routes are, but I think it stands out way more this way. I do love your interpretation as well though.
Less than three minutes in but Zen’s “straightest man in musical theatre”, and 707’s “memeing through the pain, casually lives in an underground bunker” has me CACKLING. This game is truly ridiculous.
Never forgetting when I was in the middle of discovering my sexuality and I decided to do the Jaehee route. After getting her good ending (with so, so much help just to guarantee it) and the after ending, I deleted the game. To this day, she’s the only route I’ve ever played.
I’m a completionist at heart so I did the other routes but as a closeted lesbian in middle school Jaehee’s route was the one I replayed multiple times. I wish the boys were just friend routes not gonna lie

I actually really like the v/yoosung eye parallel! I think the fact that u mentioned about yoosung chooses to heal his eye is a really telling character moment. Unlike V, who chooses to be blinded by love and lack perspective, Yoosung actively chooses to heal. I feel like it drives home the idea that he can have an identity separated from his love, which was a thematic idea presented with rika, that he didn't really have an identity outside of her.
Anyone else like Jaehee's normal ending more than the good ending? In the good ending, we're straight up friendzoned, and in the normal ending Jaehee and Jumin are passionately fighting for our attention. Both seem pretty romantic to me, to be honest.

I am embarrassed to say I never really liked Jaehee when first playing the game, I fell in love with her not because of her route, but because in Saran's route, there's a phone call where she sings to MC a Taco jingle she heard from a commercial, it was the funniest and cutest thing ever and it really cheered me up from the depression that is Saran's route XD.
I'm on day 10 of Yoosung's route and I feel that. But also, I don't like his route overall for the same reason I didn't like Seven and Zen's routes: The plot (represented by Echo Girl and Mint Eye) takes away from the romance. (I love Yoosung though!)
As someone whose mother passed away not that long ago, Jaehee and Yoosung's stories always strike a chord with me. I see alot of myself in how they handle grief; Jaehee plunging herself into overworking, and Yoosung's dissociation, processing grief and reconciliation with two sides of a person you adored. I always read Yoosung's Rika obsession as someone who never processed their grief and was desperate to find some greater meaning to a traumatic event, essentially stuck in a bargaining/denial stage. There's flaws here and there, but in general, I really connected with these plot threads all these years later:)

Wondering at how fucking wild these people are and how wild it is that she's just sitting there witnessing this shit? I'm looking at you, GTA sequence lmfao. Like there's no way MC didn't spend some time after the car wreck photo just looking at a wall and reevaluating her life for a while.

I'm enjoying the number of people relying how they had their gay awakenings to Jahee's route, and it makes me laugh in retrospect. I played the game to initially romance Jumin, and bitterly realized I couldn't immediately, and chose Jahee instead. Now looking back I know playing her route greatly contributed to me realizing I was aromantic. The idea of entering QPR with a swag autistic girl and having a coffee shop together was like a Godsend of an ending to me, though I understand entirely why others did not find it satisfactory lol.
Waited years for this, and just by seeing the name, I'm not disappointed. Yoosung was actually my first route because as a teenage boy at the time of MM, I related hard to him.
I first played mm when I was much younger than yoosung and I thought that he was a college student, and not that young, 20 is pretty old. Now that I’m older than him… I understand that yoosung is baby
jaehee is literally the only realistic route in the game. starting off slow as friends, no hurries, no kissing etc. i like the concept of mc and jaehee being besties and owning a cute bakery more too.
as someone who has watched both of these videos and not played a second of mystic messenger, i love the way these routes are summarized and the generally relaxed tone of these videos. thank you for making them! i’ll definitely watch any that come out in the future!
i'm honestly so glad to hear you talk about how iffy the conflict with yoosung and v in yoosung's route. to me, i've always interpreted yoosung to be implied to have some form of psychosis and paranoia, that was either caused or exacerbated by rika's death. so when the v conflict came around i really wish the solution had been less "you need to trust v because well he's family" and more "you need to examine why you so heavily mistrust v and try to examine him from a perspective less fueled by paranoia." because in all honesty, yoosung is right to have doubts about v, i just don't think the route of that distrust is what it should be. obviously that's not how its handled in game but its how i like to ease the weirdness of that part of his route.

This is an incredibly insightful summary and analysis of these routes and I know it's been a few years, but I'd love to see this series rounded out with the rest of the cast! Not sure if you're aware, but mint is the word Koreans use for the color that is entirely V's hair-eye color scheme. So Mint Eye is directly referencing V's eyes.
Ahhh, new video! Jaehee's route was my first and absolute favorite bc it's just so silly and wonderfully sapphic. V's final scene in it holds a very special place in my heart bc it's absolutely wild, that man is a menace in this route. I do feel bad that Jumin's left prolly on the verge of a mental breakdown between work and losing the two relationships he relied on most and his lifelong best friend's self destruction, but that's why we have the Jumin route to give him the best possible ending.
Jaehee bad end ideas: BRE: You dont talk to her enough and she over works herself to the point of exhaustion (like one of her endings) and she quits working for Jumin and leaves the RFA to have a break. She doesnt contact MC or anyone again. BRE 2 or BE: You try to confess your feelings to Jaehee but bc you werent active enough in the server/you didnt pick the right choices she does not reciprocate these feelinsg and friendzones you to the point of actively being uncomfortable around you and avoiding you. (Aka; Every gay's worst nightmare) Since cheritz liked these; BE: MC flirts too much with Zen and you make Jaehee jealous and get a bad end. Jaehee tells MC how much she betrayed her trust or tells MC (or someone and MC/player reads the chat) that she thought there was something more between her and MC but she guesses she was wrong. BE/BRE: MC/you try to hook Jaehee up with Zen too much/ you ignore the chat too much and the two get together. Jaehee friendzones MC.
I enjoyed Jaehee's route so much, but as gay as I was (and still am) I couldn't help but to love 707's route. I related to the way he is written in certain general manners and how his way of loving is written, remembering it really makes a couple of things click. I'm really exited for the next video!

I absolutely love Jaehee’s route cause wether or not you read it as platonic or romantic I think the idea of being able to say “I don’t need no man” and run away with the only other female character in a romance centric game is incredibly powerful and also just really fucking funny to me
Back when this game came out I played every route, got every ending, particpated in every chat, got every call and message -- basically, this game had such a grip on me that i couldnt help but want to see everything. All these years later and I can still firmly say that Jaehee and Yoosung's routes are my absolute favorites. Its a bit odd to say this about mystic messenger (with all the eccentric plot lines briefly touched on in casual routes and more apparent in deep routes and another story) but they're genuinely just so grounded, relatable, and touching. A lot of the flaws you brought up here have weighed on my enjoyment after all these years but whenever I remember basically any phone call with yoosung I tend to overlook these problems (it also helps that both these characters helped me realize my sexuality lmao)
So i am gonna be honest i initially was very wary on clicking this video or any mysme related video in general because yoosung is my biggest comfort character and I feel extremely uncomfortable when people speak too negatively of him and mischaracterise him which is something the mysme fandom loves to do. I also happen to get deeply attached to him because at the time I got into Mysme which is mid 2020 I myself was dealing with the grief of losing a really good friend of mine to illness so yeah he does mean ALOT to me. Im glad to find your video and I loved your analysis.
legit i dont know if this has been propositioned before, but what came to mind for a bad end for Jaehee is her overworking herself to literal death, MC just keeps telling her to work hard even after distressing texts/phone calls, and upon the news of her passing, the RFA completely splits up. route ends with only MC attending her funeral (as everyone has reasons to not attend or not mentally/emotionally stable enough able to attend), MC wondering what they couldve done differently, thinking of everything they had left unsaid good MM videos as always! its nice diving back into it after a couple years or so of just forgetting it existed x)
Playing Jaehee's route reignited my love for testing out different way to prep coffee and teas, and while I wish they showed a kiss for her ending I think her handing a key to something she's passionate about is arguably even more romantic

25:45 I actually had a similar thought when I played jaehees route initially and I did some research on it! The set that Zen shows a picture of is actually a coffee set. Coffee sets and tea sets have similar shapes HOWEVER! A coffee sets pot will be rounder ("globular" as my source called it lol) and the cups themselves look like stretched teacups, which matches the picture. The saucers (plates under the cups) and the creamer pot are the same throughout both types of sets though.
OOOF, I'm just picking up on things as the video goes but God, Seven calling himself an "airhead" specifically in the Yoosung normal ending feels like a fucking slap to the face after playing another story 😭😭 IYKYK

I think it could of been fun to see a route where Jumin, Jaehee and yoosung (and maybe even the player) all work together. From what I remember Jaehee is only ever replaced as an assistant but the issue isn't Jumin is evil its that he has too much work that then gets pushed onto his assistant, having mutiple assistants, or getting Jahehee her own assistant would solve that. could of been fun as a nuetrual ending for one of them
I think one of Jahee's bad ends could be that she threatens to leak Jumin's companys secrets as revenge for Jumin overworking her, she demands a few million dollars from the company in exchange to not do that, then takes the money and moves to another country.

I have never played Mystic Messenger and am only really experiencing it through these video essays and any let's plays I look up when I'm curious, but I was absolutely delighted and invested in everything happening in Yoosung's route. From what little I knew of Mystic Messenger, I had a feeling he'd be my favorite and I'm glad to know my intuition is as good as ever lol

I still don't love Yoosung for my own reasons, but I like him. I also understand him more than when I first played the game. His route was always fun for me /despite/ it being Yoosung not because of him due to the amount of LORE and such that was revealed compared to other routes. As for Jaehee, I always imagined MC, Zen, and her being the ultimate throuple of RFA especially after Zen gave her the gift.

I remember getting Yoosung's good ending (with no cheats btw) & think it was the most amazing character growth I had ever experienced in fiction! Also, with how he matured little by little every day... I couldn't help find that incredibly attractive. I made art of him in his "mature" outfit!

Yoosung was my first route, which I guess isn't special, but I just fell in love with him immediately. He was so sweet, cute, adorable and so silly! He's thoughtful and fun to be around, as is everyone else, but he was the one closest to my age back then so it felt like I had friend when I was beginning to come out of my depressive episode. Over the years and after playing every single route, I've come to appreciate the others more; Zen & Saeran especially have climbed up the ladder of my favourites but even then, Yoosung just has a special place in my heart as 'the first one'. Now that I'm a college student just like him, I too have begun to face similiar struggles like finding motivation to just continue on and what I want to do. And watching your videos about MM has awaken a desire to replay the story again just to get a new perspective on everything, now that I have reached yet another chapter in my life. It's really hard to imagine how long it has been since its release and how much I've changed since then. I never really grapsed the complexicity of the overall theme and characters' development back then so these videos sure opened my eyes a bit. They're detailed, entertaining to watch and I like the small and final analysises you give. Thanks for your hard work! 🥛🍪
I remember being really confused with the name Yoosung gave the cat cause I put Lisa as the name for Mc in every game I play. I thought he named the cat after mc (which I thought it was cute) wasn’t till I looked up all the endings and when they mentioned the after end they still referred to the cat as Lisa that I realized that was not the case. It was just a funny coincidence lol
My best friend in middle school was a big fan of this game. Tbh, I looked down on it because of how much it over took her life back then. She had school but she would be up at 3 AM to hear these fictional characters talk. Now that I'm older though, I do see the appeal. This video essay has made me a Jaehee lover and the story that my friend told me has come in handy with understanding the more Rika, Seven, V, and Unknown story line. It seems pretty cool now, though I still wish my friend had taken better care of herself back then 😅

I actually really like the v/yoosung eye parallel! I think the fact that u mentioned about yoosung chooses to heal his eye is a really telling character moment. Unlike V, who chooses to be blinded by love and lack perspective, Yoosung actively chooses to heal. I feel like it drives home the idea that he can have an identity separated from his love, which was a thematic idea presented with rika, that he didn't really have an identity outside of her.
Anyone else like Jaehee's normal ending more than the good ending? In the good ending, we're straight up friendzoned, and in the normal ending Jaehee and Jumin are passionately fighting for our attention. Both seem pretty romantic to me, to be honest.

I am embarrassed to say I never really liked Jaehee when first playing the game, I fell in love with her not because of her route, but because in Saran's route, there's a phone call where she sings to MC a Taco jingle she heard from a commercial, it was the funniest and cutest thing ever and it really cheered me up from the depression that is Saran's route XD.
I absolutely love Yoosung’s route, but in the early parts I just kept mentally spraying him with a spray bottle every time he compared me to Rika
I'm on day 10 of Yoosung's route and I feel that. But also, I don't like his route overall for the same reason I didn't like Seven and Zen's routes: The plot (represented by Echo Girl and Mint Eye) takes away from the romance. (I love Yoosung though!)
As someone whose mother passed away not that long ago, Jaehee and Yoosung's stories always strike a chord with me. I see alot of myself in how they handle grief; Jaehee plunging herself into overworking, and Yoosung's dissociation, processing grief and reconciliation with two sides of a person you adored. I always read Yoosung's Rika obsession as someone who never processed their grief and was desperate to find some greater meaning to a traumatic event, essentially stuck in a bargaining/denial stage. There's flaws here and there, but in general, I really connected with these plot threads all these years later:)

I'm enjoying the number of people relying how they had their gay awakenings to Jahee's route, and it makes me laugh in retrospect. I played the game to initially romance Jumin, and bitterly realized I couldn't immediately, and chose Jahee instead. Now looking back I know playing her route greatly contributed to me realizing I was aromantic. The idea of entering QPR with a swag autistic girl and having a coffee shop together was like a Godsend of an ending to me, though I understand entirely why others did not find it satisfactory lol.
Waited years for this, and just by seeing the name, I'm not disappointed.
Yoosung was actually my first route because as a teenage boy at the time of MM, I related hard to him.
I first played mm when I was much younger than yoosung and I thought that he was a college student, and not that young, 20 is pretty old. Now that I’m older than him… I understand that yoosung is baby

i'm honestly so glad to hear you talk about how iffy the conflict with yoosung and v in yoosung's route. to me, i've always interpreted yoosung to be implied to have some form of psychosis and paranoia, that was either caused or exacerbated by rika's death. so when the v conflict came around i really wish the solution had been less "you need to trust v because well he's family" and more "you need to examine why you so heavily mistrust v and try to examine him from a perspective less fueled by paranoia." because in all honesty, yoosung is right to have doubts about v, i just don't think the route of that distrust is what it should be. obviously that's not how its handled in game but its how i like to ease the weirdness of that part of his route.

Not sure if you're aware, but mint is the word Koreans use for the color that is entirely V's hair-eye color scheme. So Mint Eye is directly referencing V's eyes.

Ahhh, new video! Jaehee's route was my first and absolute favorite bc it's just so silly and wonderfully sapphic. V's final scene in it holds a very special place in my heart bc it's absolutely wild, that man is a menace in this route. I do feel bad that Jumin's left prolly on the verge of a mental breakdown between work and losing the two relationships he relied on most and his lifelong best friend's self destruction, but that's why we have the Jumin route to give him the best possible ending.
Jaehee bad end ideas:
BRE: You dont talk to her enough and she over works herself to the point of exhaustion (like one of her endings) and she quits working for Jumin and leaves the RFA to have a break. She doesnt contact MC or anyone again.
BRE 2 or BE: You try to confess your feelings to Jaehee but bc you werent active enough in the server/you didnt pick the right choices she does not reciprocate these feelinsg and friendzones you to the point of actively being uncomfortable around you and avoiding you. (Aka; Every gay's worst nightmare)

BE: MC flirts too much with Zen and you make Jaehee jealous and get a bad end. Jaehee tells MC how much she betrayed her trust or tells MC (or someone and MC/player reads the chat) that she thought there was something more between her and MC but she guesses she was wrong.
BE/BRE: MC/you try to hook Jaehee up with Zen too much/ you ignore the chat too much and the two get together. Jaehee friendzones MC.
Oh god, the bad ending where you get with Zen would be soooo much more fun (and painful) if Jaehee actually confronted MC about the betrayal

I absolutely love Jaehee’s route cause wether or not you read it as platonic or romantic I think the idea of being able to say “I don’t need no man” and run away with the only other female character in a romance centric game is incredibly powerful and also just really fucking funny to me
Back when this game came out I played every route, got every ending, particpated in every chat, got every call and message -- basically, this game had such a grip on me that i couldnt help but want to see everything. All these years later and I can still firmly say that Jaehee and Yoosung's routes are my absolute favorites. Its a bit odd to say this about mystic messenger (with all the eccentric plot lines briefly touched on in casual routes and more apparent in deep routes and another story) but they're genuinely just so grounded, relatable, and touching. A lot of the flaws you brought up here have weighed on my enjoyment after all these years but whenever I remember basically any phone call with yoosung I tend to overlook these problems (it also helps that both these characters helped me realize my sexuality lmao)
So i am gonna be honest i initially was very wary on clicking this video or any mysme related video in general because yoosung is my biggest comfort character and I feel extremely uncomfortable when people speak too negatively of him and mischaracterise him which is something the mysme fandom loves to do. I also happen to get deeply attached to him because at the time I got into Mysme which is mid 2020 I myself was dealing with the grief of losing a really good friend of mine to illness so yeah he does mean ALOT to me.

legit i dont know if this has been propositioned before, but what came to mind for a bad end for Jaehee is her overworking herself to literal death, MC just keeps telling her to work hard even after distressing texts/phone calls, and upon the news of her passing, the RFA completely splits up. route ends with only MC attending her funeral (as everyone has reasons to not attend or not mentally/emotionally stable enough able to attend), MC wondering what they couldve done differently, thinking of everything they had left unsaid

25:45 I actually had a similar thought when I played jaehees route initially and I did some research on it! The set that Zen shows a picture of is actually a coffee set. Coffee sets and tea sets have similar shapes HOWEVER! A coffee sets pot will be rounder ("globular" as my source called it lol) and the cups themselves look like stretched teacups, which matches the picture. The saucers (plates under the cups) and the creamer pot are the same throughout both types of sets though.
OOOF, I'm just picking up on things as the video goes but God, Seven calling himself an "airhead" specifically in the Yoosung normal ending feels like a fucking slap to the face after playing another story 😭😭 IYKYK

I think it could of been fun to see a route where Jumin, Jaehee and yoosung (and maybe even the player) all work together. From what I remember Jaehee is only ever replaced as an assistant but the issue isn't Jumin is evil its that he has too much work that then gets pushed onto his assistant, having mutiple assistants, or getting Jahehee her own assistant would solve that. could of been fun as a nuetrual ending for one of them
I think one of Jahee's bad ends could be that she threatens to leak Jumin's companys secrets as revenge for Jumin overworking her, she demands a few million dollars from the company in exchange to not do that, then takes the money and moves to another country.

I've never played the games and don't really intend to but I've been doing a deep dive into them and this video series is by far the most detailed and cohesive guide of what actually happens in the game. I have never played Mystic Messenger and am only really experiencing it through these video essays and any let's plays I look up when I'm curious, but I was absolutely delighted and invested in everything happening in Yoosung's route. From what little I knew of Mystic Messenger, I had a feeling he'd be my favorite and I'm glad to know my intuition is as good as ever lol

Just finished watching- Thank you once again for all your incredible commentary and in depth analysis. The part with Jaehee crying with Zen still manages to jerk a tear from me... gosh damnit. You mention things and point out parallels and themes I hadn't even originally noticed too- I love these videos you make.
I still don't love Yoosung for my own reasons, but I like him. I also understand him more than when I first played the game. His route was always fun for me /despite/ it being Yoosung not because of him due to the amount of LORE and such that was revealed compared to other routes.
As for Jaehee, I always imagined MC, Zen, and her being the ultimate throuple of RFA especially after Zen gave her the gift.
I just wanted to say that I've been loving this video series. The way you discuss and analyse the game is wonderful honestly. While I was watching this, despite it being such a long video... the only thought in my mind was I didn't want the video to end because I enjoyed listening to it so much. I remember getting Yoosung's good ending (with no cheats btw) & think it was the most amazing character growth I had ever experienced in fiction! Also, with how he matured little by little every day... I couldn't help find that incredibly attractive. I made art of him in his "mature" outfit!

Yoosung was my first route, which I guess isn't special, but I just fell in love with him immediately. He was so sweet, cute, adorable and so silly! He's thoughtful and fun to be around, as is everyone else, but he was the one closest to my age back then so it felt like I had friend when I was beginning to come out of my depressive episode. Over the years and after playing every single route, I've come to appreciate the others more; Zen & Saeran especially have climbed up the ladder of my favourites but even then, Yoosung just has a special place in my heart as 'the first one'.
Now that I'm a college student just like him, I too have begun to face similiar struggles like finding motivation to just continue on and what I want to do. And watching your videos about MM has awaken a desire to replay the story again just to get a new perspective on everything, now that I have reached yet another chapter in my life. It's really hard to imagine how long it has been since its release and how much I've changed since then. I never really grapsed the complexicity of the overall theme and characters' development back then so these videos sure opened my eyes a bit. They're detailed, entertaining to watch and I like the small and final analysises you give. Thanks for your hard work!

I remember being really confused with the name Yoosung gave the cat cause I put Lisa as the name for Mc in every game I play. I thought he named the cat after mc (which I thought it was cute) wasn’t till I looked up all the endings and when they mentioned the after end they still referred to the cat as Lisa that I realized that was not the case. It was just a funny coincidence lol
My best friend in middle school was a big fan of this game. Tbh, I looked down on it because of how much it over took her life back then. She had school but she would be up at 3 AM to hear these fictional characters talk. Now that I'm older though, I do see the appeal. This video essay has made me a Jaehee lover and the story that my friend told me has come in handy with understanding the more Rika, Seven, V, and Unknown story line. It seems pretty cool now, though I still wish my friend had taken better care of herself back then 😅
