This show pales a shitload compared to it, the whole part around 6:00 is ripped straight from it. Not to mention there is barely any ACTUAL marching in this, it's all run around scatter play a bit, then more running and scattering. Then some B's dance sequence.
It's hard to say whether DCI is going through an awkward transitional period to something better. I wish they'd collectively realize how unimpressive electronic enhancements are. Then maybe they could rethink the faux ballet. It takes years of training before curving and waving your arms and torso stops looking like ballerina pantomime, and in the meantime we're waiting for you to get back to your primary talent. The technical demands keep climbing, the routines keep getting busier (mainly visually) and the result is not a more entertaining product. I've been watching since the mid-80s and think it was cooler then, not more "impressive" but a more entertaining competition, the different corps having stronger individual identities. More comfortable flexible uniforms are a step forward, but the Vaudeville fashion approach makes the word "corps" nonsensical. Anyway this show is technically impressive (very) and conceptually opaque. The music isn't bad. The drum features are eye-wateringly good but they spend a lot of time not playing.
Digital media and amplification actually create a rift between the player and audience. One can only assume the reason the designers force the kids to prance around in androgynous pajamas, doing summer-salts and pole dances is because the judges reward such behavior. I see it as an indicator of how much has been lost in the transition from analog to digital, within the human psyche.
@@edm3336 Digital interface applies to the show designs, too, which of course have long been done with fancy software. The dancing and prancing is mainly for the high-cam effect, where the people are more like flowing pixels, as opposed to marching ants, that meld into a larger picture. It rarely looks good up close. The total visual effect of a DCI show has always been like a mesmerizing screen-saver of shifting patterns, but the drills today, with the addition of large movable props and other field enhancements, feel increasingly computer-generated. The amplified sounds only make it more apparent.
Drum Corps has now become "prop til you drop" and see how many body movements you can throw in a theater production. But if you think about it the younger kids have NO IDEA what Drum Corps was all about in the 80's or even 90's when you marched a show and played your butts off. Today’s Drum Corp sucks massive donkey balls! It use to be about the music and marching. With all the dancing around, microphones, talking, it ruins its. Blue Devils, SCV, Madison and others from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were the best. Once 2000 came DCI went down hill.
Agree. The main draw for me is the good brass playing and the marching, so yeah I can't stand the electronic enhancements. And scv's new era metropolis show made me start enjoying colorguard a lot more. But yeah they've made changes that cheapen and even dumb down the product, for me. My guess is that they're trying to appeal to fans of pop entertainment. Problem is, is that a lot of their fans are musicians.
Ok boomer, nonetheless these shows are still incredible and all these “gadgets” as you like to call them are props and they are there to help add to the show and performance.
Ok.. so Blue Devils pretty much changed everything about Drum Corp over and over.. in the last 5 years they changed it so much that now All the Drum Corp's look the same and sound the same. And now for whatever reason.. they are the only ones that actually look like a drum corp? ... nice play?.. or is Drum Corp pretty much over.? I dunno but this sport .. even though it always undergoes change.. well.. its not the same thing anymore. Nothing resembles anythng of past.. the new resembles itself.. and Its starting to lose its magic. Good job.
I just don't understand what happened to drum and bugle shows anymore. Why do you need band instruments, piped in music and track meets.Whatever happened to playing music that people recognize and MARCHING AND MANEUVERING. I am an old player and would rather sit in my recliner and watch old shows than go to see the crap that drum corps has become now. The players can still play,no doubt about that, but it is just not the same.
The music is so vapid that it erases itself in real time. We have heard the same climbing extended major 7th chords so any times so that we have become numb to them. Give us something fresh and risk not winning. Sometimes you will fall on your face (like SCV did) but you won't be predictable, which is arguably worse.
Mixed into all that blood sweat and tears.....and incredible artistry !!! Is a damn synthesizer !! I'm sorry DCI.....I just can't !! YOU ARE TAKING EVERYTHING CORPS IS... Dial it back a notch ! Having said all that.....aside from the enhanced sound.....masterful show !!!!!!!!

This show really doesn't catch me like felliniesque. The show is good and well executed but the BLUECOATS are taking it this year.
They got first
Drum Corps shows are like going to the circus. Too many gadgets on the field. Soon they will introduce the elephants and the tigers.
Ok boomer, nonetheless these shows are still incredible and all these “gadgets” as you like to call them are props and they are there to help add to the show and performance.
Man it’s really great of you to share, how exactly is a few walls too many gadgets and if that’s not what your referring sorry you make no sense
Micah Lall-Trail how does it limit their drill design? Their props don't really limit drill
Micah Lall-Trail these props are where people do not need to be
Micah Lall-Trail why?
just won
Ok.. so Blue Devils pretty much changed everything about Drum Corp over and over.. in the last 5 years they changed it so much that now All the Drum Corp's look the same and sound the same. Good job.
Check out Madison. They are not clean, but they play and march and excite the crowd.
The show doesn't deserve to win, yet somehow they will be 1st over the BlueCoats, Crown and Boston. Also who mics the core??? That is lame.
When does thè music starts?great show. But for me, get back to thè roots, less electra
Richard Schadler then watch Crown’s 2019 show

I do not feel emotionally connected to the show.

BY ADDING ELECTRONICS ON THE FIELD !!! There is a term for electronics on a field.....it's called an EDM Concert !!!! aka Ultra Fest etc !..... These masters of their instruments and marching work wayyyy to hard for you to allow a damn synthesizer to over shadow what they are doing on the field !!!!!!! Please reconsider !!!! Dial it back a notch ! Having said all that.....aside from the enhanced sound.....masterful show !!!!!!!!
Inb4 Ok boomer
LITERAL REPACKAGING OF METAMORPH
Don’t fix what’s not broken
This isn't very similar to metamorph, 2018 def does though, it kind of had that same shitty repackaged sound at some parts like jagged line did. If anything this show is more like ink
I'm happy they won the bluecoats show was butt
Back in my day, you actually marched. Freemasons weren't running the activity into the ground as well.
trap4dafu2k0fit what the fuck
Yeah I miss the times when your bugles could only play half of a chromatic scale.
Brandon Klein Hey, it was louder than anything today, no mics or electronic crap either.
@@trap4dafu2k0fit yeah and the entire show was completely symmetrical and easily cleaned.
Boomer
I feeel nothing watching this. Boring. This is absolutely not entertaining and the best thing about it: they will probably make gold with this whatsoever you want to call this- it’s not DCI for sure. BD had such amazing shows till 2014. After 2014 you have gotten this: basically artistic, modern trash. Not going to spend a dime on this kind of corps anymore. Where is the fun and entertainment?
If you can listen to that ballad and feel nothing, I could argue that you're a robot
I probably am .. or I’m maybe just German 😄
@@thatcat7199 or perhaps we have heard much better ballads in the past, this is just ho-hum. The polite golf claps from the crowd tells you everything you need to know.
Ray Peery you realize that this is shot in the nosebleeds and the main portion of the crowd is on the lower level making the “Polite golf claps” much further away
@@thatcat7199 the Emperor has no clothes. It's BOOOOOORING.
too messy
I love the Drum Corps and these folks play their hearts out and do great work but for gods sake DCI please ban the use of all these props it is taking away from the shows and killing the basic concept of drum corps Playing Music, Marching in step and doing formations. If I want a show with props I will go to a broadway show. Every time I watch these shows now I just lose interest.
Ugh, this thing isn't even clean yet. We're gonna get stuck with another BD title this year. Sigh.
Runjinrun2 looks pretty clean to me

Not wowww! 😬
I see marching has officially been replaced by park & blow, running around aimlessly and pushing a bunch of stuff from here to there... shame.
Crown is a perfect example of a corps marching a way harder show and getting penalized for it
Blue's Clues for Fools the BlueDevils did it for years and got tired of not winning. It's very similar to old Carmel in BOA. Now that they're playing the game like everybody else they win every year.
Nick Niehaus got tired of not winning? They’re the most awarded corps out there. They’ve won doing almost every style of show
Don't forget the electric violin, electric piano and sousaphone!
Nick Niehaus did you say... That Blue Devils... the team that has won the most... got tired of not winning?
Too much garbage on the field and not a melody to be found anywhere.
Wow boring. sad. honestly disappointing
