    Having worked for IMAX as a DMR artist, I can tell you that the very first film not shot on IMAX but converted to the IMAX format was "Spiderman 3" (2007). My brother, who was an executive at IMAX at the time this occurred, approached Sam Raimi to convince him to have his film converted to IMAX. Sam Raimi gave IMAX about 20 minutes from "Spiderman 3" to work with. Apparently, at the end of the screening of that converted section Sam Raimi was so excited that he was able to convince the production company to increase the budget to convert "Spiderman 3" completely to IMAX. Since then, IMAX has converted many films shot conventionally to the IMAX format.
    IMAX is actually more popular in China than anywhere else. As of December 31, 2020, China has well over 750 IMAX screens. Which is the most IMAX screens of any other country, including the US.There are more than 1,500 IMAX screens around the world.

      I never saw any of that written down so thanks for the info!
      That’s really interesting though, so would you say on something like Dune which they shot digitally, they converted it onto a 70mm projection to show in 1.43:1?

    • @TEDodd

      @@AngusDaviesDP Dune wasn't released on 70mm. It was digital only. 1.43:1 presentation required dual laser setup (aka Grand Theater). There were like half a dozen venues the USA that could show it that way.

      So how was the process for Spiderman 3 different than Apollo 13? Apollo 13 is considered to be the first DMR movie, right?

    • @utthapa
      @utthapa ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, Spider-Man 2 was also converted to IMAX format, despite not being shot on IMAX. The first feature film that was converted to IMAX format but not shot on it, was Apollo 13. The film was shortened to fit the limited length of the IMAX platters and the aspect ratio was expanded (not cropped) to 1.66:1 from its 35mm negative. A DVD was released of this IMAX version which was cropped down to 1.78:1.

      @@baIIshevik I'll paste a chef's kiss review by some random gentleman Steve Brown on the internet:
      The most overblown tosh I’ve seen in years. An hysterical orgy of jump cuts almost designed to obscure the narrative. Endless shots of obsessive indecipherable scrawling on blackboards. Constant employment of that most irritating and hackneyed device, deep discussion on the move. Fabulously distracting use of flashes of fire, electricity, explosions and splitting of the atom throughout: random and unilluminating. Who are these characters? What are their relationships? Up pops the usually dependable Florence Pugh replaced as love interest moments later by Emily Blunt, also a habitually strong turn. By turns black and white and colour, the narrative felt wilfully confusing. Tom Conti’s hammy Einstein was a welcome relief from the endless parade of indistinguishable scientists in suits storming in and out of different, ill explained rooms. Matt Damon exploded occasionally over nothing more than the requirement to provide drama. Awful dramatic music, completely unconnected to the pace of events depicted, signalled an extraordinary event at any moment. These failed to materialise.
      Nuclear fission is a fairly complex concept for all but the experts I would suggest. This film did nothing to illuminate it for a wider audience. Tricksy, shallow and 3 frikkin hours of it. We ran out half way through to conduct a successful dry martini experiment at home.

    I find open matte (1.78:1) to be my favourite happy medium. I have a somewhat rarer Alliance blu-ray release of SEVEN that's open matte. It's gorgeous. Fincher crops all his films in post. The IMAX scenes from The Dark Knight on the 4K release switch to 1.78 and they also look stellar (same with INTERSTELLAR). I just wish more filmmakers would release open matte's. I worked as a projectionist for a few summers in high school and got to thread a few IMAX shows. The film size is INSANE and the whole process was like being at NASA.

    • @AngusDaviesDP

      It's a great midground, Ah cool! I really need to see Se7en again actually. All of Nolan's films look incredible at home as well, open matte would be a really nice touch on home releases, but I can't see anyone apart from Arrow or maybe Criterion doing that if they even got the permission of the filmmaker. Ah cool! I've heard it's absolutely massive, I've held a bit of a 70mm print of 2001, and that was huge, can't even begin to imagine the size of IMAX.

    Thanks! Before the video ended I got online and spent a little over $13,000 on a Blackmagic ursa mini 12k….. now it’s time to do re-shoots on my short film “Tars Origins” it’s a short story I am directing, producing and financing myself, and is an origins story about Tars from Interstellar and what gave him the personality he had in that fantastic movie. My mother is a veteran from the Marine Corps (Like Tars) and I am using real Marines that I have at my disposal to give the film a more lifelike experience. Lots of work to be done and unfortunately I will have to use some CGI which to be frank is not cheap. Also trying to replicate Tars (practically) in real life is much easier said than done lol. I would love to shoot on 70 mm IMAX film but this camera will be the next best thing for now. I saw Interstellar in full frame 70 mm IMAX film and still to this day I have never ever experienced anything quite like it, except for when I saw Tenet and Dunkirk in IMAX 70 mm film, but Interstellar was the one that blew my mind and inspired me on this long journey to create somewhat of a spinoff of my favorite movie. Although quite expensive I think it will be well worth it in the long run. Even though I put a dent in my wallet thank you for this video as my camera not being in IMAX was definitely setting me back at least $13,000 later I may be that much closer to perfection. I’m quite sure that is the least of my expenses as I will need much more to get that camera properly shooting. Again thank you and great video! Keep up the good work!

    Keeping the perspective distortion due to focal length constant (let’s say shooting at 50mm focal length), since the image on 70mm imax film is 10x the size of s35 film, one would tend to shoot it more close to the subject for keeping them of the similar size on the overall image.

      It all depends on the aperture they shoot at, stopped down a lot and it can be the exact same as pulling focus on a m43 camera even. And also, having characters closer to the camera will make it even harder to pull focus since the DoF will be shorter, so your comment contradicts it self :)

    • @sean_ta
      @sean_ta 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. A wide angle is the larger focal length which causes a bend in the picture. To understand it well, you should grab a camera with a 70mm focal length lens and then with both eyes open see the difference between the two! one with bare eyes and the other one trow the lens! the reason that I said 70 is because it's the same realistic picture trow the lens that is exactly what our eyes will see! when you see it you will notice that the pictures are the same but the one trow the lens is limited by height and width! IMAX shows you a wider and bigger point of view!
      when you tested that, change the lens to 125 instead of 70, and then you notice the difference between wide angle (larger focal length) and bigger and wider view (IMAX)

    That hot sauce line gets more grating the more I hear it. The perfect horrible combination of bored delivery, shitty writing and horrible comedic instincts.

      Haha, I get that, but it’s an easy way to transition.

      @@AngusDaviesDP You mean for your video or as a filmmaking technique to transition from a dialogue scene to a fight scene?
      If it's the former, I was not at all criticizing your choice to include it at all, merely commenting on it on it's own. It's just a really bad line!
      If it's the latter, I'd be interested if you wish to elaborate.

      Just for the video! I do it with a ton of clips, and this just happened to be the one I used in this video.
      It is a really cringe line though...

      True, but it is still an IMAX capable camera and films shot on it are technically Shot In IMAX (according to a list of IMAX certified cameras)

    Great information mate. But surely you see the irony ruining your own video with silly flashy subs dead centre of the screen 😅

    It's a load of shite, flogged to get people out of their Netflix seat before cinemas die.

      I think it's overused a lot at the moment, but I it's hard to deny that a true 1.43:1 laser print isn't one of the best ways to watch a film. Just a shame so few films are shot on it.

      @@AngusDaviesDP I think a well told story will still engross the viewer when it's projected onto a nappy from a smart phone. But that notion would kill the industry that controls how we view art in a day.

      Oh 100%, I mean we see that with Unsane and Tangerine, shot on iPhone's, but were incredible of bringing audiences in.
