- Hello friends! If you remember: I celebrated Distaff Days with my patrons by sending one another floof gifts. Yes, we send wool and spinning fiber all over the globe. And after a month of waiting, my package has arrived as well. So, let's open my gift from my secret saint distaff (and oooff the goodies were so good. Rare breeds! Wool Roserary!), load up my distaff again and start spindle spinning some of that wool. The wool I chose to spin for now is American Tunis, a crunchy squishy yarn that's right up my alley.

I think you should use the fibers in this package to make a granny square pillow. That way you can keep it all as "one project" - and who doesn't need more pillows.
As an ex-protestant christian with Church Trauma™️ I'm always confused and shocked by how lovely and accepting my Catholic friends are. (In a good way, of course!) So thanks for spreading those good vibes. The world sure needs it right now.
Also, I'm slightly jealous of all those rare breeds! What a generous gift from the sender! I hope they bring you lots of joy!
I feel like a lot of younger catholics nowadays are more about trying to live like Jesus than they are about the church as an institution. Or that's what my experience is. We're very critical of the conservatism and the institution, and rather want to be as open and accepting as Jesus was.

That wool rosary is so lovely! Perfect blend of Catholic and Orthodox! Makes the historian in me squeal in delight as well as short-circuiting my brain a little bit. hehehe Also so happy to see that you spin on / wind the turtle on your turkish spindle the same as me! I always think that as long as I do it half as well as Mijn Wolden, it's perfect enough for me. :)
Oh yes, the historian in me squeeled too. (Especially because I know I will never ever get to Mount Athos myself)

The breed samples are so cool! Such a lovely thing to pick to send to someone on the other side of the world, a little taste of local breeds! Looking forward to hearing your reviews of the other two breeds too whenever you do spin them up

I love the rosary! So beautiful and personal. My friend has a small flock of Tunis, and she gave me her fleeces, so thats what I'm spinning too. I love it.
I've been trying to learn to draft with my left hand (the struggle is real) - I've found that if hold the fiber supply between my index and middle fingers and then use my thumb and ring-finger to draw the fiber it helps - that way you can control the twist entering into the single with your thumb (I usually do this with my right thumb when using a drop spindle but if drawing with you're left hand you can't). TH-camr Josefin Waltin has posted a video of herself spinning with an antique French spindle while drawing the fiber in this way.
Also, it is extremely encouraging to see that you've also found this tricky - I, too, have been hugely frustrated by how difficult this is to do
Ah so amazing. Now I am in the mood for spinning but I have no spindle with me traveling. Was supposed to fly home today but instead i went on a night train and now a local bus to see the Dalai Lama in south india. Wish they would announce these things more than 3 days ahead. Knitting on a hat while watching you to make the bus ride more enjoyable. Greetings

Ooh! now I really want to try all 3 of my clasped spindles to see if I have a similar experience.
One of the differences I have noticed with clasped spindles is that with a longer, belted distaff I have a much easier time drafting the wool than with a handheld distaff

The American Tunis is an interesting breed. It is actually descended from Tunisian sheep. Evie of the JillianEve channel might have made a video about it, she spun some as part of a breed study if I remember correctly.
I have seen a video on it indeed, don't remember if it was Evie's or not, but maybe that's why I gravitated towards it

Did she have gift marked on the front of the package I know we have to when we do our custom labels here makes it easier for the recipient lovely presents and look like you enjoyed it
Yeah, she did, really clearly, also with the correct tariff codes and everything (this is why having a picture of the box helped me with disputing the 36€)

I finally got around to watching but only took in part of the video because I woke up an hour and a half ago and am still groggy. Winter! (I need to try a distaff at some point. I wonder if it helps for support spindling?)

Quick question- if the package has the word “Gift” on the outside, does that get it passed the customs charge?
If it is on an official customs form (as it was on my package), with the right tariff codes, it should yes.
