    Love it as kids we rode everything in Hawaii from pillow cases full of air to mats, drift wood whatever we could get... This was an every day use with paipo boards back in 60's 70's so good to see Mahalo

    I met this guy after watching this. We regularly mat surf together on the Victorian south coast and he is the nicest bloke you will ever meet.

    What a great vid. Full of stoke. Just got a mat, battling with rotator cuff issues, but realising it’s all good. 👍🏽

    Love this video and the others. Just took my mat out of the closet :) Have been out 3 times on it; I feel like I need about an hour on it to get it down, and I'm getting it in 3 second increments. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Starting to ride a mat definitely needs patience. In my case it took more than 5 sessions before I got a glimpse of what makes the mat so special. When I started riding them I mixed mat surfing with riding a log. After I while I just rode the mat more and eventually I completely stoped riding surfboards. For me it is the best surf craft there is. Give it some time :)

    Nice I have been surfing mat awhile all over the world. Especially when I need to rest, it is so easy once you learn to trim but easier to say than done. It is a perfect combo to any board and it is so fast.

    Thanks Justin, have just ordered a pair of Duck Feet fins. Tried my surf mat at UrbnSurf in Melbourne - the wave (Intermediate) suits surf mats really well, helping me improve my skills. Had a few funny looks of course!

    Oh man. I just got a mat and took it out a couple of times. It’s been frustrating! Need to put more time in on it. Hoping to get at least a couple waves to keep me interested in it. I haven’t even got the one good wave to make you want to come back to do it again. You make it look so easy. I’m here to say that it definitely isn’t. Not at first anyway. Great video! It’s inspiring me to get back out there again. Thanks.

    • @FRINGESURFERTV
      @FRINGESURFERTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It took me between 5-10 sessions to get some waves before I felt the mat was starting to take off. And it took me many more sessions before I could get this kind of waves consistently. In my opinion, it is this initial learning curve, why so many surfmats end up in the closet and not in the ocean where they belong and thrive.
      You just have to be persistent, as Justin describes in the video. It's totally worth it, give it some time :)

    Bogeyboards with slick bottoms also have more speed and control .

    • @robinthomsoncomposer
      @robinthomsoncomposer 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Only if the wave is powerful enough. A booger will never catch a surf mat on a less critical wave and I know that as I have spent considerable time on both.

    I support anyone who wants to get in the water and however they want to do it. I kneeboard surf. People with physical problems that keep them standup surfing should try a kneeboard. Even if you bellysurf it you will have more speed and control and be able to ride fast breaking waves.

  • @3diabolos

    Why not a bodyboard?

    • @FRINGESURFERTV
      @FRINGESURFERTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because a surfmat behaves and feels differently. A mat is like an air cushion between you and the wave. It's pliable and adjusts itself to the water surface. It's a different experience of frictionless glide. Some people prefer that :)

    • @3diabolos
      @3diabolos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FRINGESURFERTV well is an option too. You should try bellyboards too. The feeling is awesome. Is like bodysurfing but with a thin wood board with a lot of flex. Also you can glide really fast across the face of the wave and pass all the sections. Perfect for long waves and tubes. It doesn't matter what you ride, the important is too have fun out there 🤙🤙
