    PSA: "Don't get shot point blank with a slug to the chest" - John Lovell. Words to live by, literally. I say yes to the third taco just because I have your back and what surprised me was the fact Ben was wearing ski goggles while you have the cool tactishades.

    • @WardenWolf
      @WardenWolf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, pretty much. Even Level IIIa soft armor will technically _stop_ a slug, but in that case you're dead anyway as it turns your ribcage into a Claymore. Don't get shot with a slug, no matter what armor you're wearing. You're gonna have a bad day.

      Velocity or density or ideally BOTH for AP work. If it's not cooking over 3000fps it is unlikely to go through plate.

    Test out the Battle Steel Level IV plates. They're 5.5 pound hybrid plates. I've seen LOTS of tests on these affordable plates as they're cheap enough for independent people to test, and they do indeed hold up. I have a set in my lightweight scout armor rig (10x12 plates instead of my usual 11x14, and no side plates).

    All: Several years ago during studies on composite overwrapped launch tubes and barrels the researchers came up with a term called "critical sound speed". This term explains why laminate armor works: The impact dissipates energy to the media at the limit of its sound speed. Square root of modulus over density. As an example rubber has no STRENGTH but capturing it between strong materials makes it transfer the load as if it's absolutely rigid because it's sound speed is low (natural rubber is as low as 25 fps). The "sandwich" also changes the direction of a shaped charge jet which is why they're used on light armor vehicles that cannot take a reactive pack.

  • @Marc-ky5zu
    @Marc-ky5zu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The heavier the projectile and the faster it's going, the more kinetic energy it delivers. That distance of deformation is commonly referred to as “back-face deformation,” and by itself can still be lethal. In many cases, trauma pads can be used to lessen the effect of back-face deformation. Lighter may not always not be the way to go. How much do you love yourself? Love the channel Mr. John!

    I looked at these AR500 A3 lvl 3+ plates for quite awhile initially, the weight was really nice but the price point and potential spalling ended up being deal breakers for me. I wasn't finding enough videos at the time on if they spalled or not so I ended up going with some lvl 4 Highcom 4SAS&'s instead. Heavier, but I was left happy overall with my decision. Interesting to see a more in-depth review of these, thanks!

      There is no potential for spawl. And reviews proving that have been out since the day these plates released.

    • @alphawolfgang173
      @alphawolfgang173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      buildup coats usually stop fragmentation, and if you are still not comfortable with that there are frag sleeves for like $50 that solve that problem. fragmentation IS a threat when you have a bare plate and thin carrier, but buildup coats and any decent thicker carrier really negate that issue. the multi hit capability of steel with the buildup coat/frag sleeve are great, especially if youre in a static position or riding in a vehicle where you probably will take multiple hits before being able to get to any cover.

    • @darkangelgaming1117
      @darkangelgaming1117 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RTTGunsGear The reviews I saw were either directly from the company, which I don't always trust from any company due to marketing gimmicks, or folks on YT who weren't running the plates through the same set of criteria that I would have preferred to see. I am not dinging the design, but to me the possibility of molten hot metal shavings ending up in my jugular had me pass back then. I am sure John's testing put more people's minds at ease like mine. I got to see it getting caught within the coating/ballistic cloth. They didn't use to put the ballistic cloth in there, it was just the rubber before, you know? When that rubber would take a few hits it would just fall off back in the day and all you had was solid metal again that could spall.

    • @SamuraiEAC
      @SamuraiEAC ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkangelgaming1117 The steel strike face of the A3 plate is very thin. It isn't designed to stop the bullet, but instead it is there to slow it down enough for the polyethylene to catch the bullet. This goes for M855/green tip as well as those are the ones that pass through polyethylene plates. So, the A3 does not have the same type of ballistic characteristics as steel core armor and there is little to no fragmentation or spalling. One question I like to ask: have you ever actually read a report where someone was killed or even hurt from fragmentation from wearing a steal core plate? I haven't. Ever. Final point: "Fragmentation" is the fragments of the bullet when it strikes the plate. "Spall" or "Spalling" is part or parts of the actual plate that breaks off due to being shot. There is a difference. 👍

    John,
    I know this video was about plates, but I'm curious what your updated preference is on plate carriers. Specifically, do you think the HRT LBAC is better than the HRT RAC?
    Or perhaps there's an even better plate carrier system out there you prefer.
    I have a CRYE JPC 2.0 which is fine but I do not like the cumberbund velcro system for donning and doffing which the RAC + LBAC seem to do much better at
    Also, my CRYE JPC 2.0 has the GT2 plates in them but I am trying to find a system to make them more comfortable as my Army issued plates plus Kevlar backer made wearing plates much more padded to wear (particularly for going prone) and I am wondering if there is a system similar to that as far as current plate carriers go. Perhaps I need a better plate carrier or perhaps there is an insert I can add. The plates do fit quite tightly already though. Thanks in advance

    Can someone explain to me why these types of plates are $400+?
    Bear in mind, I can find 4" thick 10"x12" slabs of UHMWPE online right now for $240. That's the thickest I can find, and that's way thicker than UHMWPE armor plates.
    No, I'm not recommending raw UHMWPE slabs as a viable alternative. I just can't wrap my head around the price tag of high density PE plates when the material is common and widely available for much cheaper. Shaping and spall coating does not cost that much.

    I'm 63yo and have 4 bulging discs in my spine as well as worn out knees...best I can do is PE level 3A plates that weight 3lb. for both plates and pray I don't run into anything bigger than.357sig. Though at my age and in my condition I don't do much running into, out of or away from anything... 😂
