I remember it as the first "complex" record i heard, one that is as musical in terms of composition as it is danceable and was shocked with its quality. It took a very long while to find records as good as this and many years later i understood i found one of the best of its kind!
The sound of the kick is definitely artistic choice also smart choice having a thinner kick gives a lot more space for the bass and other elements in low end spectrum
